Chapter 7: The Resourceful Engineer

12 hours earlier.....

A young man named Tony Fletcher walked up to his father who was on a ladder in their backyard warehouse.

His father, though over 68 years of age, was still very vibrant and energetic. He used to be one of the youngest engineers who got an internship to study at the World Institute Of Space Administration at the young age of fifteen.

He worked with important scientists on mech projects and concepts until funding was stopped and redirected towards the space propulsion projects.

It was then, his position as a mechanical engineer and mech designer became obsolete and he was fired from his job.

Choosing to stay on earth at 'The Brain Drain' , he worked with others to create a team and try to make earth livable for those who remained after all the 'intelligent minds' had left the planet.

Getting a town to properly run wasn't easy but the team was able to achieve this after all the chaos and anarchy that had taken place many years ago.

Now he and his son work on any mechanical issues that the town may be faced with…

Dad, Tony said. The town's pump seems to be giving some trouble. A towns person told me on my way back from the store.

The pump which was used to pull water from a lake had broken down. The pump was very far away from the town and needed repair.

Samuel smiled and said that he would check it later as he came down from the ladder.

Come, he continued as he motioned to his son to come check this out. They had been working on a mech project for quite some time.

It sat covered at the back of the warehouse.

On the nearby table in the warehouse, he point to a group of batteries that were connected together.

Using metal parts that they could come across either from debris that survived earth re-entry or from local dumps, they created a mech suit as a prototype.

Though it could not travel long distances, fly or go into space, it was still able to move and walk around.

Samuel: I was able to increase the output from this battery and decrease the power usage needed for the suit. Thus it can now run for fifteen minutes, isn't that great, he said with excitement.

Tony: From five to fifteen minutes, excellent, he responded with joy.

Samuel: It is unfortunate that I have no experience as a battery technician or creating other sources for power but the design is pretty…..neat.

Tony: I wouldn't say neat...Tony joked but it is alright.

We will take it out tomorrow, Samuel stated.

Samuel and Tony ventured back into their wooden home around 5:30 pm. After having dinner and bathing, Tony went upstairs in the attic to look through their telescope.

When his father came up to see what he was doing, he told his dad that there must have been some kind of battle taking place in space the night before. There were massive explosions in the space above the earth.

Samuel gave a very shocked look as there had never been any activity in and around their space for quite some time.

This would mean that they would acquire parts when they fall down to earth.

Then we would have something to look forward to, Samuel smiled as he began to descend the attic stairway.

Tony spent some time looking at the stars before heading to bed. His father had always wanted to go into space in his older years however he was never able to. After thee rich and the intelligent left the planet many years ago, no one has ever returned to Earth or this side of earth.

Due to the past volcanic activities and the risen sea levels most of the other habital lands have been buried with ash or covered underwater. The stars were the only thing of interest at this point.

That's why his father bought this telescope. To reminisce on his childhood dream which ended many years ago.

He checked in on his father as he was heading to his bedroom however his father was not in his bed.

When he looked through the back window of their wooden home, the light in the warehouse was on.

His father was certainly working on the mech prototype that they had in the warehouse, Tony thought to himself as he went to bed.

Tony woke before his father at 5 am in the morning. He walked onto the outside balcony to welcome the morning sun.

Raising his eyes to the morning sky, as he stared upwards, a stream of fire was seen heading downwards, breaking through the highest point of the lower atmosphere.

Perhaps it was scrap parts, he thought to himself. Someone else might try to acquire it so he quickly acted.

He hurried to the side of the house to get their bright yellow, Chevy 82 pick up truck.

While driving up towards the forested area, he saw that the trail was heading towards the location of the lake.

He turned onto a left, dirt road and headed into the forested area. Parking the van at a safe location, he picked up his machete from under the seat and he headed into the forested area and towards the lake.

When he walked up towards the lake, a slender figure had just swam to the shore and pulled off their helmet. It was a woman with shoulder cut, black hair who was in a uniform.

Walking up to her, Tony asked, "are you all right?"
