Chapter 2: 17 year-old Charmaine 1
"Xiaomin! How could you!"
Charmaine Song was awakened by that scream. The next thing she knew, a loud slap landed on her face just as she was trying to get up from the bed. She was slapped so hard her head almost hit the head board. Her eyes widened at the sight of her angry sister who was looking at her with contempt. What did happen? What did she do? Why was Jienna so furious?
"How could you do this? You agreed to compete with me fair and square! How dare you use such a dirty trick just to win Leo's affection?", Jienna yelled, her tears streaming down her face.
Charmaine was dumbfounded. She had just woken up. She didn't understand what was going on. But looking past Jienna, she realized she was sleeping in someone else's room. This room... it's familiar!
With shivering fingers, she clenched her hand as she looked at herself. She then grabbed the blanket and raised it up to her shoulders. She's naked under the sheets. Her heart began shaking as she looked around. It felt as if someone had stabbed her chest when her gaze landed on the half naked man on her left. He was staring at her with furrowed brows. What does that look mean? Was it expressing disgust? Disappointment? This must be dream. A very bad dream!
"You.... Did you drug Leo so you could sleep with him? You're such a dirty sl*t!", Jienna accused her.
Charmaine turned to Jienna. "I didn't." she uttered. "It wasn't me!"
"Then why are you here?" Jienna asked her. "You clearly entered Leo's room to seduce him!" she yelled.
Shaking her head, Charmaine wrapped the white blanket around her and ran towards the shower. She locked herself inside as she tried to organize her thoughts. She slept with Leo but how did all this happen? She has no recollection of how she got into Leo's room.
Yesterday was Leo's twenty first birthday. A big celebration was held last night and she remembered chatting and drinking with some of their common friends. That was all that she could remember. Did she drink too much and entered the wrong room? She really can't recall at all.
"Leo... You know how much I like you... You promised to give me a chance to love you... What just happened?", Charmaine could hear Jienna sobbing outside. She felt bad about all this, but she really didn't plan all of this. It just happened!
Charmaine grabbed a white robe hanging on the wall. She wore it and dashed out of the bathroom and out of that bedroom. She didn't want to listen to her sisters sobs anymore. She ran through the corridors and down the stairs as if someone was chasing her. Tears started to fall from her eyes as she raced with the shadow of her sister. She was sorry. She was guilty. She was wrong.
When Charmaine reached the living room, she saw the Ji family butler and hurriedly asked for her car keys. The old man didn't ask anything else as he fetched the keys and handed it to her. He watched as the young lady rash out of the house in great haste. She was pale and frightened. He wondered if he should go report this to the old master Ji.
Charmaine ran to the garage barefooted. When she saw her car, she quickly unlocked it and hopped in. It was only when she stared at her reflection through the rearview mirror that she noticed her disheveled state. She combed her messy hair with her fingers and wiped her tears with the back of her hand. A lot of servants saw her running out of the house just now, but she didn't care anymore. She has already caused such a huge scandal. There's nothing that could change what occured.
Charmaine pulled away the driveway with her thoughts in a mess. Technically, Leo is her fiance. Old Mr. Ji and Old Mrs. Song arranged a marital engagement between two families' chosen inheritors a few decades ago. An heiress of the Songs must marry the Ji family's heir and Leo Ji, the eldest grandson was chosen. That being said, Charmaine and Leo's engagement was established the moment she was born.
Charmaine liked Leo Ji. She was very willing to marry him. She's been in love with him ever since she was little... but so was her older sister Jienna. She opposed the elders' appointment and protested nonstop saying Leo's fiance should be her as the eldest daughter of the Songs. She said it was unfair and that Charmaine's engagement should be called off.
Charmaine loved her sister very much. She didn't want to hurt her but she also didn't have the heart to give Leo up. He was her first love, her one great love; and so she made a promise to compete with her fairly, and let Leo decide and choose between the two of them. She was serious when she made that promise... but then this happened.
"I'm sorry." She mumbled as she tightened her grip on the stirring wheel. At that moment, she couldn't hold back her tears anymore and she began sobbing as she hit the high way. She stepped on the gas and sped off as if trying to vent her strong emotions. With gritted teeth and vision blurred by tears, she was unaware of how fast her car was moving.
"I'm sorry but I love Leo very much." she mumbled. If she was to choose between Leo and her sister, she would choose the man she love. She was sorry because even though she didn't intend to sleep with Leo last night and even though she only remember very little about that, she was internally glad that Leo was her first man. She gave him her virginity and that's one dream come true for her. She was sorry because deep inside her, she also claims Leo as hers. She has no intention of giving him up.
Charmaine wiped her tears which were blinding her eyes. It was just one second. One second and the next thing she knew, everything has overturned. Along with a very loud crashing sound, a strong force seemed to have hammered her chest and head. With everything up-side-down in front of her, she stared at the road ahead filled with people getting closer. Some are shouting but she couldn't comprehend anything.
"Look! I think she's badly injured! Call for an ambulance!"
"She almost hit me. What was she thinking?"
"I think she won't make it. The car was a total wreck!"
Charmaine closed her eyes as she felt a warm liquid gush out from her forehead. Did her retribution just come? But she still wants to live. She still wants to be Leo's Mrs. Ji...
