Chapter 9: Chapter 8: Proving Grounds part 2

It was now dawn, the sun was slowly appearing from the horizon. The enemy camp was starting to come back to life, and the brothers were already lying in wait for the signal to launch their assault.

"Brothers, today we bring glory to The Supreme Beings, or we die trying. The fate of the tomb lies in our hands, so do not lose this battle." Doorman announced.

"Remember the plan, wait for my signal; then we will strike."

Corvus was ready, he had been waiting for this moment for what seemed to be an eternity to him. He knew what had to be done, and was ready to do so. The skeleton drew his sword in anticipation of the battle. As he waited, he let out a prayer to The Supreme Beings.

"O Supreme Ones, bless our battle so we may bring glory to Thee."

He then stood upright and prepared for the brothers' entrance.

Even for a skeleton that had only walked for a week and a half, Corvus understood the principles of war. It was simple, render the enemy useless while keeping yourself alive. He understood that he must do whatever it takes to protect the glory of Nazarick, as a Pillar.

"Brother Corvus, Brother Doorman is about to make his entrance." The 11th Pillar spoke.

The 11th Outer Pillar is a mage class combatant, dressed in red robes, he stood tall in he face of danger. He went by the name of Eagle Eye The Painter.

The brothers watched as Doorman entered the clearing alone. He faced the exiting enemy forces, and simply waited for them. He stood tall with his sword and shield equipped, ready to execute his mission.

He drew his sword and pointed it to the enemy encampment, but this was not a simple show of power.

"ACID ARROW!"

3 arrows flew out of his sword, piercing through the unaware front guards.

THUMP THUMP THUMP

"SHIT! THE FRONT GUARDS ARE DEAD!"

A large commotion was triggered by this attack, the whole encampment was alerted to Doorman's presence. The whole of the enemy force gathered at the front of the camp, facing the skeleton. Doorman fearlessly faced his enemy and started to slowly walk towards them.

"It's just a single undead, surround it and destroy it!" The commander shouted.

"Yes, sir!"

The enemy forces started to surrounded Doorman, quickly encircling him, but keeping their distance from him.

"Cowards."

"Martial art: Awareness!"

Doorman went into a defensive stance, keeping his enemies away from him. If there was a good time to let out the signal, it would be now.

BOOM

the brothers jumped from the trees, from all directions, there was a brother quickly approaching. The sky was seemingly filled with the impending doom of the humans, death was coming from above.

"FOR NAZARICK!"

The encircling enemy forces were quickly surrounded by the force of 12 skeletons. The smaller force of undead stared down at their enemies with menacing auras.

Corvus was at his position, already having picked a suitable target; a very suspicious knight.

"IN THE NAME OF NAZARICK, DESTROY THEM!" Doorman commanded.

Corvus sprinted with all of his mobility and entered combat against the suspicious soldier. Corvus began his attack, with a newly attained martial art.

"Martial art: Indefinite Blade."

Corvus swung his blade to his left, but was parried by the knight.

SLASH

A large gash appeared on the Knight's chest, making him bleed profusely.

"WHAT THE FUCK!?!" The knight shouted in pain.

"Misdirection."

The skeleton appeared from behind the knight, quickly driving his blade into the latter.

"AAAGH!"

A few of the surrounding soldiers stopped engaging the other skeletons and turned their attention to Corvus.

"PROTECT THE 9TH SEAT!"

Corvus' suspicions were correct, this knight was not who he appeared to be. This man was not one of the standard soldiers.

STAB

The skeleton pushed his blade through the heart of his opponent, instantly killing him.

The soldiers ran towards him, all with fury in their eyes. They charged at him, attempting to overwhelm the skeleton.

"Executioner Art: Execution Matrix."

Suddenly, a wave of blood and gore exploded from the scene, rendering the area into a cloud of red mist. The cloud slowly dissipated, leaving only Corvus standing.

The rest of the surrounding soldiers avoided him, preferring to fight against the other brothers. Corvus decided to render assistance to Doorman, who was fighting the enemy leader.

"MARTIAL ART: WORLD SLAM!"

Doorman was pummeled to the ground. The enemy commander prepared what seemed to be a legendary war hammer, readying a powerful overhead slam. The man looked at the prone skeleton with fury in his eyes, the expression of a hyena stalking its prey.

Doorman faced his opponent from the ground, wielding his shield to block the attack. But a simple shield cannot block such a powerful hammer.

"Foolish undead!"

SLAM

The skeleton was mercilessly crushed under the heavy swing of the hammer. Doorman laid on the ground with his rib cage shattered. The second most powerful being in the Reserve Tomb was defeated.

"Trash."

Doorman slumped on the dirt, slowly moving his hand to his sword. He looked to the bewildered Corvus, and nodded his head.

Corvus watched the scene. He watched as his most dear brother, and teacher, was crushed into submission. He watched as his teacher and only guide, was defeated. Corvus only felt what he had always felt towards the living: hatred. he felt unparalleled shame, for his teacher was defeated to such an extent on his watch.

"HOW DARE YOU, MORTAL!"

A mist of red appeared from the skeleton, his rage turned into power, and his powered turned into determination. His bones turned to crimson, and his armor turned to black.

"What in the world are you!?" The commander said.

"Something that human scum can not comprehend."

His sword glowed a deep orange, almost as if it was melting. Or perhaps it was.

"Only a puny level 30 skeleton, pathetic."

"What did you just say, swine?"

Suddenly a ring of red orbs surrounded the skeleton, it was quite obvious what was happening, but maybe not to an outsider...

"Magic? Is that supposed to scare me?!" The commander shouted.

"What magic? These are your brothers." The skeleton sighed.

The orbs flew into the skeleton, giving off a powerful red aura. The light was still strong even through a minute of life. A simple metamorphosis wasn't what had happened, a profound change had erupted in Corvus. Corvus started to appreciate the humans, for every human that fell, a Brother was born.

"Brother Doorman, watch as this lower life-form falls to my blade."

"Thank you, Brother..." Doorman finally slumped on the ground, lifeless.
