Chapter 15: The Endless Abyss

"Impossible. You're lying. This place is getting into my head." Jervaintus hands tremble, his sweat pouring down his head like waterfalls.

The knight slowly approaches him. Her gaze fixed upon the eyes she shares with,

"I was the one who gave birth to you, named you."

She also explained the reason why she didn't stayed and raised him: Godfrey. The demigod hounded her day and night, hunting her across the realm. Jervaintus is still in shock from all of this,

"You…were the spirit…" He stares at the ground, looking empty.

"My name is Luscenda. Emperor of the Abyss." She finally introduces herself.

Jervaintus looks back up, keeping a strong grip on his sword handle,

"I don't know whether I should kill or hug you right now."

She approaches closer to him,

"Then let me make it up to you. Let me help you defeat the demigod and the god of the abyss. End the cycle once and for all."

Jervaintus laughs in a sinister tone,

"We are both warriors, are we not? You know of the only way to convince me that you are my mother, don't you?" He gets in his fighting stance.

Luscenda sighs and nods. She draws her long katana blade in preparation. The two warriors stare off against each other. She lunges at Jervaintus, her sword aimed to slash at him. He quickly deflects it with the back of his sword and parries. It goes through her easily as she uses her power to phase through his strike.

The ability is all to similar to the former lord of shadow. Luscenda explains to him that it is through her was how the original lords of the abyss were formed, along with their king. Jervaintus takes this opportunity to attack her.

She blocks several slashes aimed toward her neck with such fluidity, she gets in some cuts with her counters.

Jervaintus turns to see the wyvern eagerly watching them from a distance, he smiles at this,

"You had me be led by the wyvern so I could see you, eh?"

Luscenda continues her assault with her blade, each slash becoming quicker,

"Of course, I wanted to see my baby boy so badly."

Jervaintus asks her as their swords get tied up in an engagement,

"You created the lords so I could claim your powers?"

Luscenda pushes him off with a swift kick to the gut before nodding back at him. Jervaintus takes it up a notch and unleashes his aura of vengeance.

He charges at her with a more relaxed sword stance, dragging the blade along as he runs. Luscenda powers up her sword with mystical energy as they engage once more.

Jervaintus uses his shadow powers to get in one good hit at her. This knocks her backwards a few meters. She decides that she has enough,

"That is going to be enough. We got more pressing matters to attend to."

He ignores her and keeps running at her, the point of his sword aimed at her. She hits him in the forehead with the pommel of the blade, she's had enough. Jervaintus falls into the ground with a loud thud,

"Alright, I'm convinced your my mother. Now, can we get out of this place."

She sheathes her blade back into its scabbard and nods. She calls for the wyvern but as it approaches them, it goes into a defensive stance. Something is wrong. They both look around and see abyss demons emerging from the dark forests of the land. Luscenda notices something peculiar about these lot and warns Jervaintus,

"Be wary, these demons are loyal to the demigod. They are an elite class of demon assassins."

As Jervaintus hears the word assassin, he thinks of Sirena. He can't afford any more delays. As he readies his blade, all kinds of demon emerge from the place. The wyvern flies off to take care of the flying abyss demons. Jervaintus and Luscenda cover each others backs in this standoff. The horde, as they can see, is an endless sea of black. The demigod warrior is intent of ending them here and securing his victory. Jervaintus controls his anger and examines the situation carefully,

"He really wanted to make sure we don't escape this place."

Luscenda equips her helm, it glows with the same mystic power hidden in Jervaintus' sword,

"He plans to delay us, not trap us. If we don't make it out of here in time, humanity is lost. Did you receive that gemstone?" She turns to him.

Jervaintus shows her the trinket embedded in his sword.

"Good." She nods.

At the same time, back in the city of Pirhya, Whittham plans the city's defense with Sirena. General Durkins approaches them,

"The soldiers are restless. They fear for the next invasion." He looks at the map of the city on the table.

Whittham looks up,

"Any reports, general?"

Durkins shakes his head in uncertainty,

"The field is quiet. The skies remain dark. Not one sign of Godfrey reported by our scouts." He explains to them.

Whittham smiles as this is what he also expected,

"I designed this city to be the ultimate defense against the abyss demons."

Sirena turns to him, confused,

"How so?" She asks.

Whittham clears his throat,

"You remember Jervaintus' weapons and armor?"

She nods.

"A…concerned individual came to me offering these metals for no cost whatsoever." Whittham explains.

Sirena is stumped by this,

"Who were they?"

Whittham takes a deep breath,

"It was a woman. She claimed to be the Emperor of the Abyss."

This statement shocks both Durkins and Sirena.

"When she took off her helm, she made it known to me she was not jesting. And when I set upon her pale green eyes, I immediately got the message."

Durkins catches on,

"That must mean--"

"She is the dear mother of our hero." Whittham summarizes.

Sirena is taken aback by all this, she processes this message. Jervaintus' mother is the emperor of the abyss. Whittham then retells to them the legend of Godfrey. There was a missing link. He takes them to the mural on the ceiling,

"The legends forgot to mention. Godfrey was not the only champion of our creator. He had another champion by the name of Luscenda."

He further explains that they were both knights who possess the power but most importantly, the courage to defeat the Abyss God. When the time came to fight him, Godfrey was the one who broke and made a bargain with the God. Offering servitude in exchange for sparing his life. The God made one demand: to slay his lover to prove his loyalty and so he did. He was made into his servant and his love was raised to serve alongside him, without any memory of what happened to her.

The Creator managed to pull her back into the light and gave her back her memories and free will and tasked her to destroy the Abyss from the inside and so she did. Little by little, she tried to set up the demonic invasions to fail, she created the lords of the abyss and their king. She then had a child with Godfrey, although she regretted what had become to him.

She did not disclose to him that she was with child and deceived him. She herself went into the world and then left him in the care of the humans. Once Godfrey found out she was working against their new master, he ordered the demons loyal to him to hunt her down like prey. She escaped every single attempt of capture, hiding in the mortal world and in the abyss.

"Wait, Jervaintus is only around twenty. The legends were said to have happened several hundred, if not, thousands of years ago."

Whittham turns to her,

"She put him into an inanimate state, hidden in this world. When he came upon the shores near Hozran, he was picked up by the local orphanage." He clears her doubts.

At that same moment, Jervaintus and Luscenda, on the back of the wyvern make their way to the gatekeeper's land. Jervaintus furiously punches himself in the head,

"Being your son, I can believe. But also the son of that asshole? There's no alcohol in this world that can wash away that fact. I can't believe he's my father." He looks down on himself.

Luscenda grabs him by the shoulder and has him leaning on her,

"I'm sorry you had to be a part of this, my son. I know you will accomplish what I could not…"

Jervaintus looks up at her,

"What? You're going to help me beat him, right? And also the Abyss God?"

She hugs him tight as a mother could,

"In the next battle, I might not survive once your father finds out you learned the truth about your existence."

Jervaintus gets up and grabs onto her hand, to her surprise,

"I will not let my loved ones suffer, especially by his hands."

Luscenda smiles at the thought,

"That's my boy."

The gatekeeper sees them lands and greets them. She explains to him about the situation.

"Ah, so the time has come then." The great skeletal bird opens the gate.

Luscenda turns to him one more time,

"Thank you for helping my son, gatekeeper."

If the gatekeeper had flesh, he would certainly blush,

"Ah, don't worry about it lass. You two go do what you need to do. It's been an honor."

She takes a deep breath for the things to come, she turns to Jervaintus with a smirk,

"Let's go."
