Chapter 3: Can't keep up
Keep calm and write something...
If I have to describe Al he has too much energy. If I have to describe myself I have an ample of energy. Ample amount for work. Ample amount for socialization. Ample amount for hobbies. Losing sleep and working your brains for ten hours is taking its toll on me especially because of my anemia. It doesn't help as well that the first thing that our team did when we arrived early in the morning is to hike going to our lodging. They said it will only take thirty minutes to get there. But i didn't thought that thirty minutes was actually an hour. My bag is getting heavier and my knees are starting to shake. My laboured breathing can be heard by my half awake colleagues but I didn't care. I just wanted to curse the person who planned this trip and focus myself repeating the breathing excercise I learned from one of the speakers during a seminar. 'Breathe in from your nose and then breathe out from your mouth... "
LWhat is making it a bearable is the thought that there is someone else besides me who would like to curse the person who choose our lodging. Of course Al was in the front line. But from time to time he will slow his pace to match us who are being left behind. He looked at me twice or more when he heared me saying my mantra. He was close enough to me that I was able to hear him chuckle a bit before asking if I needed help. I took a long step ahead of him because the wind is blowing his scent directly at my face. It's distracting me so much so I just said, "I'm fine. You can go and take Elis' bag. I can manage." I was not only trying to convince him but also my self. He just smiled and offered help to Elis which she also declined because the tiny girl is just too shy.
"This is making me hungry." He said out of the blue. Elis and I both looked at him.
"Yeah". I said quite annoyed.
I wanted to tell him to shut up. I'm not really a morning person. I am especially grumpy if I didn't had my morning breakfast and my instant coffee. He knows it. He's been my workmate for seven years. We recently become partners for several projects and during my worst days he knows how moody I can get at times. "Hope they have eggs or bacon there for our breakfast. A hot chocolate too willl be good, don't you think?" But obviously this guy didn't noticed it.
I sighed. I couldn't get angry with this person even if I want to. He makes me guilty when I'm furious about something and he is very calm about it. He makes me look stupid." A nice warm bed will be good." I muttered.
He laugh but I didn't know the reason. I didn't ask what seems to be funny about what I said because he is Al. He acts crazy at times. I look ahead and I saw a red brick roof up ahead. "Finally!" Elis said with a glee. A sudden energy filled her and she quickly sprinted ahead of us. I was about to follow her when suddenly Al grab me by the shoulder.
"Wait." He said with a grim look. Something is wrong. It scared me and my initial reaction was to look back to where we came from. Our footsteps are still fresh on the damp soil. There was nothing there. But I smell a faint sour smell. Then something blue obscured my view I yelped. "Scared you right?"
How can I forget. This person looks harmless at work but suddenly gets quickie all of a sudden. Like he suddenly took some kind of pill to be momentarily crazy. Al White looks good. No he is really really good looking. Many many girls get fools by his quiye demeanor which is truw if you don't know his sudden kick. Likewise, girls who idolized him for something he is not suddenly loose interest at him. During those times I wonder if people's feelings for the person they like is really shallow. Maybe not all. Al is okay. A bit weird at times but he is ok. As long as he doesn't comes close to me as possible.
I gave him a dry laugh. "Very funny." I pushed him away and stomped my feet towards the lodge. I wanted to hide the fact that the smell gave me goosebumps and the fear will show on my face when he stares like he usually does.
