Chapter 4: Friend...?
Arriving at school, me and Kaitou separated ways. I went to my room where all my classmates are causing a ruckus. We're the nosiest section in our grade and I really hate it. Being the edgy person that I am, I wore a mask to cover my face.
I went to the second to the back seat, which was my position and quietly sat there. The main reason why our classroom is the noisiest is because the goddamn student council's president, Subaru Monte, sits behind me. He's very popular due to his 'handsome looks' and kindness.
The person sitting next to him is our class representative, Nica Calanasan. She's the most hated person in our room. The President was the only person who stood up to her when she was being bullied. She sits behind him making more people hate her. Her being the Class Representative was supposed to be a joke so when she messes up they can make fun of her.
I don't like sticking my nose into other's business so I only keep quiet even if I see them bully her. I'm treated as a ghost in the classroom. I don't really matter to them. Gone or not they wouldn't give a fuck about it.
Our homeroom teacher entered the room making everyone else sit down on their seats and be quiet. He started doing the roll call.
"Ryu Alcantara?"
"Present," He replied.
"Irene Amano? Is she okay now?"
"Present."
"Well, Miss Amano you need to pass the excuse letter with your medical records to make your absence excused."
"Yes.."
"Alright, next... Asnaifah Ambulla?"
"Present."
When the roll call finished. He started discussing our lesson. The lessons went smoothly, but honestly I was just day dreaming the whole time so I don't know anything.
Finally, the loud bell rang indicating that our classes end and its break time. Almost everyone formed groups and left the classroom noisily. I took a packed sandwich that Kaitou made for me this morning, and went to the cafeteria. I headed to the back of our cafeteria where there are barely any students. I sat on an empty bench in front of the vending machines. Silently eating my sandwich, our class representative stood in front of me.
"H-Hi Irene, is it okay if I sit beside you?" She asked.
I simply nodded back and move a little. "T-Thanks." She said.
We both eat quietly, having a tense atmosphere. She started to speak to lighten it.
"Erm, Can I ask why do you always eat alone? Also you're very beautiful but you cover your face with a mask? "
"I'm just simply not interested associating with those kinds of people where looks and popularity only matters to them," I calmly replied.
"Is that so...?" She mumbles.
"Why are you sitting beside me?" I asked.
"Well, no one would let me sit on their tables and it's lonely to eat alone." She answered.
"Sit beside me then," I suggested.
"What?" She asked.
"I don't see what's wrong with it so I'm letting you, besides you're doing it right now." I said.
She somewhat have teary-eye but she smiled, "Thank you so much!"
I simply nodded back and smiled.
Her phone rang, and she looked at it. "Oh, I have to leave. The council needs me. Goodbye!" She bows politely and ran.
I waved at her as she ran and kept on eating quietly. After finishing, I stood up and threw my trash
then went to the vending machine in front of me. I wanted to get coke but I realized that I have no coins left. I stared at the machine, thinking of a way to get one. While being immersed on thinking of a plan, I heard a click that caught my attention.
It was Subaru the student council president. He was smiling while holding a camera. "Uhm, are you taking a picture of something?" I politely asked.
"Yes, I was taking a picture of you." He replied back.
"What for?" I asked.
"You just looked beautiful, you know? So I thought I'd seize the chance of taking a picture of a beautiful girl. "
"Are you flirting with me?" I asked. He stared at me for a few seconds and burst out laughing.
"What's so funny?" I asked, crossing my arms in front of my chest.
"I guess you got me. Yeah, I was kind of flirting with you, and I thought that you're pretty interesting but I wish you don't mind that I took pictures of you." He laughed a bit.
"I don't mind it really, but interesting?"
"Well you see, girls would be happy if I did that to them. They always give the same reaction, so I was surprised to see yours." He wiped the tears from his eyes.
Pissed off, I only kept quiet with a straight face. When he finally calmed down he requested a favour, "Can you smile for me?"
Startled, I asked."Why should I?"
"I just think that you'll have a beautiful smile." He gently smiled.
"Don't even try me," I rejected his offer as I stared at the vending machine.
He chuckled and inserted a coin and pressed the button of the drink I've been staring at.
"You want this right?" He gave me the drink and walked away.
"Weird..." I pointed out.
Looking at the time, I decided to go back to our classroom and sit quietly on my seat.
After a few more minutes, the school bell rang making all students rushed and returned back to their seats.
The door opened, and it was none other than my brother, Kaitou, who entered. He went to the table and placed down his book.
"Good morning students, I'll be your substitute teacher to replace Mr. Kashino. I'm Kaitou Amano." He introduced himself with a big smile.
Subaru stood up and asked, "Amano? Are you related with Irene? "
He smiled brightly and replied, "Yes we are, but even if we're relatives. I'll treat all of you fairly. "
Subaru smiled back and sat down.
"Now that you guys know me, I still don't know your names but I'm fully aware on how you all hate introducing yourselves so I'll just ask your name when you'll answer a question. Alright today's lesson will be easy! Factoring trinomials. "
Well since the subject is Math, everyone became really silent.
"Here's the formula to factor it."
(a+b) (a²+2ab+b²)
(a-b) (a²-2ab-b²)
I took down whatever was written on the board, but didn't listen. Time went fast, without listening to a single thing.
I daydreamed until it was lunch. The annoying bell rang once again. I took out my lunchbox and started to eat.
Everyone started to leave the room and head to the cafeteria. While Nica and Subaru left for the council. I was left alone in the classroom.
"Irene~" A familiar voice echoed through the room.
"Kaitou?" I asked. "What's wrong?"
"I left my own lunch, when I prepared yours." He cried.
"Idiot, here I'll share some of mine." I said and handed him mine.
"Thank you." He took a bite of the extra sandwich he packed. "I'll get going now."
I finally finished eating after a while, and took out a manga. It was titled Breathe, a story about one-sided love about two girls.
I was reading the manga intensely, until I felt a tap on my shoulder.
"You like mangas, huh?" Subaru said as he peeked on the manga I'm reading.
"What do you want?" I asked with annoyance.
"Find out more things about you." He smirked.
"Go flirt with your fan girls."
"Hmph, you're no fun." He said looking disappointed.
He left the classroom taking a book with him. I continued to silently read the manga.
Time went pretty quick once again, it's already dismissal; my favourite part of the day.
Since school has finished, I went to the nearest bookstore to buy a new notebook and a couple of extra pens and pencil. Falling in line on the cashier, I waited until it's my turn.
"Is that all, ma'am?" The cashier asked.
"Yes," I said as I handed out the amount needed.
After buying everything I needed, I returned home and went to my room.
Rather than wasting the time given to me, I've decided to make it somewhat useful and record everything that will happen to me from now on.
