Chapter 12: And Then We Ran.

"Oh, I have no idea who that man was" I lie, sweating profusely. I don't know what it was, but something deep inside me didn't want Jiang Li to know who Bao-Zhi was.

"People can be so shameless nowadays," says Jiang Li. "They see a pretty girl, they take the opportunity to-"

"Wait! Did you just call me pretty?" I ask, as my cheeks turn a light shade of red.

"No, of course not! I was just talking through the man's perspective," says Jiang Li very quickly.

"Oh," I said. I look down at my toes. "We should get going now!" I rush over to the fruits and veggies section and scan the display of carrots with my eyes. "All of these seem a little rotten to me," I mumble.

"I don't really care, as long as it's food princess," says Jiang Li. I roll my eyes and continue picking through the pile of carrots.

After a while, we walk over to the bakery and I buy a medium-sized chocolate fudge cake. "There, just for you," I say.

"You didn't have to buy that for me," says Jiang Li.

"Well you saved me so it's the least I can get for you," I say. I put the cake into the basket that was wrapped under Jiang Li's strong arms. "I guess we're done for the day," I say. We hurriedly walk over to the check-out counter and as I'm about to take out the food from the basket, I feel my phone buzz in my back pocket. "Give me a second," I say to Jiang Li as I take my phone out. "Hello?," I ask.

"Hey girl, where are you?" I could tell that it was Xi Fang's voice on the other end.

"I'm still grocery shopping. Almost done though." I reply.

"Well, I just wanted to warn you that my parents are coming in the afternoon to check on me to see if I'm doing okay," says Xi Fang. I immediately freeze and my heart starts to beat fast. I still haven't talked to Xi Fang's parents ever since the car accident and I knew that I wasn't ready to face them. I knew how her parents were and I wasn't prepared for all the questions and accusations that they were going to throw at me. Xi Fang's parents have always treated me fairly nicely but I wasn't that close with them. My mind still couldn't process the fact that the people who's daughter I almost killed were going to come to my house.

"Um..uh..ok, well I might be a little busy so I'll probably come late," I stutter out.

"You're going to take that long to pick up some groceries?" asks Xi Fang.

"No I have other work to do too," I say.

"What work-" says Xi Fang but it's too late because I immediately end the call and shove the phone back into my pocket. I look forward and see that Jiang Li has already checked out all the groceries. I take out my wallet and pay the lady at the cash register.

"Hey, you ok? You look a little pale," says Jiang Li worriedly.

"Oh, nope, I'm perfectly fine," I say. My mind starts to imagine all the terrible things that Xi Fang's parents would call me and accuse me of. I think of booking a hotel that night. I didn't want to go back to the house. But Xi Fang would be hurt.. and I've already hurt her enough.

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! My thoughts get pulled out of my mind by the alarm by the door. Jiang Li and I were just about to step out of the store but the alarms started beeping and blaring. The cashier hurriedly rushes over to us. "Um, ma'am we're going to need to check your bags and receipt," she says.

"What?! We didn't steal anything! I checked out every single bag and paid for them!" I shout through the ringing alarms.

"I know that ma'am, but it's the store policy to check the customers bag if the alarm up there starts beeping," says the cashier calmly.

"Are you accusing us of shoplifting?!" I fume. I desperately look at Jiang Li for support but see that his whole face is red and he is looking down at the ground. I notice that he looks very guilty. And then, I see that his hoodie pockets look fluffier than usual. I angrily step towards him and shove my hands in his pockets, taking out countless pieces of candy and bags of chips. "DID YOU STEAL THESE?!" I scream at him. I then realize why the alarm had started beeping.

"No.. they just um..magically ended up in my pocket," says Jiang Li anxiously. This was unbelievable. I wasted my money to buy so much food for a worthless shoplifter. I stare angrily at Jiang Li's face, which the red light from the alarms were reflecting off of.

"Erm, ma'am," said the cashier. My attention turns back to her. I notice that everyone inside the store was staring at me and Jiang Li and I feel even worse.

"I'm so sorry. I didn't know that he stole these. Please, let me pay for them," I say, trying to keep up a calm demeanor. Jiang Li shifts behind me.

"I'm going to need you to come to the back of the store with me ma'am", says the cashier.

"What? Why? I said I'd pay for them!" I yell.

"Please don't cause a scene," the cashier says helplessly. "I just need you two to come with me."

BAM! I scream as the cashier falls to the ground, unconscious. I stare down at her face and look back up at Jiang Li's fists. My brain finally registers the fact that Jiang Li just punched the poor old woman in the face. Shivers run down my spine as I see how neutral and calm his expression is, as if he's done this before. "D-DID YOU JUST PUNCH HER?" I shout.

"Yeah," said Jiang Li. And then, just as I'm about to scream at him again, he takes my hand and we run.
