Chapter 3: THE MASK

THE ROYAL CAPITAL GENEVA
She walked on the oft trodden pathways, basking in the light of the sun so often missed in the darkness of Tartarus. The clanking of her chains, missed in the noise of everyday life that surrounded their small group of prisoner and guards, as she was led to the beginning of her end, the start of her new life. In the distance she could see the tower that seemed to touch the heavens, the centre of power, where the the emperor ruled with his wise council.
Her dull eyes flashed with hatred, a momentary spark that disappeared as though a mirage. She turned away and continued on.
Geneva had been preserved like the old world, from a thousand years in the past. A relic from a long time ago. No public teleportation pads or aeropods were allowed in this museum of a city, but it also hid the base of the transmigration program. She was escorted to a small shop and once through the doors they were immediately teleported to a camouflaged lab floating in the sky; one of many. The moment she landed the guards stood back and teleported away and she was left standing alone, tied, tired and dirty.
Suddenly she heard a robotic voice coming from a module on the wall,
"Prisoner 616, confirm your identity by placing your finger on the pin pad."
She silently did as told as the pin pricked her skin to ID her DNA. She stepped back and waited for further instructions.
" You are commanded to wear the mask provided to your right, as are all prisoners. After locking your mask in place, your chains will be removed and you will be instructed on your first mission." sounded the monotonous voice. She saw that a mask had been placed nearby, a mask which would turn into a collar when she removed it. It would be her tracking and controlling device. A sense of humiliation washed through her body as she was forced to turn into a nameless, faceless criminal slave of the empire. She would change it, her rotten fate. Let this mask be her reminder, the voice that would never let her forget of the debts that were owed. She looked into the mirrored glass walls all around, at her beautiful wine red hair which he used to brush through every night as though precious golden threads. She looked into those emerald green eyes, reminiscent of gemstones he gifted and those rose red lips which he worshipped every day together. As she lifted the mask to place it, a single tear slowly dripped down her cheek and disappeared as though never there.
"I am ready. Please process my first mission."
"Relax your muscles as the system will insert the A.I chip, the type randomised, into your spinal cord. This chip will integrate with your soul energy signature and will follow your soul as it is sent to different worlds. Failure to save a world will result in immediate termination of your soul. Proceed with caution." intoned the voice.
All of a sudden she felt severe pain wrenching through her body, like lightning was striking through her very bones. Even with her strength of will, she started screaming and screaming as all she could feel was the agony as her soul was flayed with the integration of the A.I.
After what seemed a very long time, the pain receeded and she ended up curled on the floor, as her whole body convulsed. Then a cheery voice sounded in her head,
" Good Morning 616! I am the system randomly selected to be your partner and support you through your journey to save the Universe! You may name me as per your wish. I have been fixed at Level 1 Authorization. Please work harder to increase your authority!."
" Just call yourself whatever. Call me Xixi and not my number. Also tone down the cheery tone. Let us not waste time. Initialize the first world hop."
" Yes Xixi. All details will be available only on arrival but it is ensured that the world was created by a human author several centuries ago during the old regime. Opening wormhole in .. 3…2…1. Initializing soul extraction and transport."
