Chapter 2: Departure
Ow ow ow. What is elbowing me? Ah. I forgot Elly spent the night here.
Elly's legs were on top of me while her elbow was hitting my ribcage.
"Elly wake up. Elly, Elly. Wake up."
"Hmm. Five more minutes."
I began to shake Elly. "Elly wake up we have to go to school today! Wake up!"
My mom heard the commotion so she came to my room to check up on me. She opened the door and saw me and Elly on my bed with our PJs.
Elly was rubbing her eyes and groaning, "Not so rough Dex. As if you weren't rough all last night."
"Elly why are you saying something that can be easily misunderstood! Mom I didn't do anything to her last night! I swear I didn't touch her! C'mon Elly say something!"
"It's okay you're a healthy young boy and Elly is a beautiful young girl. As long as you two were being safe."
"Oh hi Mrs. Light! Good morning! Your son last night wouldn't stop moving at night so I had to put my legs on top of him so he would stop moving."
"Ah yes I understand my son is always so energetic. And what happened Elly? Why did you spend the night? Your parents again?"
"Yeah. They were arguing on how yesterday was the last day of my vacation until I leave and my mom was mad that my dad wasn't able to get off of work until late last night and you know how it goes. I know my dad has no choice and I know how much he loves me, but my mom felt as if he wasn't doing his best job being a father. You know how my mom exaggerates."
"Ah yes Kim is that type of person, but she means well. She just wanted you to spend your last day together as a family. I mean she won't see you until next year. I know how she feels now that my little Dexter is leaving as well. Well you two wash up and come down stairs for dinner."
"Yes Mrs. Light."
"Okay mom."
"Elly you can go ahead and shower I showered last night already"
"Okay thanks and can I borrow one of your shirts?"
"Yeah sure here you go."
In my house we had two bathrooms; One next to my room and one downstairs. My parents usually used the one downstairs because their room is downstairs.
"Hey Dex do you have a towel I can borrow?"
"Yeah here you go."
"Thanks"
"Hey Elly"
"Yeah?"
"Did you ever get homesick at school? Like were there times where you missed your parents? Your home?"
"Well yeah of course! I spent 16 years at home in a familiar place with familiar people. Then I had to go to an unfamiliar place with different people. Of course I missed home, but I also made a lot of friends. I met a lot of people and saw things I wouldn't have imagined. Of course it would've been better if I had my friends and family there from home, but you know one day we have to leave our little nest and live our own lives. You'll feel homesick at times and there will be times where you don't want to go home. Dex you're going to have a lot of fun and besides you'll have me there."
"Thanks Elly"
"There you two are. Come down and eat!"
"Hello again Mrs. Light and hello Mr. Light. Thanks for having me for breakfast."
"Of course Elly! You're family! My little Dexter when are you going to ask Elly to be your girlfriend?"
"Mom! Please we're having breakfast I don't think this is the time and place."
"I'm only joking son no need to raise your voice. Here have some pancakes."
"Son come on I didn't teach you to be so timid. Ask out Elly already or she'll get stolen by someone else. She probably gets so many guys wanting to ask her out at school. For someone your size to be so timid"
"Oh please Mr. Light there have only been a handful of guys and girls that have asked me out."
"See there Dex hurry up!"
"Dad, this is for me and Elly to discuss now please can we just eat."
"Okay okay"
"Thanks for the meal Mr. and Mrs. Light! Well I'll go ahead and wait for Dex. Bye and thank you again for the meal Mr. and Mrs. Light!"
"Oh anytime Elly. You know you're always welcomed here."
Well now it's time for the most painful part. Once Elly left the tears wouldn't stop coming down from my eyes. I'm finally leaving home for the first time in 16 years. My mom then hugged me tightly
"My little Dexter. I'm going to miss you so much. Promise me you'll be good and most important promise me you'll have fun. I don't mean locking yourself in your dorm and playing games all through the night or going to parties and hanging out with the wrong crowd."
"Mom I know and besides Elly will be there too."
"Son I knew you weren't so timid you held out on crying until Elly went ahead. You should always show her a smiling face .... My little Dex I'm going to miss you too. And I'm serious about Elly. You don't know how much you love something until it is gone. Don't forget that."
"Yeah dad I know."
I have both my parents the biggest hug I've ever given anyone. It was time to part.
"Hey Dex you're here. How was it saying good bye to your parents? I just came back from saying bye to mine and it is still as sad as the first time. No matter how much they annoying me from their arguing or their lovey dovey talk I still love them so much."
"Yeah it's the third time I've seen my dad cry. My tears also wouldn't stop going down. I was just overwhelmed."
"Yeah that's how it is at first. You realize you won't see your parents every day like you were used to."
"Yeah and Elly about what my parents were saying. You know how much I like you. I want to begin my new adventure by beginning anew with you first. I don't want you to be stolen by anyone. Will you be my girlfriend?"
My face and ears were red and I felt emotional but good thing I had no tears to cry. I was scared of Elly's response.
"Hahaha. Your face is so red Dex. Relax Dex, you know I like you too. Of course I'll be your girlfriend. On one condition."
Knowing Elly that condition was going to be something scary. "What condition?" I asked timidly.
"I only have 3 years left of school and you have 4 years. I want us to focus on school and our studies and yes on special days we can have our a lone time together. Besides there is no rush, we have the rest of our lives to be together and look forward too."
I felt so happy. Elly didn't give me an unusual request.
"We really do think a like Elly."
Without thinking I hugged Elly very tightly and gave her a kiss on her lips. It was my first kiss and Elly's too. Well we did kiss when we were younger when we saw her parents kiss, but that was so long ago and it doesn't count.
"Easy there Dex we're in public."
"Sorry I just wanted to hold you."
Both of our faces were red as a tomato.
Then there was a loud flapping noise coming from the sky.
"Sounds like the dragon is here."
"Oh dragon. Dragon? Dragon! Why is there a dragon coming? Run Elly! I'll take it down!"
"Hahaha. Relax Dex. It's the dragon tamers from school. The fourth years that are dragon tamers are tasked with picking up the students who don't live in the capital or don't have their own means of transportation."
"Ah as expected from the prestigious Griffin academy."
"There really is never a boring moment with you Dex."
"Are you two Griffin Academy students?"
"Yes we are. Come Dex."
"Huh? Is it only us two that you're picking up?"
"Yes it is. There are very few students that make it into Griffin Academy and even fewer students that aren't from rich families or from the capital. Are both of you a freshman? You're both very tall for freshmen."
"Hah. Yes I am and Elly is a second year."
"Oh Elly Hawk. You're very famous. You're known as the tall beauty. One of the four famous girls at school. Lucky me I get to escort you. My name is Luck Lay nice to meet you and what is your name Mr. tall and wow you're handsome too."
"Hah. I've never been told I was handsome before thanks Mr. Luck and my name is Dexter Light, but you can call me Dex."
"Nice to meet you Dexter Light. Well are you both ready?"
"Yeah were ready."
"Okay off we go!"
The dragon huge dragon began flapping its wings slowly and then picking up speed. The sound became louder and louder and then fwoosh we lifted off.
Wow! We were so high up. I've never flown this fast this high up. My dad would carry me when he flew up, but he wouldn't go this fast. Maybe he took it slow because he had me with him and I was only a kid? Oh well, but this is an experience. The houses looked like the toy houses I used to play with when I was a kid. It felt fresh and nice in the sky.
