Chapter 102: CHAPTER 102

"Mum you were calling me." I said, entering the parlor. I tried to sound as calm as I could through my racing heart.

I didn't know what my mom must have heard about me from Mama Aghogho and maybe from aunt Lisa. The fact that I was clueless was killing me.

I thought of how long she was downstairs and my heart missed a beat.

"Take your food." She replied as she walked over to one of the Sofas and I joined sitting opposite her. The tension was starting to build up and so was by anxiety.

"I need to have a talk with you Mirabel." My mum announced

I just new it! Mama Aghogho would never mind her business, I thought sighing.

Just then the thought of how I ran out of Scars caravan arrested my senses putting me at an ease and forcing a smile on my face.

"Okay mum." I finally replied looking down at my food.

I continued to play with the beans and plantain on my plate not once taking a bite out of fear that with how nervous I was feeling I would choke on it.

"First you were thinking hard, now you are smiling to yourself. What did you take you this girl?" My mum pointed out, startling me. She was looking at me like I had suddenly grown two horns.

"Mum I -i did something horrible.. "I blurted out, dropping my spoon on the table. I bit my lips really hard so that I could anchor on the pain.

"I already know." My mum replied, smiling. "And I'm proud of you, although I can't deny that it is really something wrong."

She stood up from her chair and walked over to my side, sitting beside me on the double Sofa.

I curled my fingers, digging my nail into my palm.

I refused to breath. I was scared that she had been heard about me and Scar or worse still that she saw me sneaking out of Scars caravan.

"I am so dead." I thought.

"Mum you don't know what I'm talking about just let me finish... It isn't about me com..."

"You want to tell me that you blackmailed my fri...Lisa i mean, right?" She asked, looking at me quizzically.

"Oh my lord Jesus! Mary and Joseph! Mummmmmm! how the hell do you know about that!" I exclaimed, jumping up from the sofa. My heart skipped then stopped.

"She told me. We actually met today to finalize our long time friendship or slavery. It was about time it ended anyway." My mum said laughing at the expression on my face. "Stop looking at me like that, I'm not a magical creature. I just gave you a reasonable explanation or what should be a reasonable explanation to anybody."

"I guess... "I muttered. "Mum did you know about her affair?" I asked, starting to feel a bit more relaxed now that I knew that she wasn't about to talk of my relationship with Scar.

"She told me about it one time, that was after I caught them in bed." My mum replied. She looked and sounded utterly disgusted.

"I couldn't tell her husband, what kind of friend would that make me. Besides it would have been my word against hers and I know her husband won't take Mine. He has a certain way of viewing you if you are poor.. I did try to understand her so I had come to the conclusion that she was a nymph.."

"Nymph." I giggled. "That's an odd way to put it".

"Well." she shrugged.

We both laughed for what felt like hours. Whenever we stopped laughing all we had to was we look at each other and start laughing all over again, till we both ended up laughing ourselves to tears.

"She did sleep with every man I saw her with not that I'm judging." My mum said amidst laughter.

"Anyway She called today for us to meet up. I didn't suspect anything because it was usual. We actually met in that newly opened fastfood you know ehm whats the name again?" She asked, closing her eyes. "Yesssss! I think it's Chicken republic. She asked that I order anything I wanted which I would have done, but I didn't have any money on me. I kept feeling uneasy_what if she got a call and decided to leave me or her purse got stolen, or she forgot her money at home, you know something like that. I insisted on taking just coke even though I was soooo hungry. You know what we both hate?" she asked, smiling.

"Embarrassment!" We both said in unison

"She started on a lighter mode  like nothing had even happened, she is a great pretender that I must give her."

"She wanted to play you." I muttered, shaking my head.

"She did in fact want to play me. She started saying something like I needed to convince you to give her back her fifty million naira. At the mention of fifty million I almost choked. I was in a lot of confusion like was it fifty million coins or fifty million stones you know anything other that fifty million naira." My mum chuckled.

"When she noticed how confused I was she started explaining how you blackmailed her with a recorder, which proved that she was sleeping with ken. In my defense I did warn her about him a thousand times, but she didn't listen to me. She accused me of telling you about it, or giving you a hint somehow that made you suspect something was going on between them, which prompted you to ask ken."

"She also accused me of giving you her husbands number. I told her I did not, guess what she replied? That as long as you took the number from my phone, it means I gave it to you. How logical is that. She went on to say she was going to forgive me if the money was returned to her untouched and our fri-- no slavery can go back to the way it used to be"

"I will never return the money to her." I almost yelled. I was getting all worked up and scared. "But what did you tell her?"

"I told her I couldn't tell you to return the money until I have heard your own part of the story. I still had trouble believing what she said although she showed me a text proving the supposed transaction."

"You know what. She suddenly started shouting at me, can you imagine?" My mum asked but it was rhetorical. I just kept staring at her as she recounted her conversation with aunt Lisa. At this point I had totally given up on my food.

"I guess it was becoming harder for her to keep up her act. She asked if I was trying to call her a liar or that she's not coherent enough. I told her that it was neither one of those, you are my daughter and I could not agree to something like that without hearing first from you. Besides she should calm down because the money to her is nothing to her. That's when she stood up with a sudden outburst shouting profanities here and there." My mum continued, now raising her voice a notch higher.

"The nerve of that woman!" I sighed, my face twitching in anger. "She was so lucky that I wasn't there."
