Chapter 1: The Ingredients for Magic
October 22nd, 9 days until Hallows Eve.
The night air made Ever's skin crawl. She was sure the ingredient she was looking for was somewhere around here. The sound of trickling water was heard not too far away, as she made her way through the dark forest. It was almost midnight. If she didn't hurry then she would miss her chance. The flower of Bythenia only bloomed once a year, on a chilly night in the middle of October when the time is right.
"Crap!" Ever squealed, as her foot tripped on a branch and she felt her body crashing down.
She landed face-first in a pile of leaves. Her brown hair, which was usually shiny and dyed at the tips a shade of ombré, was now full of leaves. Ever blew a fly-away strand from her eyes and picked herself up off the dirty ground. Then she continued to scan the murky forest with only the moon as her guide.
She saw a glimmer in the corner of her eye, turning to follow the faint glow, the flower was soon in sight. Bythenia, born from from frost and blood, it shimmers a muted purple and emits a cold air. Now that the flower was found the next step was to successfully harvest it. Ever reached into her pocket and pulled out a small shovel, and a glass box. She had already cast a spell to temporarily make her pockets a bigger space to store the necessary tools for her late night adventure. As she bent down and started to slowly excavate the flower a harsh, cool breeze whistled past her. A tingle ran down her spine and she fought the chill that was starting to slow her movements.
'Damn flower, you will not best me,' she thought, as a fierce light gleamed in her eyes. She stared at the flower as her originally brown eyes changed to a deep red colour, indicating that her magic was in effect. Her magic was innate and she usually never needed to cast a chant aloud. Only when enchanting items or people will she actually utter a spell, because it's much more precise. Some people were just born able to innately feel the magic in the air. However, only from practicing and applying oneself to the laws of magic would the power to wield mana—the essence of magic—actually work.
The flower calmed itself, and Ever got to work, carefully digging the plant out and placing it in the glass box. Her work for tonight was complete. Only five more ingredients to collect: wings of a faerie, tears of a water spirit, bark of the oldest oak, kernels of golden corn, and seeds from a giant pumpkin. Then finally she will begin to brew her recipe—the recipe for the most magnificent candy! Whoever receives the candy will be granted a wish, however it must fall into the laws of cause and effect. Therefore, bringing the dead back to life, time travel, forceful love, and a few other types of wishes like 'world peace' cannot be done. Although, if the wisher was smart then they could have their desires come to fruition.
She night air was cool as she made her way back home. Ever only paused a moment, a smirk settled on her face.
'Fine, keep watching, I know you're there creature of the night.'
Nothing ever escapes Ever's notice, her only fault was that she is a bit clumsy when not wielding magic. She knew the new neighbour that moved in a couple of days ago was not good news for the little humans in the area. Yet, this was her territory, and so she will protect the ignorant and be vigilant towards the newcomer. She's already lived a couple hundred years now, but retains the face of a 20 year old woman. Her personality is not naive nor rash, she will wait and see what happens in the days to come. For now, she must finish making her candy for all the guest that will visit on Halloween night.
