Chapter 3: Head Start

Suke laid on the bed unmoving. He on instinct leveled his breathing so it would seem as if he was still sleeping. Something was wrong and he didn't know what. He couldn't hear anything out of the ordinary but that was hardly a reason to drop his guard plus the tapping of the rain made it hard to hear anything else. He laid there for half an hour at most when he took a chance to open his eyes to look around. He saw nothing only the pale light of the moon filtering through the shades on the window. From that, he could tell there was nothing in the room. He quietly rolled off the bed and grabbed his sword that was laying on the bed next to him. He hadn't bothered to take off his equipment the night before simply because it was too much trouble to put in back on later and in an emergency, he would be ready.

He quietly made his way to the window of the room and looked out through the blinds making sure not to touch them. He saw nothing except the peaceful town and the rain falling on the window. The worst of the storm must have passed while he slept. He then made his way to the door. He put his ear to it and listened for a few minutes before he eased the door open. There was nothing strange in the empty hallway so Suke continued on heading towards the stairs.

He made his way down avoiding the creaky steps and finally making it down to the main floor. There was someone there sneaking about. Suke wondered if he should involve himself or if he should just leave the person be. He decided to head back up the stairs and was at the top when he heard the person call his name in a loud whisper.

"Suke, there you are! I've been looking everywhere for you!" The person shuffled up the stairs and Suke flinched every time he heard the stairs creak. Once the man made it up the stairs Suke realized that it was Jyn. Nothing could explain the pure misery he felt at that moment. Suke grabbed him by the shirt and dragged him into his room.

"What are you doing here!" He viciously whispered.

"I came to inform you that the strange old man got a headstart on you at going to the capital. Just thought you would want to know." Jyn said innocently.

"Never knew you could be useful," Suke said rushing out the door and down the stairs. Jyn stood for a moment processing what had happened before he burst out the door to follow. Once he got outside Suke was already on Dunhjial and running at full speed towards the city gate. Jyn could only watch as Suke traveled on in the rainy distance.

-----------------

Suke never even considered why Jyn would know that he wanted to make it to the capital before Gellion. When he arrived in the halfway point from Reddell and Kiruna soaked from the rain the thought finally occurred but wasn't important enough for Suke to think about in-depth at the moment.

Fern, the place he'd just arrived, wasn't a very big village, in fact, it only consisted of one blacksmith, an inn, and less than ten houses, but each house had very large families in it and was larger than a normal house. Suke arrived there late at night the same day he left Reddell. Thanks to Dunhjial he arrived an hour earlier than he originally would have if he used a normal mount, although to his dismay he had not run into Gellion on the road. He could only hope the old man had stopped in Fern for the night.

When he made it to the village he immediately noticed the lack of horses and could only assume that Gellion was not here. Whether the old man had taken a different road or simply did not stop here or perhaps even stopped father back and Suke simply didn't notice was unknown. He decided he would continue for the night just to get further on his way. One of the villagers passed him and briefly looked back and recognized him.

"Good to see ya again Bladestorm." He said with a thick accent. Suke smiled at the man and nodded.

"You as well Fells," Suke answered. "Any strange things about lately?"

"Nope, not that I can say. If you're looking for strange happenings then Dellum's the place you'd want." Fells said pulling his hat over his eyes to stop the rain from falling in them. "Apparently there's been a strange feller over that way. Say he's been asking about something called an Obelisk, don't know much about that though." Suke recognized the word but hoped it was a coincidence.

"Interesting… I'll have to look into that," Suke said smiling and trying to hold back his unease. "I'm afraid I have to head off soon though. Time won't wait for me and Quincey is anticipating my return, but before I do leave I must ask, have you perhaps seen on old man come through here as of today?" he asked hoping he had.

"'Fraid not." Fells said. "Didn't have any travelers today except you." He answered.

"Well, thank you anyway," Suke said. "Well thank you anyway, and be safe with the fields, I know it's been hard for you farmers lately and you'll need as much good luck as possible," Suke said and then signaled Dunhjial to start running. Fells waved his appreciation and continued on his original path. Suke's thoughts were only of what he would do if Gellion made it to Kiruna before him.
