Chapter 10: Act 3-1 Green Hills
Tails is seen sitting against a metal wall. He looks around only to realize that he is inside a capsule of sorts, with two small dead birds by his side. Robotnik is seen clicking away in a large computer. He's arguing with Tails:
Robotnik: "It took me three months to build a facility that would take mankind more than a year. If that doesn't put me above them, what will?"
Tails: "Well you did have the help of an army of superpowerful echidnas at your disposal, as well as a source of infinite energy."
Robotnik: "Energy that no one else would be able to use, let alone have access to. Those stupid anteaters made a legend about needing someone with a pure heart to use the emerald's power. They didn't even dare try to force it out."
Tails: "Maybe because that would ruin the balance of it? Come on Robotnik, why would you need me here if you didn't believe in the legend. Am I bait for when Sonic comes?"
Robotnik: "That nosy blue rodent is dead!"
Tails: "Sonic wouldn't die like that."
Robotnik turns around to face Tails.
Robotnik: "And yet he did. You didn't think I would check? My radar could no longer sense him not long after I exploded him to water. He's dead."
Tails stays silent for a moment, before asking once more.
Tails: "Then why do you need me?"
Robotnik: "Two reasons. First one, I'm a sucker for debunking false myths. When I was a kid I proved to a cathecism that god isn't real. They expelled me shortly afterwards, but the crying children was a nice treat. If the Emeralds don't react to you, then the myth is false, and I can prove that there is no such thing as a pure heart."
Tails: "And second?"
Robotnik: "You're here for backup. I hate to admit it but a single spike of that wretched hedgehog was enough to boost my tech a couple decades. If I have an entire creature who can regrow these, then I'm invincible."
Tails: "But you have..."
Robotnik imitates him in a girly voice:
Robotnik: "But you have the chaos emeralds!", He then switches back to his usual grumpy voice. "You don't think I know? After analysing their components I fear they have some sort of repelling power that only activates when the chaos energy is depleted. It would explain why they were so far apart. I guess some sort of defense mechanism made from their maker, so they weren't abused. I suppose they weren't expecting me to be the abuser. And once I get all the power out, I'll be able to take control of Earth, no, all of the zones. Ah ah ah!"
Tails: "Sonic will stop you."
Robotnik: "Do I really need to repeat myself?"
Tails: "Someone will stop you."
Robotnik: "Bahh. Let them try. I've had echidnas, the local wildlife and even a pink hedgehog trying to get in, and none of them succeded. Even if Sonic was alive, he would never be able to stop me."
Meanwhile in Green Hills.
Sonic is seen running around in the attic, since he was always more comfortable when running. Knuckles enters the attic and asks:
Knuckles: "Are you going to give up?"
Sonic stops.
Sonic: "So you're a pep talker now, huh?", Knuckles seems confused. "Look, I'm scared okay?"
Knuckles: "Robotnik has a lot of robots at his disposal but..."
Sonic: "Not about that. I'm willing to kick Eggman's butt any day of the week. I just... I just don't want to scarifice my life here. I only recently got my bearings here. Tom offered me a home, and I've been garnering fans all over the world. Although they tend to prefer my classic side more than my modern approach. Every time I try to innovate they only complain."
Knuckles: "So you're not willing to make the sacrifice?"
Sonic: "I don't know."
Knuckles: "Don't make the same mistake I did. I chose my land over my people, and I ended up losing the first and being a bad leader for the second. Make the right choice."
Knuckles left the attic as Sonic only grunted.
Sonic: "So he means I should choose Tails over Earth? I just met him two days ago. Sure we hit it off, and became friends... good friends even... But I have a lot of friends, I have Donut Lord, Pretzel Lady, their kid, even Crazy Carl. That's a lot, right? And they all care for me, even if they don't understand what it's like to be an alien among humans... Only Tails did... Ahh!"
Sonic kicks a box of comics, as several of them fly off. He catches all of them and puts them in place, before realizing what was among them. The letter Tails had brought him when he came. The letter written by LongClaw. Sonic didn't want to be reminded of what happened. When she left him to walk the zones alone, to forever be away from everyone. He didn't want to admit it to himself, but he resented her, still he opened the letter. His curiosity was too much. He began reading it:
LongClaw: "To my dear Son... Sonic,
After I got you to escape, I was able to survive the echidnas attack, but am too injured to do it for long. I'm writing this as a last meassge, and I hope it reaches you somehow.
