Elodie checked the phone again, just to be safe. She felt a little bad about taking some random person's phone from the closet back there, but Tarik had said that the person wasn't probably alive to pick it back up.

"Besides, it's not like you're going through their info," he had shrugged. "You just need a way to keep track of time and call your family, right?"

Even after all these years, it was still hard to say no to Tarik. She remembered the first time they met, when they were grouped together for a project in class.

Back then, Tarik had a reputation as a bit of a bad boy. He had some unsavory rumors about gang connections, but nothing about womanizing. In fact, there was a very, very quiet rumor about Tarik being gay, due to how uninterested he seemed to be in women.
