Chapter 3: Chapter 3~ NightMare

I grab the door handle firmly in my hand and pull the old door open wide.

A sudden wind blows me towards the door and a bright light comes out from the door to meet me, I throw my wrists up to cover my face.

I open one of my eyes to see if the light's gone yet and someone is on the other side ready to tell me it's all a prank but instead I'm greeted by something I would never expect.

I'm in a street, instead of a road underneath me there's grass, and tall victorian buildings crowd for space around the street, old fashioned street lamps stand tall and stings of lights hang from building to building. What surprises me most though is that its midday, not the late evening.

"Is this heaven? Am I dreaming right now?" The words slip out before I can stop them, even though there's no one around to hear them. I thought I went into the hideout but I can clearly see the sky, I look up at the blue sky up above me.

And the buildings... they look strange in a way that I can't place. I'm pretty sure that email said... A bead of sweat forms on my face as I remember the email's words.

"A life rebuilding survival game that can let you start your life over! We offer you a chance to take part in NightMare!"

I spin around to see the hideout door slam closed behind me. On the back of it is another black card with a cursive N on it.

I pick up the card and scan over it. It's an introduction to the game along with something about a passive skill.....

A passive skill? Is this really some type of game? What do they want me to do? Why did I come here? I'm so busy with these questions swarming my head that I don't even notice or feel the slimy grey tentacle wrap around my ankle.

I only realize what's happening when my feet are dragged out from under me and I'm pulled backward. "What the..." I turn backward to see what happened and immediately wished I hadn't.

I hear a blood-curdling crunch and at that moment, I instinctively realized something, there is no such place as heaven.

I feel the tentacle wrap tighter around me as I look at the creature, it's large, gray, slimy, oily and covered in blood. Strange red markings cover its skin and it looks like it could be over six feet tall, long claws come from hands that are covered in blood and its face looks blank but its mouth is filled with small sharp teeth that are covered in blood, eight tentacles sprout from its back, one of which seems to be wrapped around my waist.

But the blood isn't the worst part, it's the human hand hanging limply from its mouth that scares me so much.

I feel my heart race into overdrive as I stare at the monster, and it stares back.

I feel tears prick my eyes as I stare at its beady red eyes, the pupil is so small that it looks like it almost doesn't exist, and red veins weave through the white's of its eye.

Is this the price I pay for trying to escape reality? Or for not trying hard enough to overcome it?

A dull thud fills the quiet as the blood-covered arm falls from the monster's mouth, I try not to look at it, I try not to see the blood but the smell of iron fills the air.

The monster lifts me into the air and I come closer and closer to its mouth. I see the blood oozing from its mouth, none of it it's own.

I look into its eyes and realize that even though I always thought that I wanted to die, so much so that I thought about killing myself, I don't want to die.

The five words fill my head as I dig my fingers into the slimy skin of the monster's tentacle that's holding me in place.

I desperately...

I close my eyes as I get closer and closer to my death.

I desperately want to live!

As soon as the words cross my mind I see a bright red light, even though my eyes are closed it only seems to grow. And suddenly there's a loud boom.

I'm thrown from the creature's grasp and am ruffly flung to the grass like a rag doll. I let out a grunt of pain as my shoulder comes in contact with the ground and opens my eyes to see what happened. Am I saved, "...?"

"Nice to meet you," I hear a masculine voice say as the monster is engulfed in red lightning and slowly burns to death. I almost gag at the smell of burning meat.

After a moment the monster falls to the ground in a lump of charred meat and the smoke clears to let me see a guy about my age standing on the other side of the dead monster.

"You escaped from hell just to come to another." There's a smirk on his face, what surprises me most about is his eyes, there an electric blue, like nothing I've seen before, and his hair is a raven black. "A foolish choice."

He's wearing an old leather jacket with a white dress shirt underneath, the first two buttons of the shirt are undone and in general, the outfit looks slightly messy. He's carrying a red crowbar that seems to have the same red lightning pulsing through it.

I look at him in shock as he walks towards me. I think he's coming to kill me like he did the monster but instead stops in front of me to pick up the card from this side of the door.

He reads it over quietly as if soaking up every detail about me from it.

After reading it he comes towards me, I flinch slightly as he crouches down in front of me. I'm surprised when he picks up my hands in his, "Look at this, you're bleeding."

I look down at my own hands in shock to see he's right, I don't know how it happened but they are somehow bleeding. He slides off his fingerless gloves at hands them to me to put on, I do.

He stands up again, looking over me as I tug on the gloves and wipe the blood on my jeans.

"You thought, 'I don't belong anywhere now, I'd be better off dead.' I know you did," I look at him in shock as he says exactly what I've been feeling all these years, "But you actually wanted to live, didn't you?"

I look down at the ground, I hate when people try to understand me, even more, when they're right. "No, I...I," I stutter out, still too shocked from all that happened to be able to form words.

He looks me over again, "Then do you want to die? Look at your hands and ask yourself, do I really want to die? Or is all this just the result of struggling so hard just to live?"

I look down at my bleeding hands. I'm too shocked by everything, really, to look at him.
