Chapter 2: Chapter Two

Hearing the doorbell once again I think how busy we've been this week. I turn to see another girl, with dark hair and bright red glasses, walk in. She's tall, nearly as tall as me which was impressive on its own.

"Hello dear! Welcome to the shop!" I smile, but she doesn't return it. She seems determined.

"Hello miss." Ah, the honor she's given me. "I have a problem I need help with." Of course, dearie. There's always another problem.

"Yes-"

"I need to get rid of someone's emotions."

I pause. Odd request. What would you gain from this? "What a random thing! Yes dearie, we've got some ingredients and incantations here-"

"Will it hurt them?"

I stop and face her directly, she seems concerned, maybe a little fearful? But this isnt something small she's asking for. This could cause a lot of damage. I walk toward her, "Listen here," damn mortals, "I don't think you understand the dangers you're asking for." Why would she wants someone's emotions to disappear? Why would she want to take that from someone?

"Dear, magic is powerful and it does harm, why would you want to cause this harm? To who do you think deserves this harm?" I know the perfect spell, how determined is she to do this though? How much pain is she willing to cause?

How much is she willing to sacrifice?

Her eyes seem to get watery, "I don't want him to feel angry anymore."

Sighing, "dear I understand you're upset, and I will help you with this if you wish. I have other things though, we can make him realize it's a horrible thing, we can make him feel more guilt than anyone has before. There are many options we can discuss."

I want to test her anger, "we can make him feel every painful thing he's ever done you to hit him all at once." the angrier she is, the more she'll be willing to give up, the more years she'll sacrifice.

The more years to pay off my debt.

"Please," now there's something in the air, a strange feeling, "I just don't want him to be angry at me anymore."

*******

This poor child. I feel her pain, I wish I could explain to her how deeply I feel her pain. My empathy is powered so high due to my powers and I truly feel what she's been through as she spilled her story to me. Carmen, I discovered her name was, not by her telling me but instead by a half story she quickly told where her father had yelled it while berating her. I feel she imitated his voice very well, or she's just very dramatic. I honestly hope to never know.

But, the magic she is wanting to use is dangerous. It could hurt more than just the person she wants.

As suspected, she's using magic for the wrong reasons.

"Alright dearie, now as we discussed all magic has a price."

"I understand." She said solemnly, she is just tired of the pain she's been put through. She thinks her father hurts her because he hates her, but it could be anything. He could just enjoy it.

Some mortals do enjoy causing pain, and the way she's described the man I wouldn't put it past him.

Monstrous creatures.

"Well then, I'll take you over to the counter and I'll just need you to sign your name for my logs!"

Just then, the door bell goes off and I look over to see Ellie. "Well hello d-"

"Can it lady!"

Oh, I see the final penny has dropped for her earlier transaction. I can see a boy outside of the shop, pushed up against the window, staring at Ellie. "Has your soulmate finally seen what you wanted him to see?"

"Yes but I think he's seen much more! He keeps asking for children, and when we'll move to a better school district! And...and... and he's trying to make me stop working so I can just stay home and clean! That's not for me! I like my job! He won't listen to anything I say. It's not fair! I want my money back and I want you to undo this CURSE!"

Ah yes, of course it's become a curse now that it's no longer exactly the way you wanted. Did your dream not turn out the way you wished? Have you been crushed? Or is your crush just not as good a soulmate as you hoped?

Before I can open my mouth, Carmen stands and walks across the shop to the door until the doorbell goes off again and she's gone. Pity, I was sure I'd be able to sign her for at least 15 years after learning the details.

"What the hell is she doing?" Ellie shouts, I realize Carmen has not left, but instead gone out to talk to the young man waiting outside the shop. The soulmate who can't live up to expectations.

It looks as if she's trying to convince him of something, what she doesn't realize is once one of those spells are cast they can't be undone and nothing can be said to change their minds.

Wait.

Wait, he's leaving. His eyes looked as if they became clear again and he decided to leave, this is unheard of. What had she said to him? How did she do that?

Walking to the door, almost following Ellie out as she yells after him trying to get him to come back, right before I can ask her anything she speaks up. "She got exactly what she wanted, but it wasn't enough. It wasn't what he wanted. He just wanted to go home. I hope he can go back to normal and not have anything to worry about after having to deal with that crazy girl."

It wasn't what he wanted?

******

She's very sweet, she seems to have a good heart but the request she's made to me still shows she's full of some sort of darkness.

I do secretly wish her the best, I hope she can find a way to live her life the way she wishes she could.

"Alright now dear, don't forget after signing the book you may become a tad sluggish. But! It's nothing to worry about, just showing that the magic is real." I smile my brightest smile at her as she grabs the pen and signs quickly, even following the rest of the names in the book and writing what she's bought without me asking. Just before I can peak over the counter and see the color of the ink, she closes the book.

"Thank you so much, I appreciate your help so much. I'm so excited to be able to feel a little more freedom. I hope we can bond again, like we used to." She seems truly happy.

Very happy, no bags under her eyes, she seems very awake. Not at all sluggish. I see no difference as when she first walked in to now, except now she seems legitimately happy.

Not only that, but I had that feeling earlier... "I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day dear," this is strange, "but may I offer you something before you leave?"

"Oh, sure. What is it?"

Could she be what I think? "The pen you signed with is a mood pen, it's very interesting. It changes depending on what you're feeling when you sign! I always let everyone know what their mood is when they leave, to make sure that everyone is having as great a time at the shop as I do!"

"Oh that's so cool! The ink came out like a dark orange when I signed. What does that mean?"

Orange? "Oh dear! That means you're full of glee! Isn't that exciting!" I'm smiling, but I'm confused... and concerned? Orange ink? I've never seen orange ink before. Light or dark orange ink. I'll have to check the book after she leaves, it was probably an off color of red. Which would make much more sense, considering what she came in for.

She waves as she walks through the door and down the sidewalk, walking around the counter I grab the book to put it away in the drawer, but before locking the drawer I check the page she signed.

I wouldn't say orange, maybe a bronze-ish color. Semantics aside, I've never seen this before. I'm not sure what to make of this ink color, I'm not sure what she is.

I just know she isn't mortal. This is to odd to be anything mortal related.

But to find out exactly what she is, to find out exactly what's going on, I need to step over the line a little.

I need to do something dangerous.

I need to talk to the coven leader.