I know how hard it must be to be always on the run, and I can only imagine the dangers you've been through, but most of all, the loneliness. I'm sorry Sonic, I truly am. I did it with your survival in mind, but why survive when you do not live? I can only hope you found someone. Someone you could rely on, someone like me when I found you. There are nice beings in the world, they will not all hunt you down. And who knows, maybe you've found someone like you, who's been chased all his life as well. I hope so, and if you did, I just want you to know to never let them go, because those are the most precious of friends. Those are the ones who are worth spending every moment with. Sonic, I taught you to run, when maybe I should've taught you to fight. Fight for your survival, for your dreams, for your friends.
Love, LongClaw."
Sonic starts crying, but quickly wipes the tears off and looks at the exit of the attic with determination. He runs towards the kitchen where everyone still was, and tells them.
Sonic: "I'm going to go save Tails."
Tom and his family all smile at him, even Knuckles chuckles.
Tom: "Hey, even Knuckles chuckled."
Knuckles: "You must have seen wrong. Unlike Sonic, I don't chuckle."
Sonic: "I hope you know what this means.", Sonic seems sad again as he talks to Tom and his family. "I only have one ring left so... Thank you. Thank you for taking me in your family. I didn't deserve it, and yet you were so nice. I..."
Tom: "What are you talking about? I'm going too.", Sonic is shocked.
Sonic: "What? But you'll be stuck there. You can't abandon your family."
Tom: "Oh come on, you're Sonic, the impossible super fast blue hedgehog. You'll find a way back, plus it's not like Miles was only your friend. He was mine too."
Sonic: "But..."
Tom: "It's not up for discussion. I heard you guys need some help, and I'm willing to give it. Knuckles told us that the only entrance is from the top."
Knuckles: "Exactly. If we had the flying yellow fox, this could be a lot easier."
Tom: "Don't worry, I've got a solution to your problem. Go enter the car, there's something I want to show you."
Sonic and Knuckles head towards the car.
Sonic: "Race you to the door."
Knuckles: "What?", Sonic immediatelly dashes reaching the door in an instant.
Sonic: "You lose."
Knuckles grunts.
Tom stays behind as he kisses his wife and daughter, hugging them.
Tom: "I love you both so much."
Wife: "We know. We love you too. Try to stay safe."
Daughter: "And beat that evil doctor's ass!"
Tom: "We will. I'm sure of it."
Tom goes to the car and enters the driving seat. Sonic is curious.
Sonic: "So what is this surprise you have?"
Tom: "It's something me and Crazy Carl have been working on for a while. We were going to show you after the Sonic Fan's Meeting, but then everything happened and the chance was lost. Hopefully he already put the fuel in it."
Sonic: "Fuel?"
We cut to them reaching Crazy Carl's farm. Tom meets up with him.
Tom: "So, is it ready?"
Carl: "Of course. Lock and loaded. You're going to give it a try?"
Tom: "A lot more than that, actually. We are going to...", Carl interrupts him.
Carl: "Is that a red creature? How many more are there?" He approaches Knuckles who only grunts at Carl's curiosity.
Sonic runs ahead and opens the doors to the shack. The sunlight lights it up, as we see Sonic shine in excitement.
Sonic: "There's no way!"
Carl: "Oh, you're already there? Well then, I present to you, The Tornado!"
A small plane is shown with red colour and some classic designs on the sides. It spells Sonic's Tornado on the sides.
Sonic: "You were going to give this to me?"
Tom: "Well, not really to you, we just thought you would enjoy having the sensation of flight. Carl had this plane in the worst shape I've ever seen a plane in, so we just had to restore it. Now, I can fly you anywhere."
Sonic: "Wait, Donut Lord, you can fly planes?"
Tom: "I took a license when I was younger. I'm a bit out of practice, but it shouldn't be too hard."
Knuckles jumps on top of the plane, and sits on one of the wings. The others look at him, as he seems impatient.
Knuckles: " What are you waiting for? Let's go."
Tom, Sonic and Carl move the plane towards the small flying pad.
Ton puts on an helmet and sits on the pilot seat, as Sonic sits on the other wing.
Tom: "You know, there's enough seats for the both of you."
Sonic & Knuckles in unison: "I know."
Tom: "Alright, suit yourselves."
Carl: "Are you sure you don't need extra help. You know, I am great at setting up traps."
Tom: "Thanks buddy, maybe next time."
Carl: "I don't think there's enough track to take off. You might need help with that."
Sonic: "We'll get speed while we're falling. We just need to put the ring at an high spot."
Carl: "You're crazy."
Tom: "I was actually thinking of the same thing."
Carl: "And then I'm the crazy one. Fine you guys go on ahead."
The Tornado starts moving as they head across the small street to gain speed.
Tom: "Ready, Sonic?"
Sonic: "It's a little late to ask that.", He grabs the ring and says. "Sky above Mobius."
And they head for the last stop of their adventure.
