Chapter 2: Haunted Past

The air blew up from behind me and I could hear someone scream my name. They looked to be in a tree, very high in the tree as well. I reached out my hand to grab on to something, but I had no chance. Suddenly I couldn't breathe, and the only thing I could hear were sirens and the slight sound of a cat.

Aaron wheezed for air as she woke up in a bed with an IV bag hanging by her side. She turned around in a scare trying to get away from the machinery, causing someone to run in. Nestor ran into the room and tried to calm Aaron down.

"Aaron, stop! Calm down, we're still at the house. We're not at the hospital." Nester said as Aaron started to breathe again. "We found you in the old treehouse unconscious. Turns out you were just dehydrated."

"How did I get here?! Get this off of me!" Aaron said as she pulled the IV tube off of her arm.

"Aaron, stop! We had to carry you there was no other way! Please calm down."

"Who carried me?!"

"Ellias, just Ellias." Aaron's breathing became more steady and calmed down a bit. Aaron laid her head back down on the pillow. "Are you okay now?"

"I'm gonna take a shower, ask one of the maids to leave dinner at my door," Aaron said, walking out of the room.

"Okay."

Ellias sat in a soft leather chair and wrote on a white piece of paper. He pushed in his glasses closer to his face to look out the window to see the front yard. The grass was short and bright green like a golf course. Nestor sat on a giant fountain base with his bare feet in the water.

"No one grows up in this family," Ellias said as he fidgeted with an old toy. His phone, that sat on the table, rang. "Hello," He said to the phone up to his cheek, "How may I help you?"

"Hello, this is Doctor Cooper, I was just checking in. Did you find Miss Aaron?" Zyron's voice came through the phone.

"Yes. Please stay out of our family business from now on unless needed." Ellias hung up right before he got the chance to reply. He put his phone in his back pocket and headed towards the door. As the door opened, Ellias looked down to the corner of the door.

"Big brother Ellias, did I scare you?!" A little girl around five that looked exactly like Aaron sat in the corner of the doorway. She wore a huge smile and loose pigtails. Her small hands rested on her knees, long purple and blue bruises covering the skin.

"Haha, sure Aaron." A little Ellias spoke with big round glasses. "What happened to your hands? Did you get in trouble again?"

"Yeah, Uncle Lion said I needed to eat with etiquette. What does etiquette mean?"

"Just copy what everyone else does and you won't get hurt again," Ellias said as he patted the top of her head. "Do you know were Nestor is?"

"He's by the fountain with…"

"Guess I'm just as stuck on the past like everyone else," Ellias muttered to himself.

Nestor looked at himself in the reflection of rippling water. He could see the marble finish under the crystal clear water and the odd skeleton flower print.

"Hello, it's been a while, hasn't it? Aaron finally came home, but I don't think she's handling it well. I haven't seen her smile since mom died." Nestor said to the flowing water that filled the fountain. "Sorry, I know you're not going to reply. I guess I just need someone to talk to."

"It's alright." Nestor turned around to see Sable, talking with a smile. "I think it's hard for everyone right now. Everyone takes death a little differently."

"Yeah, I guess you're right. Then, how do you handle mom's death."

"Hmm…" Sable sat down on the fountain base next to Nestor. "I think that it's not that bad of a thing. She's not gone, she'll always be here in our hearts. She raised us well and will always be remembered."

"How do you know that?"

"Because I listened to Auntie Aquilia during her private lessons."

"Take that back! At least I didn't make my brother do my homework!"

"We're taking it there. I can take it there!" Sable scooped up some water with her hand and threw it at Nestor. His clothes were now wet in several places.

"I can't believe you did that!" Nestor stood up in the fountain and grabbed Sable's hand, pulling her into the water. She sat up and moved the wet hair out of her face.

"NESTOR!!!" Sable yelled as she pulled on his feet, making him fall with her. They continued to laugh and splash each other in the water like they were little kids.

"WHAT IS THIS?! ARE YOU GUYS LITTLE KIDS!?! DO YOU KNOW WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF WORD GETS OUT THAT MY NEPHEW AND DAUGHTER WERE HAVING A WATER FIGHT IN A FOUNTAIN?!!!!"

You could hear the yells from every room in the house. The yells of an angry man that scared everyone away from the door. Aaron held her legs on her bed, the window now locked from the outside with no escape. She opened the drawer to her bedside table and grabbed a pair of earmuffs. They quieted the sound, but the knowledge of his screams in the house still echoed through her ears.

But through her earmuffs and all of the yelling, she could still hear a tune. A humble tune of a song. Aaron opened her eyes and ran out of the door. There was no one in the hallways, yet the song was so clear it seemed she was right next to it. Aaron spun around but there was no one near her. Just the painting of her mother that hung on the wall. Aaron pulled down her earmuffs and listened to the sound of the lovely song.

In the painting, her mother was a beautiful woman. She wore her hair up in a bun held together by flowers. She looked back with her dark green eyes that could glisten were there was no light.

Have your eyes gone blind?" The voice sang.

"Have your stories gone dull?"

"If you're not afraid,"

"You're not living."

Soft footsteps came up behind Aaron but her eyes and ears kept focused on the painting. The song was melodic but stopped when the footsteps ended.

"Do you like the song? Your mother used to sing it a lot." Aaron turned around hearing the girls voice. Behind her stood a woman with light blonde hair that was gray at the roots. She had bright gold eyes and resembled the twins.

"A-auntie Fable," Aaron said, surprised at her Aunt's appearance.

"What's wrong with greeting my Niece after five years without seeing her?" Fable asked. "Why are you wearing such large and shabby clothing? This weekend I'll take you and Sable to one of our sizing and clothing stores. Do you still have that Happieobia?"

"Um, it's Haphephobia. I don't really feel like getting clothes." Aaron said, avoiding eye contact.

"Hmm, that's a shame. You're going to have to come anyway, I won't let your appearance make the city think we're shrubs. Be ready this Saturday, we'll be leaving at 11." Fable said as she walked away.

Aaron stood still even after Fable was out of sight. Her large black shirt with red sleeves fell off her shoulder. The sleeves went beyond her ungloved hands and her large pants bunched up at her feet.

"Aaron? What are you looking at?" She turned around to face Sable who had walked up behind her. Aaron's eyes traveled to her arms which were bruised her skin. Sable covered her arm with her other hand and gave a nervous smile. "A lot of things happened today, you should get to bed."

"I was looking at Mom's painting," Aaron said, avoiding eye contact. Sable looked over at the giant painting and gave a sad smile.

"That's nice. I remember her posing for this one… Anyways, you should really get to bed."

"Yeah, okay. Goodnight." Aaron walked back to her room with her head down.

"Night night Sable!" An Aaron that looked around seven yelled as she ran down the hall. Sable reached out her hand to say something but nothing came out. She just watched her ran away into the dark hallways were she'd forget how to be herself for the maids and butlers pampered her.
