Chapter 4: Chapter Four

I shook my head from the past and looked across the jungle. It would be daylight soon. I saw movement in the forest but did not react since it was just a rodent. I could see in the dark about as well as a normal person during the day. I looked around at the others and watched the rodent. I thought that it might be a chinchilla but I wasn't sure. It started to get light and I stretched waiting for the command from Togima that we would be going. I waited looking for the enemy but, I knew that a daylight attack would be highly unlikely. I paused as I heard Togima give the command to leave. I didn't move as I had caught an unfamiliar scent. I looked around not seeing anything but then the scent was gone.

Togima looked at me and said "Come on hurry up or we will leave you" I nodded "Sorry"

I hurried over to him where he was standing on the edge of the trench. I jumped up and out of the trench which got a few looks from the others. I shrugged. Togima raised an eyebrow.

"since when have you been able to do that" I shrugged "Awhile I guess" Togima frowned "huh, well that is new to me." I

nodded "I am a fairly new person to you. So expect the unexpected from me." Togima huffed "Sure, sure."

I shrugged and walked. I had the feeling that we were being watched. I frowned thinking then I asked Togima softly "Do you feel like we are being watched?" Togima looked at me and shook his head "No, it must be paranoia. Most people new to war feel like they are always being watched." I twitched my fingers and shrugged continuing to walk.

I walked. I knew we were being watched. Someone had to be watching us. Perhaps a sniper with a long range scope or a scout. Either way someone was watching us as we left our post. When I spotted the gate up ahead the feeling of being watched vanished. We entered the gate and I looked around at the soldiers who were heading out. To me most of them looked experienced. I nodded to them before following the others. I walked behind them as they headed for the tent. I followed them looking around at the base as people got up and started working.

I walked into the tent and unbuckled my US Army 15" fixed blade from my belt and set it by my pillow. I then hung the anderson from the bunk by the strap on it. I then jumped up on the bed and put my ruger by my blade by my pillow on the bunk bed. I lay down and sighed thinking about who could have been watching them as they head back to the base. I frowned thinking about it. Suddenly I heard a gunshot then a few more. I saw the others all jump at the gunshots. I knew the shots were not the enemy because the gunshots came from the opposite direction then from the front where they would attack.

I calmly lay there as the others gripped their guns. I then heard someone walk into the tent and I looked to the man. I listened as he said there was going to be shooting practice today. I watched as he left then turned back to the others who had relaxed and yawned. They all seemed tired from the guard duty. I sighed before I looked to buck who had spoken.

"Damn You really must have nerves of steel. Everyone except for you jumped at those gunshots." I shrugged "I guess but even still it is good to be alert." Buck nodded "That's true. Well let's get some rest."

I watched as he jumped on his bunk and lay there. I watched as the others all lay down and started to try and get some rest. I sat up watching the others as they quieted down and soon I could hear their soft steady breathing and the snores from them as they slept. I sat cross legged on the top bunk bed thinking about this morning. I sighed jumping down off my bed to go watch the men who were shooting their guns. I grabbed my Ruger and strapped it to my belt. I then walked out of the tent and headed for the sounds of the guns. I walked soon seeing the men shooting their guns. I stopped some distance behind them and watched. I noticed a man that would walk up and down the line of men who were shooting. I watched curiously to see who had the best shot.

I watched for a while before I identified the person who had the best shot. I watched him as he carefully chose his target then fired. I sighed starting to walk away when I heard the growl of a dog. I looked to the guy I had met yesterday with his dog and I dipped my head to him.

I said "Hello" The guy looked at me "What are you doing?" I sighed "watching the others shoot" The guy huffed "you should join them. It's open for anyone to shoot not just certain teams." I nodded "well maybe later. Oh I never introduced myself; I'm Kanami" I held out my hand. The guy looked at it for a moment before he spoke "I'm called Francis." I nodded "well, it's nice to meet you." Francis shrugged "I guess" I shrugged at this "well, I guess I will see you around." He nodded "yeah, I guess."

I walked off with a sigh as I headed for the tent where I was staying. I soon reached the tent and walked in. I jumped up on the bed and lay down. I closed my eyes to rest. Unlike most people I only needed two hours of sleep. But even then it

was fragmented since I woke up at the slightest sound. I lay there soon falling asleep. Every now and then I would wake to the sounds of gunshots or someone walking by the tent.

I woke up as I heard Togima enter the tent and call out "Get up! Time to get some shooting practice in." I jumped off my bunk bed and strapped my two hand guns onto my belt after I had grabbed them from where I had set them. I then strapped my knife on the back of my belt then grabbed the Anderson gun they had given me.

Togima looked towards me then the others seeing I was the only one to already be ready to go. I walked up next to Togima and watched as the other quickly got ready to go. I waited and soon the others started to join us by the entrance. I walked out of the tent and waited; soon seeing the others file out of the tent. Togima led them towards the shooting range. I walked following him as we walked. I could see the others already sweating.

