Chapter 22: Faith In the Light

Julius stood there surrounded by the almost constricting crowd that was his family. He stared at the worried faces that surrounded him as he bit the inside of his cheek before letting out a breath. "The Xeres family...has just been taken out by hunters" Julius spoke softly as he slowly began to make his way through the crowd and to the stairs. "I will be alone in my office today. Please do not disturb me. And see to it that our guests are taken care of."

As he said those words Beau opened her mouth to say something before stopping as Julius slowly walked up the stairs and to his office where he sat down in his chair sitting there in the dark silence. A long eerie silence as he quietly let his thoughts consume him. Why was he so careless about the entire situation? Thinking and believing he had the entire premise under control until it led up to the point he didn't.

Mathias showing up was just the icing on the cake, that led to the fall of the Xeres. Yet he remained alive, and kicking. Why? He deserved what ever injuries he had gotten during the fight, he even deserved more than that.

Letting out a tired breath Julius looked around his office silently. The office that used to be his mother's. And somehow came down to him. He had been the head of the family for short of twenty years. And in those twenty years. He realized more and more how ready he wasn't for such a position. Where as any of the others his age, they would have no issue with leading or making decisions for the family. Julius put sometimes too much thought into it. Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worst.

Julius' thoughts were interrupted when the door to his office slowly opened as his mother walked through the door looking at him. Not with a cold and furious look, but with a worried look. One that she rarely gets around him.

"What do you want mother?" Julius asked as he pushed even more of the silence out of the room. She was never known to attempt to comfort anyone. He knew her well enough for that.

"Is it wrong for me to want to talk to you about your attack?" She asked simply as she walked closer to her desk before sitting upon it. She was dressed in her usual white nightgown with her burgundy hair loose and down to the curve of her back. She had the same grace from when she had first turned him into a vampire. Something he never wanted to be, but he accepted the chance he was given.

"Mathias is still alive surprisingly and no I did not put a blade into his heart. He still walks in the daylight and still attacking vampires in the dead of night. As if he wants the challenge." Julius spoke rubbing his forehead as he let out a tired sigh. His body still ached from the attack, he would have already remedied that if it weren't for the fact he couldn't get fresh blood.

"I thought you killed Mathias years ago?" His mother spoke raising a curious eyebrow. He thought he had. He had left him in a bloodied mess that was bleeding out heavily from multiple injuries. He shouldn't have survived. But somehow he did. And that worried Julius even more. Was the how. Not the why.

"He was within inches of losing his life when I left him there..there should be no god damned way that he is alive. Someone..or something had to have saved him." Julius spoke as he slowly stood and walked to his personal cooler pulling out a chilled bottle of blood. He poured himself a glass before taking a quick and long swig before turning around and staring at her. "He attacked an entire house in the dead of the night and won. I want to know how in the hell that was possible."

"And we will find that out in due time Julius. But for now. You will need to find out what we are going to do with the members of the Xeres family that no longer have a place to go." She spoke looking at her son with an intuitive gaze. She asked the very question he had been asking himself. And the only answer that was popping into his head, was something not many in his family would agree with. Hell they might even leave if they don't completely agree with his choice.

"The only solution for that, that comes to mind is merging the remnants of their house with our own. A complete unification." Julius spoke out softly as he looked back to his mother. "Do you think it could work?"

"I expect it to. And I agree with it. Their clan is falling about due to the lack of leadership and from the attack. The best we can do is give them a safe haven, and somewhere to rest their tired bodies." She spoke thoughtfully as she stared at him. "And maybe that girl could be the one that helps push their decision forward."

"That girl just lost her own mother." Julius said staring at her. "Her mother was Jadamine. And I got her out of there before she witnessed her own mothers death"

The slow realization came over his mother as she slowly stood walking to his door, before turning and looking to him. "I will begin having our beat search for the remaining Xeres. It is up to you if the girl will open up to you as one of our own." His mother said before opening the door and leaving him there, alone with his chaotic thoughts.

He walked and sat back down in his chair silently holding his glass of chilled blood before taking another long sip of it appreciating the metallic taste as he closed his eyes leaning back into his chair. Before he began working with Angelica, he would use some long overdue rest.
