Chapter 3: Space Race, Take Two. Part 3: Who Are We?

<Resonance with another assistant. Nessa detected nearby. Touch the body on the bed to check if it hosts Nessa.>

What? Oh, right. The girls said we fell at the same time, James died with me, it's possible we translocated here. I touch the man.

<Nessa detected inside the new host. Connection in progress... Connection stopped, authorization from the other host required.>

I try to wake him up. I think the girls called him James as well, so even if it's not my James, it should still be his name. He frowns when I shake him gently. He opens his eyes, look at me, with a curious gaze, before looking around.

"This is not a medbay."

"Oh thank God, James. It's still you right?"

"Macy? Your skinsuit looks weird. And what's up with these clothes?"

"Long story short, we're not in Kansas anymore. Looks like we went to the past. Those are not skinsuits, those are actual natural human bodies. Run scans with Nessa."

"How can it be here? It shouldn't be installed so close to a shift. What do you mean the past? Oh wait, it's running the scans."

"Yeah, so. I don't know how we got here, but it seems that we took someone's body, and with how everything looks, the lack of any useful network and those bodies, that is my conclusion."

"Nessa checked the signals and found the date. All clues point to the year 1962. We went back in time. 100 years back. How is that possible?"

As we sat there, contemplating, Katherine knocked at the door and came in. The ambulance had arrived. I ask Cassie to update James on the situation before we follow Katherine and climb in the ambulance. We don't have any symptom except a couple of bruises for me and a very small bump for James, probably because of the fall. But they can't know that, and it would be weird for us to not consult any doctor after something like that since we have some kind of "memory loss". We're accompanied by Juliette since we don't know the address of "our" house. The doctors are baffled, they take a small blood sample, run a few tests, but they don't find anything. With James, however, we manage to get started on a small plan of action, scanning the various signals floating around, analyzing our situation. A doctor comes to us. He asks us our name, where we work. I say that I don't remember mine, but know my "husband"'s is James. The doctor nods to Juliette.

"Your name is Katherine. Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson. You were born on August 26, 1918." She turns to James "Your name is Lieutenant Colonel James—

"James A. Johnson. He's from the army. I work at NASA."

"You remembered?" She asks, with a hopeful look.

"I have a few recollections. Not a lot. You're my daughter, I know that, but I don't remember you. I'm sorry."

"That's okay, it should come back in a few weeks. You should stay at home this week, ma'am" the doctor says. I'm pretty sure it won't come back ever, but I nod nonetheless.

"I don't remember", says James.

"Take it easy, you've taken a small hit on the head, the memories may take a bit longer to come back for you, but they should come back as well. In any case, you seem healthy."

"Does that mean we can go home?"

"Not right now. We're waiting for your test results. If there's nothing wrong, you'll be free to go." That's fine for us, it should give us a bit of time to try and figure some stuff out. The doctor leaves the room, followed by Juliette, who must have some more questions about our "memory loss". As we make sure nobody can hear us or observe us, we talk out loud. We could talk using our assistants, but there's no need for now. It would be weird if two people just looked at each other for a long time without talking out loud in this time period anyway.
