Chapter 1: The Nth Rejection

The clothes were piled on a corner of the bed, the pillows laid messily all over the bed and the same for the school things—such as notebooks and loose papers. Sitting on the place where she would sleep on the bed, Mavis looked through the window and smiled. Outside, the weather looked sunny despite the season being autumn. What a bright day, she thought. But soon, she frowned. It was a school day and it was also the day she had to present her social science presentation. She hated doing oral presentations, or it was more like, she never liked to socialize and talk. Not because she didn't like to interact with people, she would love to, but she was never good at interacting. Her social skills were not the best; she didn't talk much with people, it was only because she had no idea what to say to keep the conversation going on.

Thinking more about the presentation, Mavis shuddered with disgust and nervousness. She continued to look through the window and smiled bitterly; at least the weather was nice.

Have you ever experienced the weather's betrayal? You would look at the weather outside and think that it looked sunny because it was bright and the sun could be seen, but it proved you otherwise the moment you walked out. The reality was always cruel, but what was also cruel was the weather. The moment she walked outside, her whole body immediately shivered from the unbelievable cold weather that could make the season be mistaken as winter. Her heart broke into pieces. She felt so betrayed and wronged by the weather.

'I trusted you, weather. How could you do this to me? Is this how you treat me? Okay. Cool. I see how it is.'

Mavis cursed the weather in her mind but wore a small smile on her face while she was on her way to school by taking the bus.

The bus she took was almost full as usual, she internally sighed; she didn't want to stand since it was a hassle to do so. Her condition was not good, she got easily tired and standing for some time would make her want to sit down as fast as possible and rest her legs. Fortunately, there was still an empty seat left. After she sat down, she ignored her surroundings and quietly listened to music with her earphones. The man sitting beside gave her a meaningful gaze. He wore a black suit with a black tie, his dark hair was styled in a blow-dried wavy haircut and his grey eyes were sharp looking.

Looking at the familiar young girl beside him, he was surprised. To think that he saw her again; it seemed like the brat taking his car without permission and giving him a bus ticket turned out to give him such a surprise—Not bad. He was originally angry about having to take the bus but now that he got to meet that person again, his anger subdued.

She was listening to music with both of her earbuds on, so he didn't know what to do. It wasn't like he could start a conversation all of sudden, adding with the fact that they were practically strangers. While the man was trying to think of ways to interact with her, the girl took off one of her earbuds and looked at him.

She smiled. "Seeing how you look at me like that, are you perhaps thinking of a plan to kill me? May I ask, when will you make your move?"

For her to smile so sincerely while talking about her own death to a stranger, he was caught off guard. He let out a chuckle and lightly shook his head.

"You are joking, I am a gentleman."

"Then you won't let me die by your hands?"

Her eyes were bright and clear but there was a hint of sadness, the man was surprised but didn't show it. He narrowed his eyes and answered her seriously.

"No."

At his rejection, her eyes dropped slightly and she sighed. "What a pity."

The man asked her, "Why? Still young, yet you think about getting yourself killed. That's a bit odd, don't you think?"

"Perhaps," was all she said.

"Life is short," he lightly spoke, "you should treasure it."

The bus had stopped; she got up from the seat and faced him with a smile.

"If life is short then what's the point of living?"

She didn't bother to see his reaction and got off the bus before the bus driver closed the doors and started to drive again.

Watching her back getting out of his sight as the bus moved, the man took out his smartphone from his pocket and sent a message.

[Eastview College. Female. Brown long hair. Amber eyes. A mole under the right eye. Find out her identity.]

It didn't even take ten seconds before he received a message.

[Got it.]

To take a bus this early and get off at a bus stop where most students would do the same, and assuming her age, the man could guess that she was a student at a college nearby. The closest one was Eastview College. There was a small chance that he had picked the wrong college, but recollecting the direction she walked to was where the college was located; he was more or less certain he picked the right one.

At the same time, Mavis was walking to her college while inwardly suffering from anxiety. She had hoped to die before she could reach the classroom where she would hold her presentation. When she noticed that a man was looking at her in a daze, she had thought he was planning to kill her and so she decided to ask him to kill her; but alas, she got turned down. This rejection—it would make her nth time. Was it really that hard to get killed by someone?

'God, if you grant me the opportunity to get into an accident before I reach school just this time, I will be very thankful. Please, please, please...'

Mavis silently prayed, she really didn't want to do her presentation. She was chickening out and wanted a reason to not be able to attend her classes. But nothing happened and she gave up. Planning to buy some comfort snacks before her first class, she entered a small store. The next thing that happened, however, almost made her believe in the existence of God.

At a corner, she saw a man with a robber mask enter the store. His hands were inside the pockets of his black hoodie. Mavis rubbed her chin as she watched the robber walking towards the cashier. When the cashier took notice of him, he widened his eyes in shock. The robber immediately took out his right hand from his pocket that held a gun. Seeing the gun, the cashier quickly put his hands up in fright and moved backwards.

The robber fired the gun at the ceiling, but no panic voices could be heard since—besides the robber himself—there were only the cashier and Mavis in the store.

The robber shouted, "Don't make a noise and if you fucking call the police, I'll shoot you!"

The cashier listened to the robber; he was terrified and didn't want to die. Meanwhile, Mavis was lost in her fantasy.

'[Today's news, a man robbed a store and shot a female student dead.] That doesn't sound bad...'

It was only when the robber fired the gun the second time that Mavis came back to her senses. She didn't know how long it was since the robber entered the store, but she saw that he was already urging the cashier to put all the money in the bag he had brought with him.

It was not good, she thought. She had to make her move before it was over. With that thought, she hastily walked up to the robber and gave him a poke on his arm. The robber jumped in fright and immediately turned around to see a young girl. He was close to firing his gun at her but luckily, he didn't.

The robber secretly let out a relieved sigh, and then he yelled at her, "Do you want to fucking die?! I will shoot you!"

He thought he had successfully scared her, but he saw her smiling brightly. He had literally no idea what was happening at the moment.

"Go ahead!" the girl said.

Gritting his teeth, the robber yelled at her again, "You crazy bitch!"

Mavis didn't mind and began to move closer to the robber. If she moved, she would die; wasn't that just perfect for her?

The robber ignored her and urged the cashier to be quicker. Mavis frowned, he was supposed to shoot her the moment she moved. When the cashier finished, the robber didn't waste time to get out of the place before the police arrived. However, how could Mavis let him leave like this?

She grabbed his arm to prevent him from leaving the store. The robber cursed and tried to break away from her.

"Fucking bitch, let go of me! What the fuck is your problem? I will really kill you!"

"Then kill me!"

The robber grunted, he harshly shoved the girl to the ground and left without looking back; kill her? He had never killed someone before! He only robbed the store to pay off his gambling debt. Who could have known he had bad luck and met some mentally ill girl while robbing the store.
