Chapter 4: Baby Stella
"One last long push, Maria, go!" the local midwife, thick sweat pooling around her forehead, soothingly commanded. "Yes! ohhhh gracia con dios! Thank God!" she joyfully exclaimed as she pulled out the pink skinned baby girl.
Leticia, amidst her physical pain mixed with emotional worries, smiled. "My baby Stella is so beautiful! Look! Her eyes are blue like the ocean!" The newborn baby gurgled her struggle with her new environment.
The young mother has adapted pretty well with the changes in her life brought about by the birth of Stella. The day to day struggles have become routine to her as she moved from caring for the infant to watching Adelina's shop.
One day, Leticia heard the windchime that was hanging above the shop door ring, and the door opened. A dark man with medium height and built came in, and looking around the shop, saw her nursing baby Stella. "I'm sorry Sir. How may I help you?" covering her bosom, she put the baby who had just fallen asleep in her makeshift cot.
"Ohhh... I see you have a baby in this shop. I would be very happy if that baby is up for sale. You see, my wife and I have been married for 20 years and we have tried having at least one child, but all attempts had been unsuccessful." the man paused, as though finding it hard to speak. "Well... I... okay, I will say this straight. I'm here now because a friend of mine told me that there's a young lady in this shop who has given birth to a baby girl out of wedlock. I would like to offer to buy your child for a reasonable price and save you the humiliation and punishment which government and society can cruelly throw on you once they find out about you." the man looked straight at her in a malicious and spiteful manner, and waited for her response. Leticia was aghast and couldn't suppress her anger and hurt at the man's obvious blackmail and insult to her person. " Look here mister... whoever you are! My baby is not up for sale and will never be. I will never give away my child to anybody whatever my status is. If you are trying to scare me with your blackmail attempt, you failed. I ask you to leave this shop right now and to never come back! Go!"
