Chapter 3: Caitlyn

"Yours is here, huh." The female ghost observed Elliot trying, and failing, to get Ray to stop crying.

"Mine may not even turn up... I fucked up too badly this time..."

She turned and floated around the room, coming to a stop next to Elliot. It had been a day since the plane had crashed and most of the families were here.

If her family was coming, they should have reached long ago.

"Nope, still not here. Does he ever stop crying?" She gestured to the exhausted and still sobbing Ray.

"He'll stop when he has had enough." Elliot looked at Ray with a soft smile and patted his head. "He was always a crybaby and could go on for hours."

She stared at Elliot and Ray in silence.

"I haven't spotted anyone else from the plane. I'm not a hundred per cent sure but, I'm pretty sure we're the only ones here..."

"I think... that there is a reason why we are still here. I mean why else would we be the only ones here out of the 300+ people on the plane?" She pointed out, then zoomed away as a new set of people walked into the hall.

###

Caitlyn walked towards Ray with an armful of snacks.

She had a headache, not knowing what to tell her childhood friend.

The initial investigation reports of the crash seemed to point to a suicide attempt by the pilot. But that had yet to be confirmed.

Other theories included pilot error, bombs, system failure, weather issues. But seeing as there was no mayday call by the pilots and the weather seemed fine, it was a suspicious crash.

The aeroplane was a new one with the highest safety ratings, having just been upgraded by the airline companies. The likelihood of it being due to a faulty aircraft was pretty low.

While that did not matter that much; what she was terrified off was Ray falling to pieces.

When his father died, Ray still had Elliot, her, and his mom to look after him. Even so, he had attempted suicide.

She had almost lost her best friend then.

When his mother was dying from cancer.,Ray had sunk back into depression, barely surviving with Elliot forcibly moving in to look after him and prevent yet another suicide attempt.

He had prevented quite a few, and Ray had barely survived his mother's death. He was kept alive by Elliot's hand.

She was overseas at that time, studying for her university degree.

Knowing she had almost lost her best friend once again, she had moved back to the country the moment she got her degree and tried to help Elliot in keeping Ray occupied.

He always did have an overactive imagination.

Knowing his love for plants and all things nature, she and Elliot hatched a plan to get Ray to open his flower shop. One where they could visit him whenever their schedules were free and to keep him occupied, away from the sad parts of his mind.

He could then be happy in the midst of the things he loved, and they wouldn't have to worry about him attempting suicide.

Again.

But now, Elliot, who has been by his side, is gone.

Ray didn't have his warrior by his side anymore.

What if he lost his will to live? Looking at how he is acting now, Caitlyn was worried that she would lose her friend again. Almost like she did before.

What was she to do now?

She sighed as she sat down next to him.

"Ray. I got you some food."

"I'm not hungry."

"Ray, Elliot wouldn't want to see you like that..." Softly comforting her best friend, she tried to persuade him to have a bite.

"Yes, eat!" Elliot stood next to her nodding.

"They can't hear you, you know..." The female ghost drifted back in front of him. "No one can..."

"I know but... I still feel like, If maybe he could feel my presence, he'll be alright?" Elliot looked worriedly at the still sobbing figure, being somewhat force-fed by the woman sitting next to him.

"Maybe that's why I'm still here... That as long as he isn't alright, I cannot go..."

They watched the two in silence.

"... Then why am I still here?" The female ghost asked.

Not knowing what to do, both ghosts just sat around Caitlyn and Ray, watching one cry while the other comforted him.

"Isn't this, somewhat not the usual?" She pointed to the duo.

"Shouldn't it be the girl that is sobbing and the guy doing the comforting?"

Elliot looked at the female ghost and sighed.

"Ray is... different... and Caitlyn? Well, she always helped to look out for him..."

"She should be able to help me with Ray now. I just hope that that would be enough."
