"Ow!" the man yelled in surprise.
His beautiful black tux was now adorned with pieces of tuna, lettuce, tomato, and liquid mayonnaise. Sun Mei jumped to her feet, trying to suppress her embarrassment as fast as she could. If she didn't fix this quickly, Mrs. Lin would kill her!
"I'm so sorry! I didn't see you there! This is entirely my fault! Please let me get you something to clean yourself. I will pay for any dry-cleaning expenses. Please forgive me..."
When Sun Mei actually found the courage to look at the man, she realized that he did not seem angry. Instead, he looked amused.
There was a faint smile on his face as he said, "There's no need to keep apologizing. This was clearly an accident. Plus, it might just be the most interesting thing that happened at this dinner party…"
Sun Mei, who was embarrassed beyond belief, wasn't sure whether she should laugh or not. Although the man seemed to be joking, it would probably be rude to laugh at Mrs. Lin's expense. Her boss was weirdly proud of her boring dinner parties.
"Could you just point me in the direction of the closest bathroom?" asked the man when he realized that she was not about to speak anytime soon.
"Yes. Yes, sir! Of course!"
Sun Mei picked up the empty salad bowl, which had fortunately not broken at the impact, and rushed back into the house. She could feel the man shooting her curious looks as she sprinted through the hallway. He probably thought she was a complete clown or an extremely incompetent waitress.
Sun Mei was really good at her actual job. Mr. and Mrs. Lin's sons loved her. She hated that she was being judged for her performance at a job she had never applied for in the first place.
"Here you go, sir! You'll find fresh towels in the cupboard," Sun Mei said as she stopped in front of a closed door.
"Thank you."
Sun Mei stood awkwardly with the bowl in hand outside the bathroom. She would have to head back to the kitchen and make another salad pretty soon, but she thought that if she kept this gentleman happy for as long as he could, maybe he wouldn't tell Mrs. Lin what exactly had happened to the first salad.
When the man walked out of the bathroom again, she felt her heart stop.
For the first time, she noticed how handsome he was. He was perhaps 10 years older than her, but he had a boyish charm that made his soft features look seductive. His dark hair was slightly messy and his eyes twinkled with mischief.
Unfortunately, his suit was completely ruined.
"What do you think?" he asked Sun Mei with a smile.
"I think I am probably going to get fired…" she muttered.
The man was taken aback. "What? But I scrubbed it for so long!"
"I must have done a wonderful job getting it dirty."
Sun Mei suddenly felt like crying again. The man, who could most likely see that, approached her tentatively.
"Hey, what's wrong? There are tears in your eyes…"
"I would like to know what's wrong too. Where is the salad that I asked for, Sun Mei?"
