Chapter 3: Rapid Walks

Mattiah looked at the boy as he took his spot next to him. It was not crowded meaning there were many other seats but he chose to sit next to him. Mattiah looked over at him and tilted his head. His own eyes were met by the blue and brown pair next to him. The boy smiled at him and waved slightly "Hi! We met before right?"

Mattiah raised an eyebrow as he looked at him. He rolled his eyes and looked forward. The boy leaned forward, his face now blocking Mattiah's view of the passing destinations in front of him. "Hello?" Mattiah sat back and looked at the boy next to him as he settled down as well.

"What?" Mattiah said with a hasty tone and the boy just smiled again.

"Hi! I was just asking if we met before."

Mattiah rolled his eyes once again and sighed.

"You know we did, why are you asking stupid questions?" The boy's smile slowing faded and he sat back. The curly headed boy bit his lip and looked forward, the rest of the bus ride silent.

They arrived at the bus stop near the school and Mattiah stood up. He grabbed his bag and looked at the boy. He didn't seem to be moving. He stayed seated on the seat. Mattiah didn't want to ask any questions, so he didn't. He just walked off the bus and watched as it drove off. He shook his head and walked on towards the school.

'Maybe he doesn't go to this school,' He thought as he walked along the street.

Once he arrived in front of the school, he pulled out his phone to look at his schedule again. He walked through the double doors and looked around. The hallways were crowded with groups of chattering girls and boys who were acting like they haven't seen each other in years. He shook his head and continued to look down as he walked the noisy hallways.

As he walked, looking for the cafeteria, a girl bumped into him. He looked at her and bowed slightly "Sorry." She smiled at him and dipped.

"You don't have to bow to me. I'm not royalty." She chuckled a bit and he nodded in return. She started to walk with him. "You must be new, you're a junior right?" He nodded, not looking at her. She nodded and stepped in front of him, causing his to stop and look up from his phone. He was met by a pearly white smile hosted by a perfectly blonde clear skinned girl.

"Hi! I'm Lyfe Miller. It's life but spelt like L-Y-F-E." She smiled and Mattiah nodded. "And you are?" Mattiah sighed eternally and shifted his weight to one leg, one hand holding the strap of his back back.

"Mattiah Lee. Aren't we supposed to somewhere?" She nodded and took his hand to lead him somewhere. Mattiah scrunched up his eyebrows and just followed her. They arrived in front of a crowded area that had tables and noisy pupils spilled all around. She smiled up at him as she spoke "This is the cafeteria, you can sit with me and my friends!" He looked down and gave a phony smile as she continued to pull him along.

Lyfe eventually let go of his hand while her and her friends were talking and laughing loudly around him. He looked around the cafeteria just to do a double take as the boy from the bus walked in. He quickly raised his hand to the blabbering girls and gave a quick smile. "Guys, I would love to stay," he paused and cringed at his words,"but I see my friend. I have to go. Thank you for letting me sit here." He pushed up his bag on his back and stood up. Lyfe took his hand and pulled him down a bit.

"Wait, let me give you my number." Mattiah looked over at the boy again and nodded.

"Later." He patted her back and stood up starting to walk off. He quickly walked over to the boy and put his arm around his shoulder with a blank expression on his face. The boy looked up and looked back down, continuing to read his book.

"What?" Mattiah looked down at his book and then back at him.

"Whatcha reading?"

"A book." The boy answered roughly and continued to read. Mattiah sighed and stood up straight. He took the book out of his hands and looked straight at him. "What now?"

"What's your name?"

"Why do you want to know?"

"So I don't have to call you the boy from the bus." The boy was the one to rolled his eyes this time.

"You're very rude. I hope you know that."

"Thanks?"

"My name's Amir Namso. And you are?"

"Mattiah Lee." He gave his book back and leaned against the wall. "So what's the deal with this school? Why is everyone so cheery?" Amir looked up and laughed loudly. The cafeteria turned silent and everyone turned to looked at the two. Mattiah raised an eyebrow at the crowd as everyone continued with their conversation. Amir looked at Mariah and smiled.

"Not everyone is like that. I don't know who you met but you must be lucky to have met them."

"You?" Amir looked up, a hint of blush on his face. "And this girl named Lyfe I think."

"Lyfe Miller. Of course. She has put this stupid nice act on every year since fourth grade. She draws in the new kids and then add them to her posé later. She's actually horrible." Mattiah nodded and looked at her.

"She doesn't seem too bad."

"Oh yeah. Sure." Amir went back to his book after that.
