Chapter 1: Chapter One

Night - Hovering over a bustling metropolitan streetlight highlighting an outline of a business street. Banks, restaurants and the quickly passing cars created what would seem to be a mystical world, in another time some would probably think they were either in heaven or hell.

Overcome with the beauty of the scene Jessica S Legrange's vision became a little fuzzy. Quickly telling herself to refocus she started to repeat her family's mind stabilizing chant, after a few verses the world around her effectively stopping the fading world around her. Taking a deep breath, she focused on her task at hand, spotting the place where she wanted to be. Finding the picture of the building in her mind, like a rocket she zipped across the city and she found herself gliding to a stop above her best friend Stacey Marrow's apartment.

Jessica swept down to a window on the left side of the apartment and peered through the window noticing the shades hadn't been lowered, and the curtain was pushed aside giving her a clear view to the sleeping person inside. Stacey was five foot five with white-blond hair that usually was tied in a loose ponytail. Currently, the blonde strands lay around her shoulders in a messy heap while the girl herself was on her stomach. One of her hands was still holding on to a pencil and homework was strewn around her sleeping form, after a quick check Jessica noticed most of the work was all done except her magical history essay, which still had a little left before completion. Making a mental note to give her a call after she was done, she backed away from the loft and again swept herself away like the flowing wind.

Jessica still wanted to explore the left passing through the city streets wandering aimlessly until she heard voices she recognized. Like a little wisp full of curiosity she snuck to the alley's entrance. This side of town was close to the harbor and during the rainy season, it wasn't uncommon for this area to flood so the upkeep on these buildings and back alleyways wasn't maintained too consistently by the city. Which caused a huge contrast from the luxurious city to what most would call the bad side of town. Most who lived in this area although not bad people per SE but would be the low income or none magic type. Jessica felt a little uncomfortable being on this side of town, not that she disliked the people in this area but there was a clear strain between the haves and the have not in the magical world. She would have been blind not to see the clear line that had been drawn between the magical and non-magical in society but she felt too young to actually do anything to try and fix such a broken system. Trying to push her feelings aside about the area she made herself go forward where the light at the end of the alley where she heard the voices earlier. "...he had disappeared. In 1799 of the thirteen families the heir to one of the most powerful families was gone! How can the clan move forward if it doesn't have an heir? Of course, we tried to survive but the other families were merciless they pushed us out of the city and gave us the scraps of society." A voice said like a lecturer in a classroom. Realizing why the voice was so familiar I felt the need to leave but also feeling curious I decided to listen a little more. I knew the subject he was talking about when the city was established at the end of the seventeenth-century thirteen families from the central planes were the original settlers of this land. This area is rich in mana which provides the families with magical abilities so it was considered a utopia for the talented of the families. When one of the families lost their only heir and he just happens to be the only talent of his family there wasn't much use for them to take up space that could be useful to someone else. It was then agreed on they wouldn't be kicked out of the city but they would need to make space for people who needed its use. What could they do, although this was unfair was it really unreasonable? It's a rough world, it would be more unreasonable to let something go unused because this family just happen to occupy the area. I don't fully agree with their decision but I can't say it doesn't have merit either. If you consider having the extra space and the experts it has helped create who have then gone forward to create meritorious achievements some have even died saving our city from zombies and other threats its starts to become a grey area. Before I could get lost in my internal debate on this subject his voice continued. "This is why we have to open the 'bridge of Lafey'!" When I heard these words my emotions went out of control and the world around me faded away.
