Chapter 3: First Day - Syarialla

Shortly after breakfast, both Alice and Syarialla retreated back to their office to attend to the countless documents left behind by their mistress.

In her absence, they were needed to supervise and take charge over the Council matters which required their approval and signatures.

Syarialla being a former Princess, had experience tending to such work as she had worked previously alongside her father, the King of the Wolfstein Kingdom.

Being the eldest child of the Virzoeve Cathcule Royal Family, in some aspect, she was seen as the future heiress to the throne.

She had worked and trained hard to ensure she was ready to step up to the position but that all went down the drain when her younger brother, born from the Second Queen arrived.

With his birth, the nobles were spilt into two factions, one supporting the late Queen's eldest child, Princess Syarialla and the other supporting the Second Queen with her son, Prince Salvodore as the Heir to the Throne.

Long story short, with Syarialla currently where she is today, that is to say she lost the crown and went over to Raquelle.

Even though she had failed to gain the Crown which was her birthright, she had gained something far more than any Royal Throne could give.

She had gained the highly sought after position and title as a Vassalord whose authority outrank that of any King or Queen of any Kingdom, solely due to the fact of who she was serving.

With her being a former Princess, eldest child to a King and a legitimate heir to a throne, with the pride and prestige of a royal, there was only one person higher than her and above all the rest.

This very same person had offered her a chance to abandon her title and rise further unlike anyone in her family to greater heights.

When she received that offer, without hesitation, she grabbed that chance and from that day on, her life forever changed.

"Say Syar, why is the Efernfront Fields requesting to stop their water supply? Without it, won't the crops die from the lack of water?" Alice asked, flipping through the documents that was currently in her hand.

"The Efernfront Fields? Oh, that's because the farmers experienced a sudden surge of rainfall, resulting to a massive flooding of their crops. They requested to temporarily ceased the water supply from the Bancy Reservoir until the water subside and their crops repair."

"A sudden rainfall in the midst of Efernfront? If I remembered correctly, isn't the humidity quite low there?"

"Well ever since Her Imperial Majesty's return, there's been changes in the weather recently so I won't make it such a big deal over it. The closing of the water supply is only temporary."

"Is that so? It's just that I have a funny feeling about this so that's why I asked."

"Is it your sixth sense again?" Syarialla suggested, not once looking up, burying her nose in the pile of documents surrounding her.

"Maybe but since Raquelle's not here, I better don't create unnecessary trouble."

"You mean Her Imperial Majesty."

"Sorry?"

"You should address her by Her Imperial Majesty. Stop using her first name."

"But,"

"I know she's your family but let me correct you once again, Her Imperial Majesty is your adopted sister so having no blood ties to you whatsoever."

This time, Syarialla looked up, putting down her pen.

"I'm fine if you use her name in front of me but if it becomes a habit that you can't control and you start addressing her informally in front of the other subjects, it won't fare well for you. I'm just saying."

"Has anyone told you that you're vastly different in the afternoon compared to in the morning?"

The bird nest haired, low blood pressured Syar and the always so serious and strict Syar could be compared to night and day.

"Many people tell me many different things. I don't keep track of all of them. With the amount of work we have, do you think I got space in my head to think otherwise?"

"No, I don't think so."

"Remember what I said, Alice. That's your lesson for today."

Ever since Alice had entered the Palace, armed with only a few of her belongings, her only allies were Raquelle, Ishilda and Syarialla, both fellow Vassalords such as herself.

Because the title of a Vassalord was rarely given, hardly anyone knew how to be trained for such a position. Her predecessors were resting in peace and there was no proper procedures of how to go about being a Vassalord.

As such, being one of the three, receiving the authority of a Vassalord, generally the Lynevan Council had assumed the person to bear a prestigious upbringing and education.

After all, serving Her Imperial Majesty required even the lowest of rank in the Palace to possess a Hevlaska Imperial Academy Tertiary credentials.

Alice who the Council Members had deemed unworthy was deliberately ignored when she came up to them. Although they insincerely accepted her presence whenever Her Imperial Majesty was in the picture.

Not wanting to give up, Alice sought out Syarialla's advice on her conduct and appearance to improve herself so that she could gain the acknowledgement from the Council Members.

Since change could not be achieve overnight, she took a lesson each day from Syarialla as well as learning the Imperial etiquette.

It was not easy for Alice having to face a rather drastic shift in what was supposed to be a rather typical and boring life.
