Chapter 4: Chapter Four

Derek silently helped Zeek get ready for bed then quickly went to his room. The only person he told anything to was Jake, but Jake wasn't a terrorist. Derek opened his computer and told Jake about the president's call. Jake told Derek everything was probably fine and that the others could handle it. Derek had to admit he was right. If Zeek wasn't out of commission he could seriously hurt someone. Come to think of it, he could probably still do some good amount of damage. Just the thought of what Zeek could do to him made Derek want to run for his life. Jake convinced him yet again that they wouldn't hurt him. He told Derek a number of things that made him feel better. Derek was glad to have a friend like Jake.

Derek tried to sleep that night, but the thought that Zeek could kill him with no hesitation kept him from actually falling asleep, so he messed around with his computer for the night. At least he didn't have to worry about getting Zeek up since that was Jax's job. Derek stared at his ceiling trying to rid himself of the thought of death at the hands of Zeek. Just when he thought he had succeeded Jax burst into his room causing Derek to fling himself off his bed. Derek glowered at Jax who was laughing and asked if he did that when anyone came into his room or if it was just him. Derek then got up and pointed at the door asking Jax to leave.

"Sorry can't do scaredy-cat. Zeek and the president both told me to put you on my team so I need to brief you." Jax stood in the doorway with his arms crossed clearly just agitated with the whole situation. "Since someone still has to look after Zeek you'll be staying here relaying messages to us over comlinks." Derek stared at him wondering if he was serious. "You can tell Zeek who will, in turn, tell us okay. Also, he has the file on the whole situation so get going." Derek had never punched someone before, but he was so close to hitting Jax right in his smug face. Derek hated not being able to talk. It caused others to treat him differently than everyone else, and that pissed him off. Derek pushed passed Jax which seemed to startle him a bit.

Derek went up to Zeek, who was reading the file Jax had spoke of, and he ripped it out if Zeek's hands and sat down with it by himself. Zeek and Jax were both looking at him very confused. "What did you say to him?" Zeek whispered, but Derek could hear him from where he was sitting.

"I was just telling him about the mission and then he pushed passed me and came out here." Jax shrugged and added, "maybe he's guilty." Derek has heard enough and stood up slamming his hands and the file onto the table in front of him. He wanted to yell at them and tell them he could hear him, but only tears came. He sat back down and silently cried. He could hear Zeek say something to Jax, but he couldn't make it out over his screaming thoughts.

Suddenly he felt a hand on his shoulder. He looked up and Mattie was sitting next to him with an empathetic smile. "Its okay Derek. They can be a bit insensitive to others at times. It comes with old age." Jax and Zeek both gave an offended hey. "Quiet you two. Can't you see you hurt his feelings? He's only been here for a few days and you've already reduced him to tears. You should be ashamed of yourselves." Mattie scolded them then looked back at Derek. "We all had a choice of coming here, well except Zeek, but you didn't really get a choice. I'm sorry that you were thrown into this, but just know that you have friends here." She gave him a reassuring pat on the back and gave Zeek and Jax a final reprimanding look and left.

Derek felt a bit better and wiped the tears from his face and went over to Jax and Zeek. "Your plan isn't going to work." Derek's hands were sharp as he signed, "but I know how to make it work." Jax scoffed which caused Zeek to elbow him. Zeek told Jax to hear Derek out. "Well, first off there's a high-end security system where the call originated from."

Jax cut him off, "wrong kiddo it came from an abandoned warehouse." Jax gave a smug look. Derek gave a sarcastic smile and continued.

"Actually they bounced the call to multiple places, but I tracked it down to a corporation just outside of Sheridan county Wyoming." Jax tried to say something but Derek cut him off, "the corporation isn't even up and running yet, but the power has been on for months, and the construction has stopped. I think you'll find your culprit there." Derek smirked at Jax's going mouth. Zeek finally spoke and asked how he had managed to figure it out. "Well I couldn't sleep last night so I kinda hacked into the phone lines and found the threat call and trace it." Derek gave a shepherd smile, all of his confidence gone now fearing he'd get yelled at for having into government property. Zeek just beamed at him and told him he was brilliant. "Really?" Derek's hands shook a little, but Zeek was serious. He thought what Derek had done was genius and a good use of his hacking skills. Derek felt that same weird feeling in his chest he'd felt last night. He wished he could make it stop.

"So what do you suggest we do then?" Jax's agitated voice snapped Derek from his thoughts. Derek then went into a plan that he thought of on the spot. It had to do with Jax's team going to the corporation then wait for Derek to break into their security system and let them in for them to do what they needed to but to also bring one back alive so they could get information. "I guess we can do that. I still think killing everyone is better." Jax had his arms crossed, but despite his body language, he was actually open to Derek's plan. It wasn't too bad for a newbie.

"You get going then give Derek a call once your there. He'll take it from there." Zeek leaned back in his chair and stretched. "Now get going well don't have time to lose." Jax nodded and was off gathering the members of the mission and then they were gone.

Derek put on a comlink and got his computer out and readied it for hacking. Zeek was seated next to him and watched him as his fingers moved quickly across the keyboard. Derek barely noticed that he was being watched. He was focused. If he messed this up he could get a lot of people killed. "You know it's gonna take a few hours to get to Wyoming, even with the spaceship." Derek stopped and looked at Zeek and he laughed. "Yes, we have a spaceship. Actually two. One belongs to Steve the other belongs to Bob." Derek nodded and closed his computer. He'd gotten a little too excited about being able to help that he forgot that Wyoming was a good ways away from DC.
