Chapter 3: Chapter Two

Emily fell forwards out of the portal, landing on her hands and knees. The ground before her was soft and squishy, colored purple. Small green flowers grew all around her. Rolling onto her back, she found that she was extremely exhausted. She just wanted to go to sleep, to close her eyes and stay there forever… and ever… and ever…

No! She shouted internally, and forced herself to get up and look around. The sky above her was an emerald green, with darker green clouds lazily floating across it. Two small, dim stars were the only things that gave light, so the area was already dark, not to mention the green haze that was ever present, making it so she could only see half a mile in front of her.

She felt trapped here; she almost turned back. She went as far as the control panel, but stopped herself. She took a deep breath, and turned around. In front of her was a path, and she was 95% sure that it wasn't there before. This place was messing with her head. She pulled an apple out of the backpack, oddly it hadn't gone bad in the shelter, and ate it to help clear her head. Then, she started down the path into the green fog.

The ground was grossly squishy, making a squelching noise each time she put weight on it. It was disgusting. The path continued onward for half an hour, and Emily began to grow tired. Normally she would barely be short of breath after walking this long, but this place was different.

Weirder, stranger. But she pushed on, and soon found herself in front of a tall wall. It was red in color. There didn't seem to be a gate anywhere, and the wall seemed to extend far into the distance in both directions. Thankful she had brought the rope, she tied a rock to the end and flung it up to the top of the wall, where it wrapped around a red bar far above.

Taking a deep breath, she put her weapon through the straps in her backpack so that it was pressed against her back, and gripped the rope. Then she began to climb.

The wall was slick and smooth, and there weren't any foot holds, so Emily was practically climbing a hanging rope. The climb was long, and her hands were beginning to bleed from the chafing rope. The climb seemed to last for hours, but it probably only lasted fifteen minutes or so. By the time she reached the top, she was exhausted.

Breathing deeply as she scrambled over the wall, she collapsed onto the solid red stone, gasping for breath. I will never do that again unless I absolutely have to. She decided. Something scraped on the stone near her. In mere moments she was back on her feet, dual bladed staff in her hand, falling into a defensive stance.

In front of her stood some sort of tall creature. It was a deep purple color, almost indigo, and it's eyes glowed orange. It merely stood there, looking at her. Emily relaxed. The creature seemed harmless. It didn't even seem intelligent. She warily gathered up her rope and edged around the creature, moving along the wall towards a set of stairs that led to her destination; the ground on the inside of the wall. Her aching arms and bleeding hands wanted to put away her weapon, to have relief, but Emily gritted her teeth and continued onward down the stairs.

What lay before her was astonishing. A large city spread out before her, once sparkling white and new, now, stained a faint green color. Roads criscrossed through the city, with abandoned old cars sitting motionless on the More of that creature she saw before roamed the city. She saw no people. Where are the- her thoughts cut off.

Wait. Could these creatures be… the Builders? The more she thought about it, the more it made sense. A mysterious race of people disappearing into a different dimension. A strange environment, strange air, strange food. Lack of contact with the outside world. Nobody anywhere, except these creatures. It all made sense!

She had to find some way to change them back to the way they were before. She wondered if there was a place that she could use to build this thing. Maybe she'll call it a Transmogrifier.

She began to explore the city closely examining each building. Most of them seemed to be labs or office buildings, and a few were tall apartment complexes. But none of these had the materials she Ugh, she thought. This is gonna be more difficult than I thought.

She searched for hours before finally coming across a large building marked as Advanced Mechanical Manufacturing Building A. The building right next to it was marked the same, except it was Building B. It was empty, however, so Emily's only choice was Building A. She opened the door, which was unlocked, surprisingly, and went inside. The building was completely deserted. What she found instead was a humongous room, filled with all kinds of machine parts, tools, finished machines and unfinished machines. To a normal person, this might be a boring place for geeks and nerds. But to her, this was paradise.

She wandered over to the large bay doors and opened them, letting in the sunlight. She dumped her backpack and weapon against a wall and began to work. Her hands worked with precision and with care, fitting together parts and hooking them up to computers. She worked all day and all night, or at least, what she thought passed for night in this world. The creatures gathered outside the building to watch, as if they knew what she was doing. On the third day, she realized she was hungry and pulled out an apple to munch on as she worked. On the fifth day, some creatures actually brought her the parts she needed so she didn't have to get up, proving, at least to her, that they used to be the builders.

The Transmogrifier took her an entire month to build. It would have taken longer if the Builders hadn't brought her the parts. The machine wasn't too big, It had a platform that the creatures would stand on. She would pull a lever and press a button, and they would be changed back to what they were before. Praying it would work, she led the closest creature to the platform and left it there, standing back by the control panel and taking a deep breath. Please please please… she thought, and activated the machine. There was a flash of bright light, a bang, and Emily was momentarily blinded. As her vision cleared, she stared up at the platform, at the figure standing there.
