Chapter 2: His Whisper In The Dying Sun

It had to have been him, or maybe not. The detective's memory was faint, for he had already tried to forget those moments with him. He looked out the window of the car in which he rode with the newcomer Will. This was unusual for Will to be driving, Smith had always been keen on him driving and nobody else. But today his mind was somewhere far, far back into his memory.

"Please, please just leave me alone," a boy cried on the corner of the street where the bullies had been pushing him to the concrete on his way home. "Please, someone, anyone help me!" He cried out.

"Oh, is your mutha not here to help her lil boy," one of the bullies said sarcastically ina whiny voice.

"Yeah, is someone dad not coming to help his son... how awful," the other bully said. A third one stood in the back, but he was simply keeping guard of the matter.

"Hey, there's another student coming, should we stop for now?" The final bully said.

"No let him see, and if he says anything we'll just have another punk to 'teach'." The first bully claimed.

"Please, I just want to go home!" The boy on the ground cried out again.

"You don't have a home, because a home is where a family is and you don't got one," the first one said again.

"Hey what's going on here?" The student who happened to be walking by asked.

"None of your business," The first bully claimed.

"Listen, just leave him alone, he has no family and you bullies tease him every day because of it. I would like to see you without a family, bet you wouldn't last two seconds with your brains," the boy told.

"What you tryna say, punk?" The first bully exclaimed.

"I'm saying your too stupid to understand a single thing, idiot," the student explained.

"That's it, get him!" The first bully said as the two other bullies charged at the student.

The third bully was a pudgy student that attended the same high school as the other student. They were all first-years at the school and already they were fighting with each other. The student stood there trying not to laugh at the sight of the fat student running, but knew he would not stoop to their level. The other bully charging at him was slim, almost fragile in a sense. He looked better as a computer gamer than anything else. He simply stood them and in a flash, he had knocked the both of them to the ground. Both looked at each other disoriented. The first bully was pissed as he looked at the other two in disappointment.

"You think you're gonna get away with this bastard, just wait, you will be begging for mercy next time," the first bully proclaimed as he ran off with the other two.

"Then I guess I'll be seeing you," the student claimed as he waved goodbye to the bullies.

He reached out a hand to the kid still on the ground. He recognized him from school since they had classes together. The kid simply cried on the concrete sidewalk.

"Hey, you going to take my hand or what?" The student asked.

"Just go, I don't need you or anyone!" The kid yelled.

"Come on, I'll introduce myself. Ahem! My name is Smith, Smith Parks." The kid looked up at him almost confused. Nobody had ever wanted to help him or even bother to ask his name.

"I'm... I'm Cole, Cole Simmons."

He took Smith's hand and stood up. He wobbled for a bit but Smith held onto him. They went to a cafe and ate food together, and hung out in the park together, and would watch the sun fall. They stood by the water on the parapet. Looking towards the vivid horizon. Smith looked at the orange glow coming from Coles's eyes. Smith smiled and maybe even giggled to himself. He looked out to the horizon, and just as if it was an instinct he whispered into Coles's ear, "would you love me till we die?"

Cole said nothing, he just looked at the horizon. He was petrified to move, to say anything at all. He took a deep breath and whispered back, "I will love you if you can still love me after I leave."

For the rest of the day, they spoke little to each other. Smith wondered what he meant and what he was leaving for. He looked at Coles's smile as he walked him home and decided not to think much of it. He left Cole with a hug and headed back home. Maybe it was too quick, but the frail boy on the concrete was love at the first sight of him. Smith always desired to help and he had always had an interest in Cole. He would think about him from time to time, but when he saw him on the ground crying out to somebody his desires grew immensely for him.

When he got home he told his mother why he was late for dinner and ate alone in his room. He thought about Cole and wondered if he would be eating tonight since he didn't seem to have much money on him. Smith thought to make lunch for Cole in the morning before school would start. He did his homework, but this feeling for Cole wouldn't disappear. Something must be wrong, though Smith. He couldn't stop thinking of the worst outcome ever since Cole said he was leaving. What was he leaving for, where was he going. He didn't have enough money to travel far, suddenly all the dots were aligning. He finally captures his heart's desire and death would bring him back to nothing but ash.

Smith ran downstairs and saw his mother on the couch. "I'm leaving I have to study with a friend!" He yelled as he left the house. He ran while putting his coat on and tear began to roll. What if he is hurt? What if he is dying? What if he is crying and calling for help again? Smith's mind screamed precarious thoughts at him. He ran past the ocean and past the cafe. He ran, he simply ran.

When he arrived at Cole's house it was nothing but ash. The fire department was there asking him to leave, but he couldn't he needed to know if Cole was okay, but something told him that he wouldn't be seeing him for a while. The firemen told him they found a body but it was too burnt to claim an identity. Smith wondered about before coming home realizing what Cole had meant by 'leave'. He walked to his room, not saying anything to his mother as he did, and went to bed.

When he woke he was late for school already. He took his time which was unusual for him, but he didn't care anymore. He walked to school feeling abashed by last night's events. What he couldn't do haunted him. Finally, he had something and now once more he was alone. He walked into class late, feeling the eys follow him to his seat. He sat down slowly looking out the window. The teacher paused briefly then continued reading the text from a book that nobody cared for. Smith noticed that Cole, nor the bully was in class that day.

I wouldn't want to show my face in class either after murdering somebody, Smith thought. He thought this because he believed that the bullied purposely killed Cole. He looked down at his desk and grabbed his book out, as he leafed through the pages, trying to get to the page the class was looking at, a note fell from it. He picked it up cautiously hoping that it was from Cole. Maybe this would answer his questions, quench his blood-thirst. He slowly and fastidiously opened the note to see it was from Cole. He read it realizing that it wasn't a suicide note, nor a note from the bully pretending to be Cole. It had to be from Cole, though there was no evidence since Smith couldn't compare it to other handwriting from Cole. everything he had owned was burnt to ash in the fire. He read it and in all the despair he had hope that Cole was still out there.

Note:

Dear, Smith

Will you love me forever? Even after I disappear? Even when I have done things I can't recover from? Even when I hurt you? Tell me on the day we meet again. When God's gate opens for you. When it is all over and done with. Promise to never stop searching and maybe one day I'll return to you.

Don't forget me, and I will always love you.

Sincerely, Cole.
