Chapter 3: Elevator
Li Shen's phone started ringing. He was currently walking in the hospital's hall towards his patient's room. His fingers swiftly obtained his phone inside the pocket of his white coat. Thinking that it might be an important call from the company, he quickly answered without even reading the contact name.
"Hey, Li Shen!" Upon hearing such a familiar voice, he mentally rolled his eyes heavenwards.
"What now?" He asked right away, trying to cut their conversation short. He still has a lot of patients to tend to and he can't spare his time to pointless conversations.
Li Shen also thought that Liu Feng might be just bored and has nothing productive to do that's why he's messing up with him instead. Liu Feng does it to him all the time so he wouldn't be surprised if he is right now. Although Liu Feng is helping him manage Inspira Resorts and Hotels; which his old man assigned a few to him to manage before inheriting his position; in his stead, if he's out to tend patients at the hospital doing his other job, which is being a doctor. His old man knew about their setup and has given them his approval about the matter. Li Shen is currently the next in line CEO of his old man's company, which is the Li Corporation, a company that handles various fields mainly the entertainment industry, film industry and the series of branches of Inspira Resorts and Hotels. Aside from that, they also have the second biggest share in the hospital he's currently working, Liu Feng's family being the largest shareholder making them the head of the fifteen major hospital branches in China. Apparently, Liu Feng has no intention in inheriting his father's position as the director of the hospital that's why his younger brother who is 2 years younger than him is the current next in line director in training. Instead, Liu Feng helps Li Shen out in their family business. Seeing his son doesn't have the desire to be a doctor just like him and succeed his position, old director Liu focused on his youngest son and made a compromise with Li Shen's father that he would take his son under him and make him his subordinate in exchange of owning the second largest portion of shares thus making Liu Feng work alongside with Li Shen. Liu Feng is quite the carefree guy but he is skilled when it comes to managing and sorting things out. If it was not for his carefree soul he would easily make an excellent business advisor.
Liu Feng chuckled at the other side of the line. "Where are you?" He asked Li Shen which he answered that he was currently in the hospital, working. "What the- does it mean I'm stuck again in such a boring meeting?!" Liu Feng wailed on the other line. Apparently, there is always a weekly board meeting happening at Inspira's head office and Liu Feng is always stuck in those meetings every time Li Shen is not around to attend. Don't get him wrong, Liu Feng does love what he simply doesn't like to be on any of their meetings. The board members consist of old people from '40s to '50s mostly men and being able to attend such meetings and be stuck for 2-3 hours weekly is draining his dear life.
Li Shen smiled mischievously hearing Liu Feng's nonstop nagging. "Yes, buddy. You're stuck with my old man and the others as well. So I assume that you should get ready now before my assistant calls you nonstop, okay? I still need to attend to my patients." He said calmly making Liu Feng curse him when he learned Li Shen's father would be present in the meeting. His father often attends the meeting at Inspira, Liu Feng not knowing about it beforehand made him fuming mad. If he knew that he will be attending the meeting Liu Feng would have not agreed to come to the head office and let Li Shen attend the meeting himself. Whenever Li Shen's old man is around he would be made to report everything to him precisely.
"And you also need to attend the meetings! Damn you Li Shen, you traitor!" Liu Feng exclaimed before hanging up. Li Shen only chuckled at his friend's sudden outburst. The nurse who was with him saw it and had a faint blush that crept on her cheeks. He walked inside a hospital ward with the nurse tailing him. The nurse was busy fawning at him that he repeated himself in asking the patient's chart before getting ahold of it.
The patient smiled upon seeing him entering the room. "Good morning Mrs Zhen. How are you?" He greeted with a smile and checked her vitals. "You're recovering real good."
"Good morning Dr Li. I'm feeling great, actually, my grandchild will be visiting me today." There was a hint of excitement in her voice that made Li Shen smile at the patient.
"Madam Xiu Ying, I told you to call me Shen." Zhen Xiu Ying is one of Li Shen's patients that he has been observing for 3 months already. Out of all the patients under his care, he's quite close to Zhen Xiu Ying. She reminds him a lot of his late grandmother on his father's side. Zhen Xiu Ying is quite the storyteller, in her stories she mentions her grandchild a lot that's why Li Shen knows that this madam loves her grandchild dearly.
Hearing the news from her, Li Shen was happy for her. During her stay in the hospital she hasn't had any family members or guests that visited her that's why knowing about this, Li Shen always takes time to visit her ward whenever he's on duty. Aside from being her doctor, Zhen Xiu Ying has one other doctor who takes care of her whenever Li Shen is not around. For the time being, a nurse is assigned to take care of her for the meantime.
The old lady laughed at Li Shen's remarks, trying to correct the way she addresses him. He did a few check-ups on her and talked a bit before bidding goodbye.
They were once again walking in the hallway when the nurse accompanying him spoke. "Dr Li, last round for the morning at the left-wing."
"Thanks. I can manage from here, go back to your station." He said shortly, he was starting to get irritated with her around him. If only he doesn't need help he wouldn't be doing rounds in those fifteen wards at the right-wing with her daydreaming from time to time.
Li Shen is known not only for his skills but also for his killer looks in the whole hospital. Not only for the branch he's currently working at but the whole fifteen branches. Aside from having outstanding looks, he is also recognized as the sole heir of a business tycoon and the son of the second-largest shareholder of the Liu International Hospitals. The nurse he is with is, unfortunately, one of the victims. Li Shen is undeniably strict when it comes to work. That explains why he dislikes having female nurses around him during rounds. What can he do? Most of the nurses were girls.
Her facial expression turned sour. She expected Li Shen to be strict but she was still disappointed that she was told not to accompany him anymore. "Yes, Dr Li." The poor nurse said in resignation and turned her back on him after bowing and walked in the opposite direction.
He sighed and walked towards the elevator. He's on the eighth floor and he needs to go up another level to cross the other wing via the overpass. Unfortunately, he bumped into someone when they both entered the elevator abruptly.
"Sorry." They both muttered in unison while crouching down to pick up their stuff.
Li Shen picked up his clipboard and pen while the woman was busy gathering up her stuff that spilled from her paper bag. Li Shen picked up a nameplate that was supposed to be the woman. "Hi! I'm Wei!" Written in gold was engraved on the metallic nameplate. Li Shen accidentally caught a glimpse when he was picking it up.
"I think it's yours." Li Shen said reaching his hand out to hand her the nameplate.
Her eyes widened and quickly stood up after gathering the rest of her stuff back into her bag at grabbed the nameplate on his hands immediately. "Yes, it is indeed mine. Thank you." She gave him a slight bow.
A sense of familiarity came like a flash. He thought he saw her from somewhere before. Thinking he was just imagining things, he quickly brushed off the thought about it. "Sure, no problem." He said and entered the elevator instead. The door was closing when the realization finally struck him after his gaze landed on her face once again before the elevator closed.
"She was that waitress from the coffee shop." He muttered under his breath.
