Chapter 3: Chapter 3 - An Expository Passage

Elise excitedly lead the way as they walked down the long hallway, with the fine stonework along the baseboards. Various paintings were lining the walls and a long carpet was lining the floor. James and Henry were following at a distance as they watched her with amusement as she seemed to scurry along, almost like a hamster.

"So," James said in a low voice to Henry at his side, "Do you see the sparkles around her or..?"

Henry simply nodded before adding, "Aye, me and the troops aren't sure if it's faeries, magic, or some type of special power, but we can't explain it, and we don't mention it to her for fear of the fae."

James was a bit confused before remembering the folk tales of the fae and how they actually caused all sorts of mischief during the times that they were involved. and figured that he should probably follow that piece of advice due to not knowing if pixies or faeries actually existed here in this world or not yet. Brushing that aside, James decided to ask a few questions to Henry since he was still a bit lost about the entire situation.

"I guess that I'm expected to beat a Demon lord, but what all does that entail?" James asked.

"Well, mostly that involves fighting off the horrible beasties that get thrown towards humanity." replied Henry before pausing for a moment. "At least, that's what's been told to me and the lads in the knights' squadron. They don't expect us to use our heads, you see, we're mostly just swords for their use." he added with a shrug.

"I see..." said James as he crossed his arms in thought, with a hand raised to poke at his lips. It was a habit he had picked up and just couldn't shake. James thought for a few moments before returning with a new question, "But, are knights the only ones that are fighting against the demons?"

"Ah, that's a good question." replied Henry as they turned left around a corner. Elise almost skipping along, halfway down the hallway by this point. "We also have the freelancer's guild to help out the common folk."

"Freelancer's guild? What is that?" asked James.

Henry paused a moment, looking as if he tasted something sour. James was confused by the reaction until he realized that was more than likely the way that he sorted things out in his head. Sure enough, soon afterwards Henry's face relaxed and then replied, "The best way I can describe it is... err... a request hall. If people don't have a job, they can go there and get a temp job."

James nodded while an 'ah...' of understanding leaked from his lips.

Henry continued, "While most people make fun of 'em by calling 'em the Adventurers guild, I for one am grateful for it. It keeps orphans from turning into thieves you see."

"of course, my cousin actually runs the place around there, so if you ever see 'im, feel free to tell 'em that Henry says hello." He said with a smirk. "But the requests go from picking up herbs in the forest, to fixing buildings, to monster slaying. But, only two types of people go for those requests."

James frowned in confusion, "Two types?" He asked

"Aye, the strong, and the crazy" replied Henry with a wry smirk.

"What do you mean by..." James was about to continue bombarding him with questions when a shrill voice interrupted them.

"THERE YOU TWO ARE!" shouted Elise as she came from behind a corner. She had a pout on her face and was storming towards them. "Why are you walking so slow? I almost left you behind and then you'd have gotten lost." she said while crossing her arms.

James found it slightly amusing that she was obviously trying to seem scary, but it came off as intimidating as a mouse. Of course, what caught him off guard is seeing mouse ears and a tail sprout from her. Thankfully, Henry picked up on the situation and replied, "Yes, yes, we know yer excited for this, but calm yer horses. The man has only just woken up from a week of sleeping and probably isn't at 100% yet. I already told you that we needed to give him another day to recover, but you're already pushing it Little Missy."

Elise shrunk down a little when she heard that name. James noted that her ears folded down and the tail tucked between her legs as she did that.

Holding back a snicker, James cleared his throat, and said, "I'm sorry, that was my mistake. I was the one bombarding him with questions about this world. I thought that it'd be a good thing to discuss while walking, but I guess I wasn't paying enough attention to my pace."

Henry rolled his eyes, while Elise straightened her back with a beaming smile, ears and tail now missing. "It's okay" she said, "I'll tell you everything you need to know!" she then started continuing down the path as they followed, albeit at a faster pace this time.

sorry about the long wait. I needed awhile to get my thoughts together, and figured that I'd go ahead and slow it down a bit here.
