Chapter 3: Secrets

Secrets are something that we conceal, not wanting anyone to know. Something that we keep inside our hearts and probably would haunt us until the moment we die. Though, it depends on what kind of secret it is. In my case, my whole presence is secret. Nobody shall know that I'm right here, still breathing, and trying to get my revenge.

I steal a glance over my phone and getting inside my blanket again. It's raining again outside, and it is Thursday. I deserve sleep more than any other day. It's my free day because tomorrow, I need to see my former police supervisor as he told me he wants to see how my life has been after getting released from prison. It is suspicious, no doubt.

He's not a really close acquaintance of mine and he could have called me anytime but now. Where was he the past months? I hope that he doesn't bring me any bad or potentially bad news. Though whatever it is, his call was already a bad omen from the beginning. I've been keeping my presence such a secret and yet he still can get me.

After being released, I've been staying low and even declared myself 'migrated' to the other part of the world and even though that was such a hassle, it's worth it. I've remained undiscovered until I received his call last night.

Trying not to think too much, the sound of my doorbell suddenly broke into this dark, unpleasantly filthy room. The sound followed by a slow knocking on the door. I wonder who would come over this early. Been a long time since someone rang and knocked on my door as I, obviously, don't expect and welcome any guest at all.

I walked closer to the door and take a peek. After getting the image clear, I open the door slowly and small enough for him to get in, "What are you doing here?".

He walked past me and trying to find space to sit. "What's with this mess?"

I ignored his question with another question, "Aren't you scared coming here? I mean, your job is at stake isn't it? You told me you are so close to getting promoted".

He sighed and looked all serious.

I motioned him to say whatever he is trying to imply. All my life, I've learned that once you've been through the worst, whatever may come next doesn't matter because it won't get any worse.

"You should stop, Ryo. Whatever you're doing or planning, stop it. They know. They will find out in no time and you are not even on the start line!"

He raised his voice at the last sentence and trying to calm himself down. Luckily, I am smart enough to put my room all soundproof, so this kind of scene won't raise any problem. "What do you mean they know?"

"I was called to come to the headquarter for my promotion and saw someone from the CH Corporation was there, making a report. Unfortunately, I couldn't find out what he reported or even who he is."

Weird.

Something went wrong but, I can't tell what it is. Nor do I know if it's connected to the call last night. After leaving Chinen alone yesterday, I expected that he would go to the police or something, but this happens too fast and if he really did report me. Damn.

"Ryo, are you even listening?!"

I stood up and get closer to him. "It's okay, Dai. Everything will be alright. Thanks for the heads up."

"I didn't come risking my promotion here just to receive your thanks you know. Tell me what you are planning and how I can help?"

No, as much as I trust Daiki, it's still too risky to let him in. He is not ready for this and I won't let things get messier than it is. "I didn't know what you're talking about but I'm not planning anything. What's the connection between me and CH Corp anyway?"

As I gave him a wry smile, I realized something.

What's the connection between me and CH Corp?

Exactly, that's the question. Why he is coming over just to let me know that somebody from CH was making a report and how did he know whether that person really was reporting something or not? No, to begin with, how did he even identify the mysterious person as someone from CH? Daiki was all along just a normal police officer with not much connection.

I get a really bad feeling about it, but I don't want to let my judgment astray.

Deep inside, I want to believe that what I'm doubting right now is entirely impossible. He is someone as close as a real brother to me. We were best friends for years and the fact that he believed me while others don't, it really means a lot to me. I've been betrayed a lot before, and I know I should not let my guard down but it's Daiki that we're talking about here.

Upon hearing my question, his face turned blue and he acted awkwardly. "Anyway, do let me know if you need any help okay? I can't stay as long as you know."

I nodded and walked him out and left him another question before he finally left without answering it, "Thanks, Dai. Really. I can count on you right?".

Okay.

Now that I'm back alone in my room, I should really get things done. Whatever happening with Daiki and CH Corp guy, I'll leave it as it is. Right now, I have to find ways to get to Chinen again and win him over this time.

Skimming through my room and finally found the box full of documents stashed together that I've just gotten recently. These papers almost cost my life and it's quite unbelievable that I managed to get it. Reading from one to another until day turns into the night is really not an easy task.

Thankfully I've been trained to do so for the sake of my job and this skill comes really handy. I don't get tired or hungry at all. People have been saying that I'm a robot because they never see me stop working especially when I'm on a case. They also mentioned that my clients would all be lucky as I will go all out for truths to be untold.

Based on my experiences, now I can say that's more of a nightmare than a blessing. Never have I ever imagined that I would fall into deep trouble just because of my sense of justice. Hah.

Gosh, I should stop reminiscing, really. It's in the past and I should let go but no, I would never. I can't stay put knowing that something is wrong, and it is dangerous as it will turn into everything is wrong, soon enough. For everyone's sake, I must rush. The time that I have would become less and even lesser. Not to mention, I have no team as of now. Sigh.

Thinking back about it again, I reckon that I have to plan things out about Chinen asap. Before I left him knocked out, I've gone through his phone and nothing seems suspicious. Of course, I don't believe that. I bet he must be hiding stuff quite professionally and I needed more time to dig it deeper which I didn't have. Now that he has met me, it's a bit dangerous to come and get him. Despite him not knowing my face and only voice, I still need to alter my plan and ensuring my identity remains hidden from him. Guess I need another party involved in this.

Yes, that's the plan.

I'd get him, himself, come to me without me approaching him at all and play as if it is fated for him to work with me. As he believes in destiny, I'll give him that, as bait. Now the next step is to figure out how.

Guess it's time to flip the card.
