Chapter 6: Chapter 5
True to my word, the rest of the team walked through the doors right after I said that.
"Remind me to make you read my fortune later," Daniel said to me. I had unnaturally good timing and could tell most of the time when something was going to happen. It made a spectacular party trick at times.
"Hey, is that the new kid?" asked Rachel, a 15-year old (all of us were fifteen) girl with blonde hair and green eyes. She was wearing khaki pants, white Adidas shoes, and a green shirt with the words "Overcome" on it.
"Yeah, he's the new kid. Plucked straight from the-" Luckily, Link knew enough to stop me from revealing the truth to him. I looked at Daniel, but he was too busy looking at the rest of the team. I couldn't blame him, to outsiders or to the simple observer, they looked like they were just a group of teens having fun. There was Rachel, of course, and there was James, a redhead with brown eyes and a bottomless stomach, Lily, a brown-haired girl with red eyes, Samantha, a purple-haired girl (she dyed it) with amber eyes, and Peter, who was a quiet kid with blue hair (he dyed his hair also) and blue eyes.
"Can we get going now? I was wondering when you'd finally tell me," Daniel said, though, for some reason, he seemed suspicious. And why did he look at Peter like that?
Daniel was about to say something when James decided to turn his mouth on. And once he does that, only he can turn it off (where's his mute button?).
"Agreed. I skipped lunch, and I'm starving!" said James. "I could eat a horse!"
"James, when you last said that, you couldn't finish a single Big Mac. What makes you think that you could eat an actual horse now?" snorted Samantha.
"But I've grown!"
"It was yesterday!"
"My point exactly."
"You're insufferable…"
"But anyway, back to reality, please." Rachel interrupted. "We'll argue about Big Macs later!" She knew how to start and shut down conversations pretty well.
They both reluctantly agreed, and so we went off to the lab. When we got there, Daniel was yet again mind-boggled, his comments ranging from "Wow," to "Holy cow, how do you do that?!"
After Daniel finished looking at everything, Link finally gave us the briefing. We were just as clueless about the briefing as Daniel was, so only Link knew what was going to happen.
"Alright, now that we've all settled down-" he looked at Daniel. "We can finally start the briefing. As most of you know, the USS Space Race is almost ready to launch. However, we need to be prepared for the launch itself, as the weight of the person counts as the weight of the ship, and we do not need another Big Mac episode, James." We all laughed at that except for Daniel (who was clueless about the Big Mac Episode), James (who was the target), Link (who was the prosecutor), and Peter (who rarely laughed, or even spoke rarely).
"But anyways," Link continued, "we have to be ready for launch in six months, otherwise they're kicking us out of the program. And trust me when I say that however annoying you are, I'd rather not lose anyone of you guys."
"So, we gotta be ready to go within six months, huh? I can do that," began Daniel (truthfully, I was prepared!), but Peter piped up for the first time. "It's harder than you think."
Daniel was surprised that he had spoken, like Peter was never there, which was actually quite common for us. He's been known to scare us whenever he says something. I couldn't blame him, as he was pulled out of a pretty traumatizing fall about six months ago that made him rarely speak now.
"O-Okay then, guys. Where do we train?"
"In the big gym." Replied Lily.
"Why do you call it that?"
"You'll see…" Rachel and I said with an evil grin.
