Chapter 9: Nothing

'No, no, no!' she thought frantically as she pointed at the scouts. "Scouts, with me! Nalla, you're in charge of leading everyone else back home. Hopefully we will return soon. With Ethan."

"But-"

"That's an order! Ethan gave me command if he was ever-" she stopped, thinking of a word. "-indisposed. Now go!"

"Fine." Nalla gave the order and all of the army except the scouts began hiking back to the stronghold.

"Scouts, this is the plan." The remaining people gathered close, worry showing on their faces. "We are going to sneak up the castle. Hopefully Shadow thinks we've all retreated. Once we get there, I am going to distract Shadow while you all find Ethan and get him out. Once you have, I want one of you to set off one of those bombs, and I will hopefully find my way out of there. Once the bomb is exploded, you will take Ethan and RUN. As fast as you can. Don't wait for me, don't let Ethan out of your sight. Do what you have to to keep him with you, understand?"

The scouts nodded their understanding, "Then let's move out." Emily led them forward, weapon returned to her back, and continued to the fortress. She didn't realize that the weapon that was supposed to kill Shadow was hundreds of scattered pieces on the ground.

… … … …

They reached the fortress quickly. It was pure black, with a large entrance. "Ready?" she whispered. The scouts nodded and snuck inside, Emily following. Shadow, the big shadowy mass that he was, was seated on a large black throne. He was oddly human shaped, but he appeared to be sleeping. A voice called out to her from the side.

"Emily, no! It's a trap!" It was Ethan. Emily whirled around. He had been stripped of his armor, so he was only wearing his black pants and white shirt. He was restrained by two zombies, but they weren't just any zombies, they had swords. And were huge. Ethan couldn't get free. A trap it was. Emily berated herself for being so idiotic as Shadow stirred.

"Ah, you're here." His voice was deep and threatening, and he looked at her as he spoke. His eyes glowed red as well. The scouts bolted. 'Cowards,' Emily thought bitterly. Somehow, her armor and weapon was removed, disappearing into thin air. "You were fools for coming here. Now you must pay." He waved one of his shadowy tendrils towards Ethan and everything seemed to slow down.

One of the zombies plunged their sword through Ethan's back, and it came out his chest. The zombie pulled his sword out and Ethan slowly, ever so slowly, fell to the ground, his body unmoving. "NOOOOO!" screamed Emily as she was picked up by one of Shadow's inky tendrils.

"Pathetic," he snarled, and threw her out of the fortress. The huge doors slammed shut behind her, but Emily didn't stop. She banged on the door, sobbing. They didn't budge. She didn't budge, either. She just continued to bang, to no avail. She was about to stay there all night, banging on that stupid door. Not Ethan. Why did he take Ethan from her?

"Emily," said a voice behind her. Nalla. Gentle arms pulled her away from the doors, folding her into their embrace.

"He's- he's gone.." Emily sobbed into her friends chest. "They- they took h- him from m- me."

"I know," Nalla said soothingly. "Shh, it's ok." Emily sobbed into her embrace for what seemed like forever. "Come. We must go home." Emily was still crying as Nalla led her away.

"No, bring me b- back," protested Emily. "I wanna g- go back."

"Shh," was all Nalla said as she continued to lead her away. Away from Ethan. Away from the things that had killed him. The rest of the walk back was a blur, just a blur of tears and sadness for Emily. She was nothing. She would waste away into nothingness. Nothing… nothing… nothing…

Without realizing it, Emily was led back into the other dimension and back into the city. She was led into her bedroom and put to bed where she curled up, mashing her face into the pillow. She soon fell asleep.

.......

Darkness. Darkness everywhere. Everything was black. There was nothing. Ethan opened his eyes and looked around, completely astonished. He should be dead. But here he was, slumped against a wall, a white bandage around his bare chest. Where was- "Emily!" He said aloud, then slapped his hand over his mouth, cursing. He was in the fortress of Shadow, maybe-

"Ah, our sleeping beauty is finally awake." Shadow spoke from his black throne.

"How- how long-"

"Almost a month." Shadow snickered. 'I was asleep for a whole month?'

"What happened to Emily?" Ethan spoke bravely; Shadow obviously needed him alive, or, well, he'd be dead.

"Oh she's fine. Moping and crying around your city, I assume." Emily. How had she handled his "death"? He missed her already.

"What do you want with me?" He asked Shadow angrily.

"Not much. You're just going to build me an entire arsenal of advanced weapons for my undead army
