Chapter 1: The Beginning

Athwart stood at the balcony of the second floor of a small residence which gave him a full view of the small territory he was in. Beside him was a man that, he guessed, ages twenty and above based on his appearance.

His bright smile compliments his bright grey eyes and jet black hair. He was slightly taller than me and was pretty well built body. If not for his tan skin and that deep voice that he has, he could be mistaken as a teenager.

Athwart looked at the scant number of people that the territory posses, that goes to and from establishments.

"This is for me to manage?" Athwart asked to the man standing happily beside him.

"Yes, I and them are yours to command." he replied

"And we were fighting what again?"

"Demons and Deranged or Banished Gods, simply, we call them Mjodirs" the man quickly replied.

Athwart pinched the bridge of his nose as he felt a headache coming.

He then moved his hand towards the area below his collarbone where a burning mark, a still painful tattoo of a scythe, appeared.

A few moments ago, as soon as I opened my eyes in this foreign world, this constantly smiling man immediately dragged me out of the balcony.

Before he could open the balcony doors, I already prepared myself for the bright morning sky and the cheerful masses to welcome their long lost prince.

Contrary to my expectations, what greeted me was the dim sky and the people that walks around the territory. They occasionally took a glance in my direction but they don't seem to mind my existence at all.

It was then that the man beside him explained roughly everything to me. According to him, he world in front of me, was a part of what they call the Abyss and as a "Chosen" it was my job to prevent "Mjodirs" from leaving this world.

He also briefly introduced himself and how he were supposed to be my Guide.

"Where are they? Are they going to attack now?" Athwart asked again.

"They won't attack for another three months. The clock tower will rung if the portal is to open." Nigh pointed to a small plaza at the center of the territory. A small 4-faced clock tower sits at the center.

"The moment the clock tower rung, that portal," Nigh pointed towards the distance where I saw a portal, that somehow resembled the portal in Minecraft. "will open up and spew a few Mjodirs to which you have to deal with."

"That means, we'll be protected for the next three months right?"

"You'll be protected for the next three months, yes." Nigh said.

Athwart sighed. "I'm still alive right?" I asked.

"Yes."

"How do I go back?"

"Unfortunately, you can't at the moment. If you made it past 3 months you can naturally go in and out of the Abyss and be able to return." Nigh explained. As Nigh kept on explaining the basics, the more suspicious Athwart becomes.

"..and spew a few Mjodirs to which you have to deal with."

"You'll be protected for the next three months, yes."

Athwart recalled some of what Nigh said. They seem to hint that although he manages this world, he was not officially part of it.

"You mentioned that there were Chosen before me."

"There were a few hundred, I guess." Nigh replied.

Athwart had a bad premonition that, what he was about to ask next was no good news to him.

"What happened to them?"

"They failed to protect the territory and thus died. Our job was preventing Mjodirs from coming out of the territory, so, either the Mjodirs kill you or we kill you before any Mjodir could escape, would solve that problem." Nigh looked at Athwart and explained in a very calm voice.

" Then you would be replaced and this world would be protected for another three months." Nigh said, his unchanging smile never left his face. To Athwart, however, this smile look like a lot bigger and a lot sinister.

"Don't worry, there are still three months to prepare, as your Guide, I advise you to spend every day wisely." Nigh said as he faced the terrified Athwart.

Somewhere in the Abyss, a voice echoed out.

"The Chosen have all arrived."

"The three month protection has began."

"May the Abyss look upon them."
