Chapter 3: First Mission

Leomord stood there with the door open. This was his new room. The room was small and had a bed, a chair, a small table and a bathroom to the right. The windows were grimy. The walls were bleak. Dust and mold enveloped his nose.

Leo walked towards the window to open it. The floor creaked as he walked. The sounds of chattered entered the once silent room.

Leo walked into the room and closed the door. He then moved to take a shower. He then changed into the uniform of the knights which was armor in silver. Once he became a member of the Knights of Despair the color would change to black.

As Leo was about to walk out a knock came on his door.

When he opened the door a man who looked to be in his late 20s stood. His eyes were sharp as he eyed Leo from head to toe.

The man was the first to speak out. "Leomord?"

Leo nodded in response.

The man signaled to Leo's room. "May I come in?"

Leo nodded once again.

The man moved inside and closed the door.

Is he here to kill him? Is he sent by Daris the lender? Leo prepared to call Oath Keeper.

The man sat with a sigh on one of the chairs. "Don't look so tense. I'm not here to kill you, not yet at least."

Leo raised his eyebrow. Was that a threat?

The man looked around the room and his eyes landed on Leo. "Daris sent me, he wants the money back."

Leo sat on his bed. So he was correct. "I joined the knights it will take me time to get the money."

The man burst out into laughter. "You think Daris wants you to pay him monthly after what you did? No, he wants the entire amount back."

Leo's voice rose. "The entire amount? But that's impossible."

"Impossible? Look, kid you have two options. One, pay the full amount now. Two, get the sword back."

Leo stood up from his bed. "I cannot pay the full amount nor can I get the sword back. But I can pay the money monthly."

In response, the man also stood up. "Very well then, I hope you enjoy your stay here because soon you'll be back on the streets or better yet dead."

He then walked out of the room and slammed the door.

This was bad. Darris was not the wealthiest man in the city, but he did have connections to people who were wealthier. If one of them decided to kill him then, he would be unable to do anything. He had to find a way out of this.

But before Leo could think of anything another knock came on his door. This time it was the crusher.

The crusher stood there without saying anything. He sighed and sat on the chair the man had sat before.

"Who did you piss off?"

What do you mean?" asked Leo.

"Your days with the knights are going to get real bad. I don't know who wants you dad this bad, but your first mission is a smile once actually."

Leo did not answer. He had known this was going to happen, but this was faster than he had expected.

"You need to kill twenty men. They are a group on the outskirts of the city. Oh, and you are doing the mission alone."

Leo's eyes opened wide. "Alone?!"

"Listen, I cannot do anything to help you. This is all on you."

The crusher got up from his seat and walked towards the door. He stopped and looked at Leo through the corner of his eyes. "Do not die. That is an order from your superior. You have one week to get it done or else the repercussions are beyond my control."

The door closed.

Leo sat on his bed alone. The room was dimly lit as despair enveloped the room. He was going to be thrown out of the place he wanted to join. It's funny how life works sometimes.

Leo fell onto his bed. His eyes stared at the ceiling. The wind blew into the room as the light yellow curtains swayed back and forth. The only noise from the outside entered the room. Knights shouted as they trained. The porters shouted as they lifted their good, but Leo's mind was silent.

He had to figure a way to make this work. He had to kill those twenty men. He had to.

Leo got up from the bed. He clutched his hands. He would not let those who were more powerful than him bring him down. No, if they wanted to challenge him, he would give them a fight they would not forget.

Leo walked out of his room. His destination was the training grounds.

There were twenty men training. Some lifted the weights while others fought each other. The smell of sweat entered his nose as shouts from the knights entered his ears.

When Leo reached the training area a man approached him. He had a skinny build for a knight. His eyes and hair were black. He wore light armor as heavy armor was for when they went outside the fortress walls. His right hand and leg were in bandages. He had a walking aid made of wood. The man lumped with each step.

"You are Leomord the one who defeated crusher?" The man asked.

Leo nodded.

The man broke out in laughter. The knights in training looked towards them. "Haha, that old bastard. He needed a lesson. After all, no one can stay undefeated forever. My name is Gerrard. I'm in the same place as you although I don't have to kill twenty men."

Leo raised his eyebrow. "How do you know?"

"Well, word spreads quickly around here. I feel bad for you. Honestly, if I was in your place I would've placed my bags and left. What is the point of calling each other brothers, if we cannot look after each other? I would've helped you, but as you can see I'm in no condition to go out."

"If that's all I would like to start my training."

"Not talkative are we? You think Daris sent me don't you?"

Yes, that thought had crossed his mind. Leo did not know who he could trust in this place.

Gerrard laughed as he spoke. "Let me tell you a secret. See these wounds? They were courtesy of Darris's men. I'm the same as you."

Leo did not know what to say. Was this his fate? That is if he can kill the twenty men and even if he killed them, then what?

Gerrard moved closer to Leo. "Listen, after your training, I will come to your room. There is something we need to talk about and I cannot say it here. This is something beneficial to both you and me."

Great. Gerrard would be the third person to enter his room today. The other two had carried bad news he had no idea what Gerrard wanted to say.

Gerrard patted him on his back and walked away from the training area. Leo walked towards the training area. He did not plan on using Oath Keeper rather he would use one of the many swords kept in the training area.
