Chapter 4: Fortes fortuna adiuvat

In the middle of a grand room with a mighty throne sat a man on the floor. One could even mistake him for a boy, the way he looked. As feeble as the man was, nobody could mistake him for the feared demon king known throughout the lands for his notorious ways of killing, torture and seeking of fleshy pleasure. He was currently looking at a pile of rubble with red eyes. It seemed like he was about to cry.

"I want to eat!" he loudly complained with a rumbling stomach.

Being lightheaded because of hunger and thirst, he bit his tongue in order to stay focused.

"There should still be some food left in the kitchen. Maybe I am lucky and all the people already left..." he thought to himself. He was worried what people might do to him if he was ever found. Good thing that his bladder was already empty.

He slowly walked to the doors of the throne room, trying to peek outside only to find out that the slightly opened doors were apparently jammed. He pulled and pulled but nothing happened.

"Am I about to die of starvation?" He was so thirsty after all his hard work, that he thought about the water in the left boot of his armor. While looking back to his armor, he saw the broken off leg of a table lying next to the rubble. He suddenly had to think about a lesson his old m...

"Damn I swore not to think about that idiot anymore. And I fulfilled that promise for far longer than an average man can live and today I think about him twice... Did some rubble hit my head?"

He shook his aching head and walked over to the rubble, picked up the table leg and went back to the door. The small end of the wooden stick perfectly fitted into the door crack. He put his whole weight against his impromptu lever and after a few seconds the door started to open.

A smile formed on his face before hunger and thirst put a scowl back onto it. He scrambled out the door and looked down the empty hallway, clutching his lever like a lover. Slowly he walked along the long ancient carpet, carefully checking every crossway and trying to avoid people. Which was actually easy because there weren't any.

Finally he reached the staircase that would lead down to the kitchen. He dryly gulped once, because he knew that the probability of him meeting somebody down there was a lot higher than upstairs in his tower: it was existent. So ever so slowly he stepped down the stairs. If even a mouse farted it may have lead to a heart attack and a sudden end to this story but luckily they seemed to sense the importance and held it in.

After 15 minutes that seemed like ages, Siegfried finally reached the level with the kitchen on it. Rubbing his wooden pole for good luck, he looked past the door into the kitchen. The good smell of food almost robbing him of his fear. The things he saw inside hypnotized him, making him walk in a trance towards them and causing his mouth to salivate which should not have been possible as thirsty as he previously had been.

He reached out and tried to grab a pickle when he suddenly heard the words "You! What do you think you are doing?"

Shocked Siegfried couldn't think about anything and fainted for the third time that day.

-------------------------------------

Urth had been working at the castle as the kitchen keeper for a year now. She started there shortly after she became 16. She still remembered how her mother had been strictly against it being afraid after hearing all the stories about what things could happen to beautiful women at the castle. That idea kind of flustered her as she never thought about herself as someone beautiful. Although she was young she was also smart and needed the extra money. To this day she never regretted her decision although she never saw her parents anymore. She had shoulder long black hair and rather beautiful eyes, but the rest of her body was rather plain, making it hard to even tell if she was a girl or just some thin boy.

The second thing that spoke against the chance of her... being taken advantage of, was that the only girls that came into contact with the king, were the so called "personal workers". Women who served the kings daily needs. And daily was rather seldom when you had a king, who was in closed door cultivation for weeks or going on rampages in other countries for similar amounts of time.

As a benefit for the danger of being used as the kings "tool", the women were given cultivation materials and had the possibility to advance in body refinement with the manuals the castle had to offer. Stronger bodies meant that the "tools" would be more durable after all. She often talked about it to other people that this was actually worse than prostitution but deep down she actually was jealous that she was not pretty enough to be able to work as a personal worker. So as the kitchen keeper, one of the few positions in the castle with permanent residency, her life was rather stable and safe. Apart from the parts of the castle collapsing onto her that is, which had killed the previous kitchen keeper.

Urth was cleaning up the kitchen and carrying around some plates after the personal workers and cooks had returned to their living quarters in one of the side buildings when she suddenly saw a boy first sneaking into the kitchen and then stumbling towards the left over food like a zombie. She had to giggle a little bit when she saw the boy, with enormously oversized clothes holding a wooden something in his hands and ... oh my god ... did that boy wet himself?

She was about to laugh out loud, when she saw that the boy was trying to take a piece of the left over food that was meant as a reserve if the king was still hungry after his feast. Startled she said "You! What do you think you are doing?" only for the boy to freeze in place and fall over onto the floor. Luckily he didn't impale himself on his wooden pole. She put down the plates she was carrying and ran over to the boy. Relieved she heard the boy snoring a little bit, meaning he was still breathing. Looking at him, she thought he should be a little bit older than her. Looking closer at him, she started pitying him. Not because of his over-sized clothes or the wetness of his pants that went down to his left foot, but because he was not thin, as she first assumed but rather malnourished and also covered with multiple scars that were even visible under his clothes with the one on his face being the worst one.

"Poor boy... What has happened to you?" She tried to wake him up by shaking him a little, but it did no good. She realized the boy was light enough that even she should be able to carry him. And after thinking about it for a while, that was exactly what she did.

----------------------------

Siegfried had strange dreams. He was on a battlefield slaughtering enemies left and right while laughing manically. Although that was what he saw, he couldn't control his actions and he didn't enjoy them. He wanted it to stop. He tried to scream, but no words would come out. When his dream alter ego started to run in the direction of a small child and was about to jump onto it, he couldn't take it anymore. He finally woke up with a scream. Panting loudly for a few seconds. A person lying next to him asked him with a high voice: "Did you have a nightmare? Who actually are you?"

Siegfried took a few seconds to take in his surroundings. The moon was shining through the window, so he could see the silhouette of the person next to him and the room in general. He felt, that he was almost naked. So without thinking much about it he said: "Its a nice offer, little boy, but I must say that I am afraid, that I am not gay."

Waiting for a few seconds and not getting any response his memory slowly started to return. But before he could say or ask anything, he felt something hit his head, sending him back into a world of terrible dreams.
