Chapter 3: Forget this old man and go

Jackson wasn´t sure anymore if he should tell Devanta about the deal he made this morning with her father but he couldn´t let her stay at a place like this as well. While he was still pondering about what to do the old landlord already finished cooking and put some plates right before his nose.

"Young man. I can see that you have trouble telling little Devy the truth why you are here. Take your time while you eat with us." He kindly spoke and started to eat. Jackson and Devanta also started to eat. Devanta awkwardly looked at Jackson then grandpa. She didn´t know what she could talk about. Luckily Jackson started to talk.

"Old... uhm how can I call you?" He asked the old man.

Said man looked at him and just said: "Call me grandpa."

"Okay. Grandpa how did you and Devanta meet?"

"I was working at a car shop when I saw that little Devy´s mother tried to sneak into the garage. I caught her and saw that she had baby Devy hidden in her arm and she tried to find a corner to sleep for a night in that old garage. It was dangerous to sleep in between all the cars and accidents could happen so I took both of them with me to my house. My wive had a house she wanted to rent out nearby so I suggested that Devy and her mom could stay there first until her mother could gather herself and find work. She managed to find a job and worked restless all these years until she died."

With these words grandpa stopped talking and sighed heavily and looked at Devanta.

"My poor child. I wish you could have a better life. At least you should live in comfort." He stroked her head and decided to leave the two young people for themselves to talk.

When he walked out of the room the awkward silence returned. After hearing Devanta sad past Jackson didn´t know what to do. His heart hurt to hear how much she suffered. Then he remembered something.

"You see, I wasn´t sure if I should tell you this but this morning I talked with father. He agreed that you could still continue at our place if you don´t appear in front of him. What do you think? Doesn´t it sound great. You could continue go to school and stay by my side." Hearing Jackson´s words Devanta sighed.

"Sounds great but there is a condition right?"

Damn he forgot how good she knew her own father.

"Yeah there is. He wants to make you my assistant."

"Hahahaha don´t joke with me. He wants me to be your servant right? I knew it. It´s not enough to throw me out of his house. Making me your servant and once and for all degrading me... hahahaha." Devanta started to laugh maniacally. She couldn´t believe how cruel her father was.

"Trust me you won´t be degraded. You just stay by my side and be my partner. I will take care of you. I promise." Jackson tried to calm her down. He knew that Devanta laughing freakishly like this is just her way to conceal how sad she was. The more she wanted to cry the more she hid it with a smile.

"You can´t protect me. You can´t protect me of him. We both are just his pawns. He feeds us to his dogs when he doesn´t need us anymore. Just forget it. I won´t go with you. I´m happy here. Besides grandpa is already old I can´t leave him alone."

"But you would have a much better life with me. Don´t you want that after all your hardships?"

"Yeah it was comfortable in that big house but there was no one who truly loved me. On the other hand grandpa accepts me even though I have nothing. I´m happy being here."

"Forget this old man and go with him. I can take care of myself. You will have a better life there. I´m sure your mother also wants you to lead a good and comfortable life." Grandpa wanted to have a glass of water when he heard Jackson and Devanta talking. He was touched by Devy´s words but also felt bad for her to stay here. That´s why he spoke up.

"Grandpaaaaa I don´t want to leave you."

"Little Devy you can come visit me whenever you want but you really don´t have to stay here forever when you have someone who takes care of you. I can see that this young man is genuine. Go with him. If it doesn´t work you can come back to me." Devanta was touched once again of grandpa´s kindness. She didn´t want to leave but she also knew that it was the best way to finish school and have good qualifications to get a high-paid job. So she agree to go with Jackson.

Once again she packed her suitcase and walked back with Jackson. He was already waiting outside with grandpa. She hugged grandpa tightly and promised to visit him as much as she can. Jackson took her suitcase and they both walked to the main street were he had a car waiting for them. Devanta looked back at the little house where grandpa was standing and waved her good bye. It hurt to leave him again but she knew he wants the best for her and she promised to herself once again that she will pay him back in double... no for her lifetime for everything he did for her and mom.

They arrived after a short while at the Machiavelli mansion. The guard let them in and a maid already stood at the stairs to welcome them back.

"Welcome young master, welcome... miss Devanta." She struggled to address the young miss casually like this but Mr. Machiavelli ordered all servants that they should forget about Devanta´s rank and just treat her as one of her kind.

Devanta saw the troubled look on the servant and smiled ligthly.

"Just call me Devanta. Don´t be so formal."

The maid tried to take the suitcase for her but she refused. She was now nothing but a servant and she shouldn´t servants to carry her own stuff.

Together with Jackson she walked to the left wing of the residence. The left wing belongs to Jackson so he can do whatever he wants with the rooms there. He relocated Devanta´s old room right next to his room.

"Your room is here. If you need something or if you don´t like the setting just tell me."

"Okay thanks Jackson. Now that I live here I should call you young master right?" Devanta smirked.

"No need for that. Just call me like that before. We are still family."

"Pfff so you want to be my big bro? Fine. Let´s keep it like that then." She shrugged and walked into her room. She saw that a lot of her old stuff were moved here. Satisfied she put her suitcase down and unpacked it.

Mom I really hope it´s not a mistake to stay here. Please watch over me.
