Prologue
A young man in his mid twenties had no overall goal in life. He had experienced almost every form of entertainment the world could offer him, but nothing could truly give him the joy and excitement he craves.
School was monotone and boring for him. The world of academics stopped interesting him after he obtained his doctorates in psychology, physics, mathematics, biology, chemistry, and anatomy. The world of sports was the longest part of school that had entertained him, pushing his body to its upmost limit and breaking through that limit giving a sense of accomplishment to his being in a world usually filled with grey. In track and field, he had worked his way up to the Olympics and had become famous by breaking the world record in all sprinting events: 9.22 in the 100m, 18.7 in the 200, 42.68 in the 400m, and 1:38.44 in the 800m. The entire world was enlightened and extremely amazed at the man that was Don Krieg. The man himself, however, was never satisfied.
He had switched to all forms of thrill, switching the muscle of his body to one more inclined to strength rather than speed and, with hard work and talent, had been able to lift more than 500kg for bench press alone. Standing at a height of 6'10, he was an intimidating figure to look at. His dark and cold eyes along with his slick back hair did little to make up for it, though it did help attract many admirers from the opposite sex.
After setting a foundation for himself in strength, he had travelled the world to acquire knowledge of martial arts from the best around the globe. From the MMA to the Shaolin Temple, he had acquired, mastered, and improved every style he came across. And when he was done, he merged them together and created his own martial arts to accommodate his way of fighting. He named it the "Way of the Strong". He was 24 years old then, 4 years after he broke the 800m world record. But he still wasn't satisfied.
One night he pondered to himself and searched within himself what else there was in this life, this world, that could give him the excitement he needs? Finding no grand idea but to search the Internet, he came across anime. He watched all he could, fascinated with the adventures and action that the worlds and stories brought to him, and it gave him joy like no other. He read many novels and fan fictions as well, and wrote a few of his own. He had realized that this is what he truly craved, the world of fantasy.
So he thought long and hard of what he could do in order to bring fantasy into this world, and the only way he could think of was through virtual reality. And so he researched and studied even more about the human brain, programming, and engineering. He then toiled for several years and put all of his mind and body into what he finally created and called "The Rift".
The Rift was a headset gear similar to the NerveGear of Sword Art Online in that it covered the entire skull and the eyes. With a simple paint of black, the first prototype was bland in appearance. What it did was connect the user to the System, which would then allow the user to either interact in the worlds Don would create, watch movies and/or anime on the internet in virtual reality, and much more. It connected the nervous system and the entirety of functions of the brain other than what the body physically needs to survive, such as the unconscious breathing, pumping of blood from the heart, etc. With this, it is possible to have all five senses in the worlds the user is in and truly feel as if it was reality.
Don was now 32 and had spent a total of 8 years building the Rift, an essential rift between this world and the world of fantasy. He had no more outlook on this life and this world, nothing else could excite him or make him feel truly alive and invigorated than what simply wasn't truly real. So he would make it real.
He put the Rift on top of his head and laid down on the covers of his bed. With an iron will, he said: "Rift, OPEN."
Authorities found his electrified body the next day.
