Chapter 1: 01.The cause

Mikey walked back as the rain fell over her bowed shoulders. A deep sigh left her quivering lips. Coldness entered her body as she tried to protect herself holding her arms close to her body.

"Mom will kill me."

No other way, she has to tell her. It's impossible to even think of her reaction if she lies.

Her steps became faster and hurried. But that didn't help to warm up. Cold wind blocked every step she took. The rain was getting even stronger and the sound of rain made her partially scared.

The light flickered on the corner of the street and made gloomy surroundings even gloomier but that was not as scary as what will happen at home. How can she avoid it?

As soon she opened the door to the building they lived in, warmth enveloped her shivering body and gave her some comfort. The whole building had just fie floors and they lived on the top floor. The building itself was old, without an elevator so she had to walk up and down multiple times a day.

Today it felt so heavy to go up but still, she came somehow faster than usual. Or it was just an illusion?

Her keys somehow echoed in the silent hallway and staircase making her even more anxious than before.

She didn't even put the key into the lock, the door slowly opened and two hands pulled her inside.

As the door slammed behind her she stumbled to the floor and rose her two big blue eyes towards the person who gave her birth. ''Mother...''

Alcohol stench hit her face as the woman stared at her from above and stared at her with red eyes. ''Did you bring it?''

Mikey felt pressure from her eyes but then sighed. ''Mom, they caught me and now the police will have a record of me stealing. If I do this one more time they will put me into jail. Please, don't make me do this.''

The woman over her head started chuckling. ''So what. You are anyway not worthy of anything. Your only good thing is those two eyes you have. They are just like your fathers. If you didn't have them, I would have already dumped you into one of the orphanages. Mikey, you always tell me how much you love me. Your father told you on your death bed to take care of me. Is this how you care? Bring me my booze, now...''

Mikey suddenly heard heavy thunders from outside. ''Mom. I can't go out now. Please, can't you wait until morning? I will bring it in the early morning, please.'' She was wet, tired and as it seems feverish as well.

''I can't have lazy people surrounding me. You never help me with anything. The whole day just going out and not coming home to take care of me...'' Her laments started getting stronger and they turned into yells.

''But mother, doing the daytime I go to school...'' It was not her fault for not having time. Straight after school, she would run back home and do whatever the mother told her to do.

The woman looked at her with irony written all over her face. ''What is the point of you going to school. Your grades are horrible. You always make me go to school and those teachers always look down on me. You can as well just stay at home. Why wasting time for such useless thing.''

''But without school, I can't get any normal job. How will we survive later on?'' Her eyes became cloudy as her fever started hitting her mind.

The woman could see her becoming dizzy but just stood there. ''It seems there is not worth having a child. How bothersome.'' She let Mikey on the cold floor in wet clothes sleeping not even caring if something worse might happen to her.

Mikey woke up as light hit her eyes. ''Light?''

Her mother never opened the screens trough the day as she usually slept. How did the light come in?

''Mo... ther...?'' Her raspy voice was heard by someone in white. She felt so heavy. Trough clouds sh heard muffled voices far away and she could feel straw touching her lips.

She sipped a few mouthfuls and wanted to ask more but her eyes became blurry again and she slowly fell into unconsciousness again. She could feel her body been moved but then she slipped into darkness and nothingness enveloped her.

She could feel her throat being perched. The sound could be heard near her head. Mikey slowly opened her eyes and this time she could see everything glass clear.

White walls, white sheets, buzzing next to her was the life-supporting machine... What the hell is actually going on here? Hospital?

This time it was dark in the room. With a bit of light that came from the windows, she could see three more beds in room. Someone slept there and just now her hearing became sharper and she could hear slow breathing. She planned to call the nurse to give her some water, but she felt sorry to wake up the rest of them only because of that.

From corner of her eyes, she could see glass of water and straw inside. Slowly she moved her body and realized that she was actually fine. She picked the glass and tried as noiselessly as possible to drink. But unfortunately, somehow her gulp echoed trough the room making her nervous.

That sound was so big that she was completely certain that everyone would wake up and start complaining. Should she pretend? No, better say sorry, most people accept it anyway. Most humans are like that, with kind words and smile you can open their hearts and they will forgive you. Right?

But nothing happened. No one woke up, no one yelled at her. Better not take chances. She took this time smaller sips of water and after finishing it off, she laid back down and closed her eyes. This time she fell asleep...
