Chapter 15: The Spear

When the Emperor received the reports of the strange creatures he sent out an order for all troops to stay encamped close to the forests along the continents.

They were also to send out two patrols day and night to keep watch over any movement from the forest, soon after this first order was received a second message was also received detailing the name of the enemy: 'Demons'

Apart from this, the news that one of the 'demons' had been captured was kept confidential with only the Emperor and the old man knowing it existed.

In his throne room, the Emperor sat with a conflicted expression on his face, "Is this the threat you spoke of, father?"

The room was empty and if anyone else had seen this they'd have assumed the Emperor was talking to himself, reminiscing the past after all – the first Emperor had passed away several years ago, it was an event the entire Empire had mourned over.

"Maybe, maybe not." The old man appeared from thin air in the middle of the room – as if he was a ghost he simply 'existed' as if he'd always been there.

The old man watched as his son simply nodded and the conflicted expression returned to his face, "What of your guest? Has he given us any useful information of late?"

The old man stifled a laugh thinking of the 'guest' he had imprisoned in his research room if he hadn't seen the viciousness of the rest of its race he may have been fooled into thinking they were harmless based on its actions.

"He's been cooperative so far, of course, taking everything he says at face value would be foolish but he seems to know I can tell when he's lying to me so maybe he's figured out a way to fool me? But so far his actions are almost human-like, what's interesting about them however is that when he sleeps nothing can wake him, I stabbed a sword through his shoulder and yet nothing – he simply commented on it when he woke up it was… interesting." The old man recounted the strange encounter and experiment he'd performed the day prior, the so-called 'demons' truly had a unique nature.

Bailey opened his eyes in a dark space, he was floating in the void staring into a vast nothingness, the last thing he remembered was the voice echoing in his head before he passed out, then nothing.

He had not even the faintest of a clue as to what had happened after he'd lost consciousness, in fact to him it'd been just the time of the blink of an eye that he'd gone from the tent surrounded by dozens of wounded to this empty void of nothing.

"Hello?" He said quietly, after several minutes no response came – Bailey simply laughed at his own foolishness, of course, there was no one here there was literally nothing in the space surrounding him so how could there be another person?

He had no idea for how long he was floating in that void, in fact, he had no idea how he was even still alive – how was he even breathing was an example?

'Wait… breathing?' Bailey thought to himself, experimenting he stopped himself from breathing – but no matter how long he 'held' his breath nothing happened, 'So I don't need to breathe here? Where the hell am I?'

After making this discovery no explanation was too outlandish or imaginative in Baileys' eyes because he'd never heard of a case of a human not needing to breathe, even the first Emperor wasn't recorded to have this ability.

Of course, there was always the possibility that no one knew he had the ability – it was even more likely that even if someone possessed this ability under normal circumstances they wouldn't notice it because breathing would've become an unconscious habit to any human.

'What about using Elementa?' He thought suddenly, the endless void around him didn't seem to be completely lightless after all he could clearly see his entire body, the question was would there be any difference whether there was light or not?

'Only one way to find out I guess,' Bailey closed his eyes and tried to sense the light in his body, the warmth of the light had become as familiar as his own body to him in the last week – it was a part of him so by extension it was him.

What he didn't expect however was that when he tried to cycle his Elementa a change occurred in the dark space, a small light appeared the size of a fist as it floated around him – instantly he felt a mental connection to it, as if he could control it with a single thought.

He reached out and touched the ball of light, he carefully touched it and to his surprise, it was both physical and not, if he concentrated his hand would grasp the ball as if it was an object but with a lapse in focus his hand would pass right through it as if it was a ghost.

"Is this?" Bailey mumbled thinking of an impossible idea that didn't seem that impossible the longer he moved the ball of light around, "It really is…"

There was no mistaking the invisible connection between himself and the light, it was as if he had a third arm, he could move it as fluently as his own arms as it flew around him.

In a moment of inspiration a thought flashed through his mind, 'If I can control the ball can I change its shape?'

With this thought in mind, he moved the ball in front of him and began to shape the ball from memories in his head, slowly it began to fluctuate the change was akin to the calmness of a river to the raging of an ocean.

Beads of sweat dripped down his forehead as he continued to try and mould the shape of the ball into something different, slowly it began to take shape – from the vision in his mind it extended to the size of a pole.

Then it began to expand as a blade began to take shape, the vision in Baileys' mind was that of his own spear, the one he'd wielded during his short battle on the frontlines – he'd used it every day for a week giving him a vague familiarity with it during that short time.

Slowly the spear began to take form, it was purely formed out of Light Elementa as it took shape before him – the process took who knows how long: Hours, days, weeks or even months.

Time was irrelevant during the process, it was as if he'd completely lost his mind in the forging of the spear, several times he had to scrap the process and start again because it was either too short or too long, he was aiming for perfection in the process – a weapon made for him.

After who knows how long the spear was done, it was floating silently in front of him – it radiated light as it rippled with energy, Bailey had long since forgotten that he was surrounded by a pure void during this time.

He placed his hand forward onto the spear and slowly he lifted it, it felt comfortable in his hands as the light coursed into his body connecting him and the spear through a physical link.

Lightly he waved the spear in the darkness but as if by some miracle the 'void' disappeared and was replaced by light, he'd literally 'cut' through the void into another space, shocked but determined he slashed out of the 'prison' he was in into another space.

Surrounded by light Bailey looked around in confusion, "What the-"his words, however, were cut short as he disappeared from the space.

....

"Hell." Bailey said, his body suddenly rising from the bed, he quickly noticed he was no longer in that space full of light – instead he was somewhere he was familiar with, it was Lewis's command tent, 'but why am I here?' He thought.

"Bailey!"
