Chapter 2: Back at the old school

In the middle of my summer vacation, my parents gave me the choice to choose the stream that I want to pursue and the place where I want to take it, but the place was to be either my hometown or the residential school I graduated my tenth standard from. The choice, like most Indian parents give, had a lot of conditions. So, instead of choosing it then, I went with both mathematics and sciences to get myself two more years to choose a profession. I chose my hometown cause I thought it would be better to be close to home before I go somewhere far away for college. I saw a few of my old friends when I visited my old school to apply and but I didn't expect any of them to greet me or even remember me. The ones that actually made an effort to talk to me were not even that close to me in the past but I don't think any of my old friends even noticed me. I couldn't even recognize a lot of them since they changed a lot, after all, it's been more than two years since I left without any word.

It was mid afternoon by the time I was done with all the formalities of my admission there. The school had a kind of nostalgic feel to it and it felt just right to be here again. I walked around for a while, trying to notice all the changes that have been made here. One of the old buildings was torn down but there was a new one built instead. The places of the sand park and the science park were changed too. Running around, playing tag and causing all kinds of troubles for the teachers in the break time, the times we spent goofing around in the canteen and all those serious but really silly football matches we had in the sports time, remembering all of them made me smile a bit. I felt silly but I didn't mind it much because there was no one around. The supposed to be swimming pool that turned into a fish pond was still filled with a lot of algae as it always is. The three story library beside it was still half closed for the students, the reason being half empty. The A-block or the art block now housed all our science labs, math lab and the computer lab along with the dance and music rooms and the art and craft rooms. All of the three blocks were connected by a marble path along with a ramp from the first floor and the assembly area being the center of it all. The school itself was one of the best ones in my hometown but I still don't love it. The only reason for coming back was for my studies and the people. I went back home with my admission form and boldly reported about my decision to my parents. They got angry for me acting on my own but they took the news fairly good enough for me to live to see another day. For the next 2 months, I was free to goof around and have some fun but technically it's just some 'me' time. Since I hadn't been in touch with any of my friends from here, I didn't really have anyone to spend time with and I was too young to go for a drive or go out on my own, so I spent most of my free time at home, binding me to some sick way of living in loneliness at home, stuck to the Television watching the same stuff over and over again but after these horrible couple of months I had, it was time for school again.

I woke up early on that day, not because I couldn't sleep but because I was a little bit nervous about meeting all the people I actually knew at some point in my life. Getting ready was easy since I had my uniform and shoes prepared the day before. My grandmother, showed off her skills at getting kids ready that was evident of her experience. My breakfast was waiting for me as soon as I came out of the bath and so are my shoes and the rest of the things I needed in place. Hopping into the car for the 20 minute ride to the school, I just started to imagine all the ways this day could go, how good or how devastating it could basing on the way I act. I was half asleep by the time I reached the school, gazing at the slow traffic, with not even a bit of fascinating events tends to make me drowsy. I was a couple minutes early but I still made my way to my classroom. The familiarity helped but I just observed everything and anything I thought was different as I made my way to class by taking the long way around. My classroom was set in the new building which was under construction before I left but now it houses the preschool below and the higher classes above with the girl's hostel being the top floor.

My grade had 4 sections, each with their own syllabus. Mine was in the science division but as I elected math instead of computers, I change classes when I had to. The room was quite near to the entrance of the block, so it wasn't hard to find it but going inside is another matter. My palms got a bit sweaty but I willed myself in, discovering half of the strength already in their places and a lot of new faces in the midst of a few nostalgic ones. A few of the guys were excited to see me and the one person I contacted before smiled at me. Meher waved at me and I think he actually saved a spot for me. Sure he changed since the last 2 years but I knew this guy since we were 7years old. I was a bit relieved to see him but a few others seemed to recognize me as well. We greeted each other, I took my seat and a few guys called for me to pass the time before the teacher arrives. Sadly, I couldn't remember their names even though they knew mine. Instead of asking them, I waited for someone to call them and till then I made small talk about how the school use to be and how everyone has been and about a few other random stuff. It was nearly 8 am and the rest of the students made it before class has started. Our class teacher was the last to arrive and with that, my study life has started again.
