Chapter 22: Ryan Mills - 20

As Snow started to once again get lost in thought he heard a cough from Emma, bringing his attention back to her.

Emma held a cup of wine in her hand shaking slightly in a uniform motion, stirring the red liquid inside in circles before bringing the cup up to her nose and taking a breath.

Slowly Snow felt himself get lost in admiring her graceful movements, each action of hers seemed perfect as if it had been practiced countless times until it became something akin to art, something that must be admired by anyone who witnessed it.

Even after spending so much time around her in these last two months working as her assistant, living in the same mansion as her, he still couldn't help but lose himself in admiring her at times like these.

As Emma finished her actions she lowered the glass of wine and looked at Snow, tilting her head slightly to the side a faint smile on her lips.

"I believe we can continue with our date now? I'd rather not be thinking of work right now." Contrary to the sweet smile on her face, her words held quite a bit of an edge to it, something that immediately snapped Snow out of his reverie.

One of Snow's eyes twitched at Emma's words, showing an embarrassed expression for a moment before he quickly controlled it, a natural, apologetic look appearing on his face.

"You're right, I'm sorry, I won't mention it again."

Emma held her gaze on Snow's face for a few seconds before shiting it away turning her head to the side and bring the wine glass to her mouth, taking a sip.

Snow held back the urge to frown feeling like he had missed something and tried to make small talk with her, a small smile on his lips.

"Has anything interesting happened lately?"

Emma glanced at him from the corner of her eyes before looking away again, maintaining her silence.

Just when Snow was starting to feel awkward from being ignored, Emma turned her head back in his direction, leaning back into her chair, and answered while shaking her head slightly.

"Things have been as usual lately with nothing to note, like a calm sea." She paused for a moment and looked into Snow's eyes, a certain solemnity in her eyes. "But it seems like some waves are coming soon."

Snow gulped imperceptibly, understanding some of the hidden meaning in her words, before nodding with a chuckle, a hint of nervousness concealed in it.

"Maybe we can ride the waves?" He probed.

Emma lowered her gaze to the table looking at it, seemingly lost in thought, before finally murmuring.

"Maybe."

It seemed like she was speaking to herself more than answering Snow but he still nodded, not minding it, and changed topics.

"Has the agency give you a role? You haven't told me anything about it." He asked, curiosity clearly apparent in his voice.

Hearing his question, Emma raised her gaze back to him and raised an eyebrow.

Snow looked at her in confusion for a moment before realizing that he had once again brought the conversation back to work.

He gave an awkward laugh and brought a hand to his neck rubbing it nervously.

Emma shook her head slightly and smirked, her amusement faintly showing.

She hummed and took another sip of her wine before answering with a small sigh.

"Nothing has caught my attention yet so I'm only refining my acting for now."

Nothing caught my attention… You should lower your standards in that case, no? Forget it, my mentality is way too different from a scion's to understand.

"Is that so…"

An awkward silence followed, broken only when the waiter brought them the food they had already ordered.

The food was neatly arranged on their plates giving it a certain artistic flair.

Snow couldn't help but admit that it was very visually appealing, but, looking at the amount of food on his plate and thinking back on the price, a reluctance that he had recently become intimately familiar with bloomed in this heart.

Looking at Emma eat her food in complete nonchalance, however, Snow could only let out a silent sigh in his heart and kick his stingy side to the curb, habitually ignoring it as he dug into the food.

Expertly cutting a bit of the meat while watching as its juices spilled out in the process and bringing it to his mouth, Snow couldn't help but reluctantly admit, that, as much as the price to quantity disparity set off his miserly side, the taste never failed to soothe him, leaving him looking forward to more.

After taking a couple of bites of his food Snow paused and looked at Emma as a thought settled in his mind, he opened his mouth and hesitated for a few moments before finally forcing the words out of his mouth.

"Won't your parents… oppose?" There was a bit of wariness in his voice as he asked that, both due to the possibility of it happening and due to Emma's potential reaction at the question.

Emma's fork and knife which was cutting the steak in her plate froze, something Snow rarely saw happen to her, a testament to how complicated this matter was, he guessed amid growing trepidation.

She stayed like that for a few seconds before she resumed her actions, all the while not looking at Snow.

Finally, Snow saw her open her mouth.

"Maybe. But, that something that I'll…" She paused, seemingly having realized something, and raised her head to look at Snow, her lips pursed slightly. "We, will have to deal with…" She finished softly.

As she finished saying that she immediately lowered her head to look at her plate once again and resumed her actions, almost seeming afraid of seeing Snow's reaction to her words. She didn't wait for him to respond as she continued.

"Don't worry, I'll make sure this matter affects you the least possible, you just have to play your role faithfully." As she said so she nodded almost imperceptibly to herself, seemingly reaffirming something to herself.

Snow's eyes seemed to dim slightly at her words, his mouth, which he had opened to answer before she interrupted him closed and he looked off to the side watching the other clients in the restaurant for a while in silence.

After a while he chuckled in a self-deprecating manner, a sardonic smile on his lips. "Right… My role…"

Not really sure what to say on this chapter to be honest.

This chapter had bit of a complicated undertone from the complicated feelings both Snow and Emma have on the situation, there's not really much for me to comment on :/
