Chapter 1: PROLOGUE

• P R O L O G U E •

"You lose."

Her shoulders slumped at those words. Mouth agape, her wide, hazel brown eyes reflected the grinning young lad lounging in a plush velvet couch across her; one leg over the other, elbows propped on his knees, chin resting on his hands. A striking shade of lush forest eyes, shining with mirthful glimmer, clashed with her unsteady ones, gauging every bit of her speechless reaction.

She gulped with difficulty. Her attention fell to her trembling hands. Closing it, she briefly glanced over the huge window overlooking the verdant canopies of enormous trees spreading out approximately two kilometers more from their elevated estate before it met the wide, blue seas far ahead. They both reminded her of the lad's eyes across her: bright and full of life, and yet, insanely dangerous if navigated impulsively.

And she just did.

"You lose," he tauntingly sing sang again, flashing her a smile resembling that of an innocent child. "Again."

Swallowing the huge lump on her throat, her gaze flickered over the white square pieces inscribed with black alphabet letters each. She clenched her jaw, hands forming into fists.

She rove her eyes around the silent room until it landed on the two young twins sitting side by side by the window, watching and listening to their conversation with a spark of light in their eyes that was way farther than their age expected. Both appeared deadly calm, but their tightly clasped hands were enough for her to know better. She almost choked a cry as she diverted her focus on the tall figure behind the twins. Their gazes met, sending each other words no articulation needed to be understood. Pursing her lips, she shot him a tight smile. He gawked at her, sheer defeat marring his pale pallor.

Before her resolve even faltered, she turned to the humming young lad, straightened her back, and firmly said with head held high, "Keep your words this time or I'll make you pay more than you can freakin' imagine."

The young lad giggled as he enthusiastically nodded his head, hands up in the air. "Of course! Of course!"

With a clap of his hands, a whirring sound resonated as the cream-colored wall on their left slowly rolled up to the ceiling, revealing a brightly lit spacious room behind.

Ignoring the few men and women in teal scrubs manning or caught up scribbling on their boards, she eyed the elevated platform with a single bed surrounded by numerous running, beeping machines and monitors. A protest vehemently clawing its way out of her chest, yelling at her a seething "No! Not again!"

She drily laughed, masking the dreadful trepidation embracing her. "Ah, I hate you passionately."

The young lad grinned. "Better luck next time." He extended his hand to the right side, pointing at the room next to them. "Now off you go, please."

With a heavy heart, she left her seat and tread the seemingly swaying floor towards it. Before she could cross the marble floor of the busy room, her shoulders tensed up at his next taunting words.

"Sweet dreams, hermana."

Meanwhile . . .

Two men stood by the seashore, facing the sea. One with tall stature, dressed in a brown sweater, and another grim-looking one with broad shoulders in black sleeves. A heavy, strained atmosphere hung around them as they stood side by side with decent distance from one another.

The sound of small waves crashing through the concrete seawalls on their farther left accentuated the cries of ravens beyond the hills, where the red roof of few manors around the island could be seen. A particular one stood out among the others─a huge mansion sitting on top of a plateau.

A cold gust of wind blew by, matching the grim atmosphere of dawn.

The first man brought his hands inside the pocket of his pants, took a sharp intake of breath, and huffed. "I still don't think that this is a good idea," he said, shaking his head. His hand shot up to fix his rimless eyeglasses that slightly slipped off his nose.

"It never was," grimly replied by the second one staring directly through the dark horizon transcending to the dark-blue sky. There was an unmistakable strain in his deep, baritone voice as the words rolled out his tongue.

A frown emerged from the first man's face as he looked at his companion. "Then why do it at all?"

From the distance, a streak of light began to emerge from the dark-blue horizon. It was supposed to symbolize hope and a new beginning, and yet . . .

Pursing his taut lips, the second man spun around at the sight and started walking away, jaw ticking and fisted hands clenching.

"Because it's necessary."
