Chapter 24: Understanding

Our forces were reorganized to defend the last wall. If they get through this wall the dungeon door is next.

The door is on a side of the hill and not on top of it. On top we made a fortress. If they don't enter through the side closer to the door we can use the fortress but if they discover it beforehand and go directly to it then the fortress will not be of much use.

This time I will remain in the fortress and move where the heroes attack will be. I will use magic to attack the humans from the fortress while waiting for my turn. The same as Last time some demons will be left behind as reserves.

We got ready quite fast since the humans didn't stop their advance. The humans walk all their way here. They surrounded the wall and remained there. As it was quite late it soon becomes evident that their offensive would resume tomorrow.

Now we are much closer than before. Previously the dungeon and the fortress were the furthest away from them but now it is not so far way. They can now easily grasp my general position so going to the dungeon would be unwise.

From the battle I got some energy to summon new demons. Those will have to come out of the dungeon but I doubt they would give away the dungeon's door position. There are too many demons around and all have more or less the same energy so it is improbable they would so accurately grasp the position of those demons and know for sure there's a door in there. I'm on the other hand much more powerful and easy to detect. My advisor told me there are ways to hide one's power but I haven't been able to control it properly furthermore it is convenient to have all their attention to me.

My spy demons as well as some others whose special trait is stealth do know how to properly hide their energy. There are actually a lot of demons with such capability. I haven't used it much aside from my spies and even then they have only gather information but their true strength isn't information gathering. They are all killers and destroyers.

Tonight they would serve their true purpose. We will no longer wait for them to move. This time we are taking they fight on them once again.

Aside from arranging my army on the hill I have been moving my demons outside to move. They will target the supply lines which are the main weakness of the human army. If we can survive long enough in these walls, they would lose their strength gradually.

I wonder how the human world would react if this expedition fails. Would they put all their rivalries aside for good and come with a bigger army? I would really much like to break their frail coalition apart. Unfortunately I don't think I know how to do that. I don't know well enough the situation.

On top of the tallest tower of the fortress I give one last look at the human army surrounding us and close my eyes afterwards.

In my mind the vision of several of my demons outside appear sequentially. Looking through many of them, who are on different places, I get a general overview of the next battlefield. Unlike the majority of the land around the place where the supply line goes through is a dirt road make by the continuous groups who cross it. Much of the area around their path has been levelled so my demons are hiding some distance away from them but that is insignificant for such fast creatures.

The sun is setting. Along the supply caravan more and more lights are appearing. The demand for supply is that huge that they don't even stop for the night or if they do it is for a short while so they either do so late at night or get up before dawn.

This caravan is not but one of many. If this goes well I am thinking of sending them to destroy as many as they can tonight.

We are beginning with a caravan close to the human army making the siege. We will move along their path to the border but not too close since armies are also deployed along the borders of this wasteland and especially in the place where all the supplies are gathered to be sent here at the siege.

When the sun sets and darkness fills the wastelands my demons move in it closing more and more to the unknowing caravan.

Soon the place once filled but with the sounds of the moving caravan now is disturbed by the screams of its members. One after another the lights along the caravan die out. The hardener soil by thousands of wheels and steps is now wet by blood.

Soon all light disappear and silence fills the place once more. But it doesn't last long. All is gathered in one place and burn. Humans, horses, carts and supplies burn all at the same place brightening up the night. My demons though don't stay to see it but instead run to the next victim.

They ambushed and destroyed as many caravans as they could. They stopped before dawn since they were too close to the border. Now they move to the next target. There isn't only one supply line but this one was the largest one.

Along the way they deal with guarding positions to avoid a report of the attack was made to soon. One of those was quite large but with the help of the night they were deal without problems.

The human army surrounding us didn't seem to notice much across the night. It wasn't until dawn that some started to worry about the delay on the supplies caravans. Thanks to the fastest way of communicating with magic of this world in relation with their apparent technological advancement a report of the situation arrived early in the morning. The attack that should have started early in the morning got delayed.

All around the human army chaos is spreading but in one place on particular a heated discussion is taking place.

"We must attack now! We got them cornered already so much with great efforts. How can we just let them there and not finish them off instead!"

"Heroine Lena I don't see why their situation should change. They are cornered now and so they would remain. I don't plan on leaving this place. We will just send some soldiers to supervise the situation. The rest shall just stay on standby since we don't have any guarantee of our victory today and without supplies we would just waste our forces and the moral would crumble."

"Even so this is what they want! We don't know what can be waiting for us tomorrow. Ulrich told us that the number of demons seems to have increased on two occasions since we arrived. If we don't defeat then now we may face a larger force! Maybe the doors will open and all will end!"

"Heroine Lena we are here to eradicate this evil which has destroyed many lives and lands. We are not here for some fairy tales!"

"With all due respect generals we are here because those fairy tales as you call them have proven real. Surely no one has ever see if three doors exist or not but we have seen never before seen demons appear out of nowhere and bring such a huge devastation. Ignoring this threat is not wise."

"Sending our soldiers there will solve nothing. Can you guarantee we will win today? If we don't win by sun set our moral will crumble and our army will no longer be able to fight in earnest. A counter attack by those demons at such a time can become disastrous. They don't seem to tire at all and if new demons really can appear then all the more dangerous the situation would become. The safest way is to just defend for today. We will restore the supply line between today so tomorrow we can resume the attack."

"I agree with General Alfred opinion we should just keep the siege."

"So do we"

...

Soon all the generals agreed not to attack today. The heroes got out of the meeting without saying any other word.
