Chapter 26: Chapter 24: Escalation
The city immediately fell to chaos after the loyalist faction of the military failed to put the coup under control. The loyalist side and the opposition clashed in the center of the city several kilometers away from Enrique's position. Who is on his way to meet his friend, the General in the military who supported him and lead the coup. Cobra on the other hand in the shadows operated in Enrique's steed, coordinating their faction's movements in trying to screen the opposing faction.
With the sights of the Organization against them, Cobra is having a hard time after some of their agents are being killed one by one by assassins. El-Rashid who was careless was also killed in the process. Now, it is up to him, Enrique and some of their allies to continue the fight.
Over the city, rebel aircraft bomb vital pro-government positions claiming lives in both military and civilian alike. The whole city is placed under red alert after the start of the fighting. Pro-government military assets were deployed and are now on course to meet the rebels in the center of the city.
On his way to their headquarters, Luis turned on the radio for the updates. He was troubled with what he heard for the thing he feared did really happen. The broadcaster began speaking in the radio and said.
"We currently interrupt your program to deliver these important news. As of 1400 hours, Rebel forces are now moving in to the city center, capturing vital and strategic positions. They intend to march into the Presidential Palace to oust the current administration. The city is now placed on high alert, civilians are asked to stay in their homes for safety reasons..."
Luis turned his radio off and looks at the sky above the city. Several rebel aircraft are strafing towards government forces in the area. They caught the loyalist forces in surprise who were unable to prepare anti-air defenses in the city. Columns of smoke can be seen as a result of the airstrikes.
Meanwhile inside the Presidential Palace, the president observers the situation from the window of his office. He wishes to throw tantrums to express his anger towards the situation but realizes it is meaningless at this point. A military official arrives to inform the president that his Chopper is ready. The president however refused to evacuate and instead sat on his chair.
"It's meaningless now..." Said the president. "I prefer to sit here and watch as events unfold."
"Is there anyone else out there we could ask for help?" The president asked.
"The Western Atlantic Fleet of the Atlantican Federation is near sir, we can ask assistance from them. Also, a helicopter carrier from the Kingdom of Yamato is ready at a moment's notice. Their Emperor and the Parliament who expresses their concern about the situation also is willing to extend help..." The presidential adviser said to the president who interrupted him.
"I want to call the president of the Atlantican Federation!" The president stands up and decided.
The city is thrown into chaos as civilians scrambled to get to cover from the explosions caused by the conflict. Many fled to the subway to seek cover while others went away from the fighting as they could. The rebel forces are now gaining ground towards the perimeter of the Presidential Palace. Help from the Atlantican Federation is still hours away and the final defenses of the Government forces hopes to delay of the coup done by the Rebel faction in the military.
Several blocks away from the place where Jose was working, he was dragged by the two thugs who were dressed as policemen. The two stopped when they saw a police car who happened to pass by. The policemen seeing them stopped and disembarked from their car to check them out. One of the thugs signaled his companion to leave Jose behind thinking that the policemen may be after them and ran as fast as they can.
"Are you alright young man?" One of the policemen asked him.
"Yes, those men planned to abduct me." Jose said and realized of a flash drive in his right hand.
It was from that man before. Jose realized that he has been carrying the item from el-Rashid who disguised himself as a hotel staff of the Heian Hotels. He shows the flash drive to the police and hands it over to them with his hands shaking.
"It's alright young man, we should take you to the station. You are not safe here." A policewoman said and took him to their patrol car.
Thirty minutes after the initial destruction done by the rebel forces in the city. The government forces from nearby loyalist camps had arrived to reinforce the pro-government forces in the area. Despite having a numerical advantage on the ground, the Rebels enjoy air dominance. They were supported from a nearby airbase in Ford Lewis Airbase several miles away. The once peaceful capital city of the country has now been turned into a war zone.
Hearing of the recent developments in the city, the President felt a little feeling of relief. "I think that should hold them for a while." He said and sits on his chair.
"Mr. President, about the Atlantican help. It is better if we turn to our nearby allies as well. The Kingdom of Yamato could send some aid and..." The presidential adviser recommended him but was interrupted by the president who said.
"The Atlanticans are enough in dealing with this mess. With my boys in the ground, I swear, they will delay the enemy until cavalry arrives. For the mean time, let us just hope and pray. After all luck is always at my side!" The president said confidently in his chair.
