Chapter 3: Shawn Oak

"Hmm... Let's see. How do I explain?" The professor put a hand on his chin and started musing to himself for a while.

"Do you know who and where you are?"

Ah, at least he didn't ask for my gender...

I thus answered all of his questions, which were just probing to see how aware I was. He seemed prudent. As if something bad had happened to me prior to this.

Summing it all up, I am apparently twelve years old. And the Professor said that he adopted me at an orphanage. As for why the memories are unavailable, he said that I hit my head on the way here.

What an excuse. At least be a little bit more creative... no?

He then handed me a mirror. Taking a deep breath, I mustered the courage to look at my new face.

My hair was pitch black, and my eyes shined red like rubies. Wait... Why am I so good looking? A small, defined nose along with a sharp Jawline for my age.

Now, I have Kami-Sama to thank for this. Feels great to be handsome.

As I looked into the mirror in self-admiration, Professor Oak awkwardly coughed, bringing me back to reality. I had totally forgotten he was there.

"So you're my father now?"

"So to speak. I am the world's leading Pokemon researcher, Professor Oak. People call me the Pokemon Professor! This world is inhabited by creatures called Pokemon! For some people, Pokemon are pets. Others use them for fights. Myself...I study pokémon as a profession."

He then went on to give me a massive speech about how fascinating Pokemon are, while I listened attentively. It's not every day that you meet the professor himself. (A/N: Oak thinks that he lost all knowledge of everything apart from the basics and language)

Satisfied with my interest, Oak proceeded to show me around the lab and the house. It was very big, with enough room for at least ten people to live in.

The garden was massive, with all kinds of Pokemon running and playing around.

"As you may already know, you are twelve, and once you turn seventeen you will be eligible for a trainer license."

Seventeen? I thought it was earlier? Well, I guess this would make more sense. I always found it stupid to send a ten-year-old out on an adventure.

"The reason for this is the dangers lying in the Pokemon world. Inexperienced trainers can get very injured or in the worst case die out there."

Oh wow. So this version of Pokemon is a little more realistic I see... Not that I care.

As the professor gave me a tour of the town in his car, I noticed a little Pokeball symbol in the lower-right corner of my eye.

This must be the ability tree... Alright. Let's explore the options of this so-called System.

As I focused my vision on the symbol, a semi-transparent box appeared in front of me. What surprised me was that it only needed me to think of what I wanted it to do and it would comply. ( A/N: https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/the-rising-of-the-shield-hero/images/0/06/Tate_no_Yuusha_01_04.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20190124180833 )

The abilities were separated into categories. Seeing their names, I couldn't help but marvel at how cheat-like these were.

Minimap, sensor, stats, Info, ext... There were quite a few, and when I clicked on status, a whole list of different abilities appeared. Although all of them were locked. The only one that was unlocked was health.

Clicking on it, I read the description.

[Category: Pokemon Information

Name: Health Bar

Description: Allows Host to see the health of a Pokemon in the shape of a bar hovering on top of the Pokemon's head. Also displays the percentage.

Status: Unlocked]

How nice, this is just like the games. Why is this the only one unlocked though?

[Answering Host, When the system booted up, Host received a unique lottery ticket, which allowed for a random ability to be unlocked, as well as a starter skill.]

I assume this is another gift from God... What is the skill that I have been handed?

[Listing Current Skills:

Pokemon Cooking: Allows the user to cook low-quality Pokemon food with 100% success rate. Can be leveled up through repeated usage to unlock higher levels of quality and variations in flavour.]

Nice! This will be super handy in the future, when I start my journey.

Would You like to view the map of the region?]

Oh, I had forgotten about this. Yes please, let's see what the System could gather.

As I gave it permission, the System displayed a Map overlay on top of the skills UI. It was similar to the one from the games, but if you zoomed in it was much more detailed, including known habitats for certain Pokemon amongst other useful things.

Kanto sure is huge... Way bigger than it is portrayed to be in the games.

One of the most useful pieces of information was that I was probably in a universe similar to Pokemon Origins, so more like the actual games than the anime. Mega Evolution could maybe be a thing here.

The professor, who was driving along the riverside looked at me weirdly. I coughed and went back to listening to his explanations.

After an hour of touring the town, we finally came back to the residence. There, a certain boy with orange, spiky hair was waiting impatiently in the drive-through.

So that's Green huh? Well... I don't really know what name he has in this universe. (A/N: MC is Japanese, so of course he would assume it's Green and not Blue.)

"Gramps! Took you long enough... Who's that?!" Green Carried a frown, but immediately became interested when he saw me.

"Well, This is your... step-uncle... In a way." Oak looked like he was thinking of an explanation, but Green ignored him and ran straight to me.

"Hi! My name is Green Oak, I am twelve years old and I am going to become the number one pokemon trainer on this planet! What's your name?" Green extended his hand with a smile.

"My name is Shawn... Shawn Oak. Pleased to meet you."

I don't know why, but I get a feeling that this friendship is going to be a long-lasting one.

[Would you like to estimate the probability of the Host becoming life-long friends with Green Oak?]

Oh, shut up.