I walked calmly. It was about noon. It was the hottest part of the day and it was humid so everyone was sweating. I sighed. I was barely sweating compared to the others and I was sure I was the only one that was not affected by the heat. I saw the shooting range and calmly walked with the others. Togima told us to line up with some space between all of us. I walked to the edge and stood. Charles stood next to me and smiled at me. I nodded back to him before looking out at the targets. The targets were new.

I listened as Togima explained that we would take turns shooting at the six targets. We would all get six bullets to shoot the six targets. If we missed we would have to run around the entire base two laps. I nodded as he finished.

I frowned as he said I would be first. I nodded and took a deep breath before I lifted the anderson, took it off safety and took aim at the targets. I felt like time was slowing and I fired the gun in my hands. I fired six times each bullet I saw hit the intended target strait in the center of them. I then felt time seem to speed up again and I lowered my gun. I put the gun back on safety.

Togima frowned "are you done? You only fired once." I nodded "I am done. And I did fire six bullets. You can go look at the targets if you want." Togima huffed "Very well."

I watched as he stalked over to the targets. I watched as he slowly went to each target then walked back. He had a surprised look on his face as he walked up to me.

"Now how in the hell did you manage to shoot all six targets straight in the center of them while we all only heard one gunshot?" I shrugged "Not sure how I do it myself." I answered half honestly. Togima sighed "well, ok then. Charles your next." Togima walked behind the line.

I stood and watched as charles shot the targets. I watched as all the others shot. Only one person had been unable to shoot one of the targets. It was back to me to shoot and Togima had the targets start to move. I nodded. The targets were now moving targets to shoot.

I lifted my gun again and took it off safety before I took a deep breath and aimed. I felt time slow once again. I fired the gun shooting each target once again strait in the middle. I did shoot the bullets just a little to the left of the original bullet hole however so they could be seen. I put my gun on safety once again before I lowered it, time speeding up again. I looked to Togima who sighed.

Togima then spoke "Well, since you obviously don't need practice go run laps around the base." I nodded "Yes, Sir."

I pulled the strap of the Anderson over my head and started to run. I calmly paced myself as I ran. I easily ran two laps barely breaking out in a sweat. The only reason I was sweating was due to the fact that it was so humid and hot out. I kept an even pace and even breath as I ran.

I ran till Togima called me over. I jogged over a line of sweat dripping down the side of my face. I had been running for at least an hour or so. I saw the others were ready to go back to the tent to sleep. I nodded stopping next to Charles. Togima nodded before walking off to the tents. I followed wiping the sweat off my face. I soon caught my breath and walked calmly.

Charles was sweating profusely from the work and heat. I walked as we soon reached the tent. I looked over to Togima who was walking away. I shrugged before walking into the tent and jumped up onto my bed. Jamie looked at me before she lay on her bed

"How did you do that shooting?" I shrugged "I just took aim and fired" Jamie spluttered "what?! Yeah, right what is your trick!" I shrugged "really that's all I did. I took aim and fired like the rest of you did" Jamie sat up "no way. Your gunshots sounded like one gunshot. There was no distinction between the shots you fired. It was like you only pulled the trigger once. No normal human could do that without some kind of trick so spill it" I shrugged "there is no trick at least for me. Every time I pick up a gun and aim time just seems to slow and I fire" Jamie's jaw dropped "impossible" I shrugged "not really and I figured it was normal for everyone till I went shooting with a friend and learned not everyone can shoot like me"

I watched as she shook her head then lay down not really saying anything after that. I shrugged and lay on my bed thinking and listening out for danger. I looked over at the others watching them without their notice. I watched listening as their chatter slowly stopped as they fell asleep. I sighed sitting up as they all fell asleep. I slid off my bed and onto the floor with barely a sound as I went to the tent door and exited. I had something I needed to check out tonight. I easily slid out of the tent and into the night air. I listened as I heard the sounds of the night guards as they patrolled the base. I crept into the shadows and silently slid from shadow to shadow headed for the fence that surrounded the camp. I paused as I reached the fence and waited for one of the guards to pass. Once the guard passed I easily jumped over the fence despite it being seven foot tall. I made a small amount of noise as I landed on the other side of the fence. I quickly headed into the trees making little to no noise.

I reached the nearest tree and jumped into it landing on a branch that was six feet off of the ground. I then jumped lightly to another branch a little higher than the first and did the same for the next two branches as I started to head for the area where we had guarded the camp last night. I knew that someone had been watching us as we left the area. Either someone; the enemy was watching or some predator looking for an easy meal. But I knew it had to be the enemy since no predator would have tried stalking our group or even watched. Animals now avoided me as much as possible since that incident.
