Chapter 11: Bullseyes II
Artemis used the stance that John recommended for her before she aimed the hunting rifle at the traditional paper target in the range. The target was setup for about 25 meters as this was their first time at the range. The range did reach up to 250 meters for the eventual sniper practice. The hunting rifle was an older model that did not have a built-in safety. This rifle was meant for hunting game. Artemis steadied her shoulder before firing the shot. Although she was prepared for the recoil, it was quite a bit more than the Glock 45 so she did move a step back after firing the shot.
"Second gun, another perfect shot. Young Miss, try another shot. Let's see if you can keep up your streak!" John encouraged her. He still believed that Artemis was on a beginner's lucky streak. He truly did not believe that she could complete Damien's challenge. Artemis repositioned herself into the stance for a hunting rifle and quickly aimed before taking the second shot. This time, she understood the recoil and did not need to step back. Of course, she did hit another bullseye. "Wow! I am stunned Young Miss. Shall we move onto the M16?" John was starting to realize that maybe he was wrong about Artemis.
"Let me take a breather. It takes a lot of concentration to fire these weapons so accurately," Artemis set the gun down before trying to take a step away from the range. She stumbled and Damien reached forward and helped her stabilize. He asked, "Are you okay? We can come back to this later after you rest." He could see that she was slightly paler than before, and he was worried.
Artemis understood her own condition the best. To be so accurate, she needed more practice because it caused her a mental strain. She used her head to calculate wind and recoil patterns to determine the shot. It would cause any normal person a headache to think of that many numbers mentally without the help of a calculator or pen and paper. As long as she practiced, this would become second nature to her. She had to practice to control her ability over death before she was able to easily use it. She knew that this was the same. However, she wanted to truly pass Damien's challenge to earn that favor. So she decided that after a short breather, she would begin the next weapon. She wasn't sure if she could maintain the streak she had so far, but if she gave up without even trying, she would never be able to forgive herself.
