Chapter 3: Mecha stones, Star Energy stones and Salted Caramel Macarons

The reason mecha ores were in itself an extensive industry sector, was its heavy use in the construction of spacecrafts. The metal extracted from these ores held the properties necessary to overcome the many trials that travelling in space presented. Coupled with this milestone in technology for humanity was the discovery of energy stones; the source that powered these spacecrafts.

Energy stones are palm-sized spheres of solid glass that are formed in the thousands during the death of a star. In actuality, energy stones are not made of glass. But when they were first discovered by humanity, to comprehend its unfathomable existence, energy stones were likened to this existing substance. They were extremely light, so much so that when one held these energy stones, it almost seemed like it was hovering above the person's hand. If not for the fact energy stones emitted a tea-green glow, that didn't seem to come from any source within the stone, they would be practically undetectable.

In the Golden Age of Spatial Science, where there were great advancements in the understanding of energy stones and mecha ores, weaponry and communication devices markedly improved. Infrastructure was revolutionised to an unprecedented level and new spacecraft designs were extensively developed. Humanity was flourishing and the standard of living rose exponentially as the temporary authority institutions were able to relocate people from the over-populated Ocean to other inhabitable planets. This Ocean was the smaller secondary planet that researchers had prepared for Earth's inevitable demise, the perilous journey undertaken by 98% of Earth's population with only 60% of this number succeeding in the immigration.

Centuries after this era of prosperity, humanity was comfortable and complacent in their way of life. The decline of natural resources seemed a distant, if not practically impossible, reality when it was the never-ending number of celestial bodies that these resources came from. Yet, as Vincent examined the report before him, he marvelled at humanity's ability to forget the mistakes that were recorded in a great number of history books and films.

The eviction of the inhabitants of B-612 and the subsequent processes of relocation had proven a week of sleepless nights. He would not have attempted such an endeavour if not for the rich and abundant mecha ores that constituted 82% of the planet's bedrock. It was deemed a phenomenon when it was discovered by a graduate researching mecha ores, who had been invited by OtterSpace Station for the documentary on Adley Coulter. The last leg of the journey for the filming team had been planned for Coulter's birth planet to shed light on B-612's unique method of mining, or in this case fishing, for mecha ores. The result was the realisation that it was the water that was dense with miniscule particles of mecha ores that had been eroded from the substructure of the planet that were then absorbed by the fish.

This discovery was still being researched and reported 6 months after its existence had been made known to Garden. In a time where planets that were not mined constituted of an average of 17% mecha ores in their foundation, B-612 was a miracle. The businessmen and politicians had been salivating at this cash cow for a month before the Emperor had decreed the grant which had been meticulously formulated by his advisors. The conditions being that the citizens of B-612 be rehoused before any operations were to commence, and for the project to be headed by the emperor's own people.

Thus, the role of rehousing the inhabitants of B-612 fell to Vincent.

"I only trust you with this very important job." Finnegan had smiled sweetly, all teeth bared, as he handed the papers to his closest confidante.

A soft sigh passed Vincent's lips as he rose from his seat in his study and opened the large arched window that faced the courtyard. When he was frustrated or tired with work, he would typically direct his gaze to this window on his right and clear his mind by taking in the scenery. But since the gardener had been removed two weeks ago, the courtyard had begun to decline from its previously ethereal form.

Closing his eyes to escape from the monstrosity that was currently his garden, Vincent reviewed in his mind the public events he had to partake in upcoming days and the tasks he had to complete. When he finally opened his eyes, Kai, his butler, was silently behind him holding two hangers of formal outfits.

"Which one would my Lord prefer for tomorrow's welcoming function?"

"Whichever one you deem fit Kai. You don't need to ask me."

"I think the midnight blue overcoat and black knee-high boots. They match your eyes-"

Vincent glanced at his grey eyes in the window's reflection.

"-and your malicious dark soul."

"Kai-"

"No more, my Lord. I don't think I can stand any more of this facade of our relationship. You promised that you would care for me when I left my family to serve you." Kai hiccuped as he tried to choke down his tears.

The room was deathly silent and the breeze that entered from the window was no longer calming.

"It was one macaroon."

"But it was my favourite salted caramel flavour!" Vincent couldn't stand Kai's whining anymore.

"I'll buy you-"

"I only want the macaroon you ate!"

"Nothing I can do about that now can I?"

Finnegan who had heard the conversation between Vincent and Kai halted at the top of the stairs. He decided that what he needed to say to his best friend was no longer as urgent. But the flower bot flying above his head didn't seem to get the message.

"Announcing Finnegan Eldridge!"

The voices that leaked from study room froze. The quiet was then broken by the sound of wheels. Kai rushed into Finnegan's arms and wailed like a newborn babe; loudly proclaiming his grievances and beseeching the Great Emperor to serve him justice.

Finnegan didn't need to enter Vincent's study to know the man was long gone, out the window probably to Sir Asoka's shop.
